Jail escapee blames police chase for his wife's death SANTA FE (AP) - A Santa Fe man whose wife helped him escape from jail and then was killed in a high-speed car wreck as the couple tried to elude police blames the pursuing officers for her death. Local law enforcement representatives said officers followed proper procedures in trying to stop the fleeing inmate.

Professors work to develop vaccines

Researchers at UNM are devising a new method for making vaccines that fight Alzheimer's, arthritis, allergies, cancer and other chronic diseases. Bryce Chackerian, an assistant professor of molecular genetics and microbiology, said he and another UNM professor are researching a way to make the vaccines quick and inexpensive.

Regents make changes to UNM counsel policy

The University won't back down in lawsuits as a new policy requires UNM to avoid financial settlements. "Any exception to this policy requires a comprehensive risk assessment of the case and written approval by the president of the University before entering into such an agreement," the policy states.

UNM seeks to fill vice president jobs

UNM is looking for candidates to fill two vice president positions for offices started this year. Search committees are advertising nationally for vice presidents of the offices of Enrollment Management and Inclusion and Equity.

Suspects at large in book-theft ring

UNM Police issued warrants Monday for five people suspected of stealing library books from universities and colleges and selling them to bookstores at other campuses. The five people are part of a theft ring of as many as 12 people, said Lt. Pat Davis, UNM Police spokesman.


Recycling bins were removed from hallways in Northrop Hall about a month ago because the fire marshal said they violated fire code.

Department: Orders to move bins hinder recycling efforts

A state fire marshal order is hindering recycling efforts for the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, the department's chairman said. "We've been forced to remove almost all of our recycling bins from Northrop Hall," John Geissman said. "Recycling efforts are becoming diminished because of this."

Guild Cinema will not be punished for porn festival (Video)

The Guild Cinema will not be punished by the city for hosting a pornography festival over the weekend. Albuquerque's Zoning Enforcement Office issued a notice of violation Monday to the theater after its three-day Pornotopia festival, said Bob White, city attorney.

UNM to research rare form of breast cancer

Staff Report UNM will work with the University of Texas to fight a rare, aggressive form of breast cancer. The University signed an agreement Monday with the University of Texas-Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to collaborate on research projects for inflammatory breast cancer.

GPSA struggled to get through its agenda at Saturday's meeting when a petition was presented to recall Joseph Garcia, the organization's president. There was heated discussion and a lot of back-and-forth between members who support Garcia and those who say he has not done his job.

The Winter Roots Festival is a celebration of culture and community right before the holiday season, said Cedrick Parker, an academic adviser for African American Student Services. UNM students, faculty and staff joined with members of the community at the festival as a way to celebrate the season.

Guild Cinema could be cited for 'Pornotopia'

A meeting today will decide whether the Guild Cinema's owners will face repercussions for holding a pornography film festival over the weekend. Peter Conheim and Keif Henley received a letter Friday saying the Pornotopia festival violates Albuquerque's zoning laws.

ICES: Putting teachers to the test

Over the next couple weeks, students will fill in bubbles on Scantron sheets for all their classes, but they're not just tests. ICES evaluations play a key role in whether professors get promotions and receive tenure, Deputy Provost Richard Holder said.
