Donations rise at three state universities ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Private donations to New Mexico's three research universities have climbed despite tough times for charities nationwide. The University of New Mexico raised $35.4 million in 2002, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, which publishes the annual "Philanthropy 400" national ranking of charitable groups.
Staff Report Children in need of heart surgery can no longer go to UNMH because the hospital has begun referring them to other states where they can receive better care, officials say. UNM Hospital, which saw about 50 pediatric patients a year in need of heart surgery, doesn't have the resources or the training to treat the children at the same level as larger hospitals, said Robert Katz, chairman of UNM's Department of Pediatrics.

Cell phone users got a break Monday, thanks to national rules that went into effect allowing them to switch service providers without changing their number. Chartered just this year, the water polo team came to be after a few friends put their heads together to come up with a way to "provide students with an opportunity to play water polo at a collegiate level," according to Student Activities Web site.
A diverse group of students came together at the SUB Friday to work towards a common goal: improving the world. Attendees of the Sustainability Festival received tips on how to preserve the environment, personal health, culture and society and community education were among the topics discussed during the day-long event.

Local Members of reservist unit return to N.M. ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Eleven members of the 809th Army Reserve Unit will have Thanksgiving at home. The group was reunited with their families, who held balloons and signs of support at the airport here, as reservists returned home Friday following a nine-month tour in Iraq.
