Rosalyn Nguyen, the new student regent, was confirmed by the state Senate on Monday. But many students interviewed by the Daily Lobo on Monday didn't even know what the student regent position was. "I didn't even know the position existed," said Steven Johnston.
Jan. 26 An officer was sent to the Coronado Hall dormitory after UNMPD received a report a student was "showing off" a homemade capacitor to friends, according to a police report. The officer took two modified cameras from the student, who was advised not to do any more projects, the report states.
An open forum sponsored by the Intelligence Studies Club turned into a two-hour debate Monday. Jeff Bingaman objected to President Bush's proposals to revamp Social Security, saying Monday they could end up reducing benefits for future retirees. Bingaman, in a speech to a joint session of the Legislature, also warned that New Mexico could be hurt by federal proposals involving health care programs such as Medicaid.

Not many students can call their instructor governor. But the 115 students taking Gov. Bill Richardson's class on New Mexico do. On their first meeting, Richardson asked his students to address him the same way they address other instructors. Student Heather Pollock said she doesn't think of him as an ordinary instructor.

A study conducted at UNM claims men and women think differently. But that doesn't mean one gender is more intelligent than the other, the report states. The paper appeared in an issue of the journal NeuroImage and was published by Rex Jung, an assistant research professor at UNM.
Five rapes were reported to UNM police in 2003, but according to statistics from the Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center, 140 college-aged women in Albuquerque reported being raped in 2004. The statistics, released in early January, reported that women aged 18 to 24 had the highest incidence of rape.

Civil engineering professor Ellen Rathje and two other experts in the field of geotechnical engineering presented their findings about satellite imagery and tsunami damage on Tuesday at the first national Geo-Frontiers Conference at the Austin Hilton Convention Center Hotel in Austin, Texas.
