Lawyer questions UNM solar efforts

A city lawman accuses UNM of being “anti-solar energy.” Jason Marks, an Albuquerque attorney who has served with the state’s Public Regulation Commission, said the University is a member of the New Mexico Industrial Energy Consumers (NMIEC), a lobbying group in Santa Fe.

Bursar’s website may be redone

The Graduate and Professional Student Association continues to push for restructuring the UNM Bursar’s website. At a Board of Regents’ Finance and Facilities Committee meeting Friday, GPSA members discussed problems with the website and suggestions on how to make it more comprehensive for students.

NMSU game to have food drive

Students will be able to tackle hunger in Albuquerque this weekend at the football tailgate. Student United Way will host “Stack the Tailgate,” a canned food drive event from 2 to 5 p.m. before UNM’s football match against New Mexico State University on Saturday night.

Congress ground to a halt Tuesday morning, but a UNM official said campus life should carry on as usual. UNM Interim Vice President of Human Resources Jewel Washington said the effect of the shutdown on the University is dependent upon how long it lasts.

GPSA: Grant forms in Spanish

UNM’s Graduate and Professional Student Association is working to make applying for the grants it offers easier for Spanish-speaking students. GPSA has been working on a project to translate grant-related documents into Spanish and may eventually enable graduate students to apply for grants in the language.

On Sept. 20, a UNMPD officer was dispatched to Coronado Hall regarding students smoking marijuana. According to the report, a resident adviser told the officer upon arrival that during a hallway check, she smelled the odor of marijuana outside a certain room.

Always a Lobo: Former hoopster Michael Cooper honored

UNM alumnus and former Lobo basketball player Michael Cooper received the Living Legend award from the University’s Black Alumni Chapter Friday night at the Centennial Engineering Auditorium. After playing for UNM from 1976 to 1978, Cooper was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers where he started his path to become a legend.

Proposed abortion law dominates debate

Abortion was the hot topic of the second of three televised Albuquerque mayoral candidate debates of the season. In a debate hosted by KOB Sunday morning, candidates discussed whether they support the late-term abortion ban that is going to be on the ballot in November’s runoff elections.

GPSA: Bursar website unclear

When Priscila Poliana assumed the presidency of UNM’s graduate and professional student government in May, she already knew she wanted to do something about the website of the bursar’s office. At a GPSA meeting Saturday morning, Poliana outlined issues with the site and reported on the progress she had made with the University administration to fix them.
