SOLAS names new leadership

In a victory over opponent Joseph Garcia, Sandra Ortsman was elected SOLAS president. Ortsman, a second-year master's student in the Latin American studies and the community and regional planning program, begins her term this fall. A third of LAS students cast their vote last week in the election.

Wireless networks installed on parts of campus

UNM computer users are becoming unplugged. Students using laptops at Zimmerman Library, the CIRT building and the SUB can immediately be connected to the Internet through a wireless technology system. The increasing popularity of wireless technology has created a demand for the networks at UNM, said Aaron Baca, technical support analyst at Computer and Information Resources and Technology.

Programs honor graduates

With University commencement ceremonies rapidly approaching, many UNM students are looking forward to additional programs planned to commemorate the end of their college days. El Centro de la Raza is planning its own graduation for students, said Rosa Cervantes, student programs specialist for the program.

Outstanding instructors rewarded

Michele Ferm had nightmares for an entire week before she started teaching her first section of German 101. That was the fall semester of 2002, back when she tried to figure out if she could slip out of class on the first day before anyone noticed she was the instructor.

Kirtland becomes protest campsite

Four days into their protest in front of Kirtland Air Force Base, anti-war protesters say they have met their goal of triggering debate on the base. Protesters assembled the anti-war encampment on the corner of Gibson Boulevard and Truman Road on May 1, the first anniversary of President Bush's announcement that the war in Iraq had ended.

Ads cause groups temperature to rise

Students are hot under the collar over what they see as a cold misrepresentation of Latinas. Tecate advertisements placed on billboards throughout Albuquerque feature a slanted Tecate bottle with the words, "Finally, a cold Latina," written across them. The advertisements will be coming down within the next 48 hours, according to a customer service representative from Labatt, U.

Cinco de Mayo stands as symbol of courage

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is not Mexico's Independence Day - that falls on Sept. 16. Rather, the holiday commemorates the Mexican victory over Napoleon and the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The French army invaded Mexico to claim territory for France and to collect debts from previous wars.
