Credit card reps call police on UNM student

Two representatives from Citibank who were handing out fliers offering a free sub from Blimpie's called UNMPD on a student Wednesday. The marketers, who refused to identify themselves, said Teddy Yates was harassing them, because he followed them around campus warning students their coupons were a scam.

Capitol day for ASUNM reps

ASUNM President Kevin Stevenson's first day of the semester started off like any other first day of class. He woke up around 6:30 a.m. and was on campus before 8:00 a.m. But he didn't head off to his 8:00 a.m. math class. Instead, he hit the road for the opening of the New Mexico Legislature.

Rapid Ride bus battles red lights

by Daniel Trujillo Daily Lobo Students needing to get to school faster this semester can now use the city's Rapid Ride system. The new route, which began running Dec. 21, runs 11 miles along Central Avenue from Unser Boulevard to Wyoming Boulevard, north on Wyoming and then to the Uptown area.

University sees fewer foreign applicants

With fewer foreign applicants each year, UNM's enrollment figures for international students are beginning to mirror the national trend. The steady drop in the number of international students applying to study at American universities and the accompanying decline in their enrollment is cause for concern, said Ken Carpenter, associate director of the Office of International Programs and Studies.

Students face long lines for money

The lines for financial aid disbursement were almost nonexistent at 11 a.m. But around 4 p.m. they began to grow. And grow they did. By 4:30 p.m., the line wrapped around the walls in the Student Services Building, went out the door, snaked around the corner, through the archway and to the entrance to the Mesa Vista Hall courtyard.

Native American studies offered at UNM Dec. 14 - The UNM Board of Regents approved the curriculum for a bachelor's degree in Native American studies. Classes toward the degree will be offered this semester. UNM has offered a minor in Native American Studies since 1999 but is now one of 35 institutions to offer the degree.

Regent appointee not approved by student groups

The new student regent was not nominated by GPSA or ASUNM, but she was one of three names UNM President Louis Caldera sent to the governor. Rosalyn Nguyen was appointed in December by Gov. Bill Richardson to replace Andrea Cook, whose term is up. Robert Bienstock, university counsel, said the governor picks a student regent from a list provided by the president.

UNM switches loan providers

by Paula Bowker Daily Lobo Direct Loans is no longer the provider for the University's student loans. UNM began processing student loans through New Mexico Student Loans, a nonprofit organization, on Jan. 1. "For the students, the change will appear seamless," Kathleen O'Keefe, interim financial aid director said in a news release.

Students hurt by tsunami offered aid

Detox center to ease pressure on UNMH

Physician Sam Slishman was not particularly interested in helping the homeless. Then he began working at UNMH. "In college, I studied math and physics and had no connection to the homeless," he said. "In the ER, I saw that it was a high priority." Slishman created the Endorphin Power Co.

Prof sparks children's interest in science

Stanley Micklavzina sometimes ends his demonstrations by propelling himself across the stage with a fire extinguisher-powered go-cart. This time, he caused a 55-gallon drum to collapse. Dr. Stan's Science Circus came to town Saturday at Regener Hall with science demonstrations aimed at entertaining parents, teachers, children and UNM students.

Officials declare support for Flanagan

The controversy around Head Coach Don Flanagan and the UNM women's basketball program is dying down. Fatima Maddox was not allowed to start a game against New Mexico State on Dec. 21. She went to the NAACP to ask for assistance in getting released from UNM so she could transfer to another team.

Debate tourney recruits for UNM

Ten members of the Speech and Debate Society brought hundreds of high school students to UNM Friday and Saturday. Mario Herrera, one of the organizers of the 4th annual Speech and Debate tournament, said it's the biggest event the group puts on and the largest high school tourney in the state.

by John Bear Daily Lobo Finals have arrived, and lack of sleep could be catching up to students. UNM student Stephanie Kramer said lately she probably gets no more than two or three hours of sleep a night. She said she has to play catch-up with all of her classes.
