Professor receives Hoover award

Staff Report A UNM history professor has been named as the recipient of an annual award honoring U.S. President Herbert Hoover and the time he spent in public office. David Farber, who has been a professor of history at UNM since 1997, will receive the 2002 Herbert Hoover Book Award, which honors the best scholarly book published during the calendar year on any aspect of American history during 1914-64, the years of Hoover's political career.

Robbers steal jerseys from store in The Pit

The owner of a Lobo sports merchandise store in The Pit is calling a robbery that netted nearly $2,800 worth of clothes a "shoplifting." The robbery took place just over two weeks ago at the Lobo Store inside The Pit, 1111 University Blvd. SE. Greg Edgeington, owner of the store and president of Graphic Industries, the parent company of the Lobo Store which owns college merchandise stores on university campuses across the country, said the employee who was working during the robbery did get a little scared, but was not injured "Since it happened, they decided to add two extra cameras," Edgeington said.

Men more likely to die from same behaviors

U.S. men die on average almost five years before women and that gap is widening, according to a recent article in a medical journal which said that the disparity is becoming a silent health crisis. Louis Sullivan, former national secretary of Health and Human Services, said in the article that the fact that men are continuing to ignore their health is becoming an epidemic within the United States.

Children's center opens

Tabet Daily Lobo Amid children dancing to a mariachi rendition of "It's a small world," a handful of excited parents and several state and University dignitaries attended the grand opening ceremonies of the UNM Children's Campus on Wednesday. The children's campus, located on a recently constructed north campus site, will replace both the Child Care Center and the Manzanita Center at UNM.

ESL program faces challenges

Low enrollment and limited resources have jeopardized the future of the English as a Second Language Writing program at UNM - a program one lecturer in the English Department says is worth continuing because it is valuable to students. Marisa Clark, who will receive the UNM Outstanding Adjunct Teacher or Lecturer of the Year award in May, is the program director for English as a Second Language, also known as ESL.

Abercrombie & Fitch puts student on catolog cover

A UNM student who landed on the cover of this summer's Abercrombie & Fitch catalog attributes his young modeling career to simply being in the right place at the right time. Michael Smith, a 21-year-old UNM junior, said he met his modeling agent while at the 7-11 convenient store in his neighborhood about a year ago.

In an announced closed meeting Friday, the UNM Presidential Search Committee reviewed the "small number" of presidential evaluations completed by the University community after each of the five finalists' campus forums conducted throughout April. Peace activists shave heads

About 50 peace activists and poets showed up to watch 13 more shave their heads to show opposition for the U.S.-led war in Iraq and to honor of the victims of the conflict on Sunday. "Peace Buzz," was designed as an avenue for local artists and activists in a profound personal statement of mourning for the victims of the war in Iraq to send a collective cry for peace, said Sue Chavez, a member of the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, co-sponsor of the event.

New radio telescope may be built in N.M

UNM, in collaboration with other educational institutions in the Southwest, is organizing lobbying efforts to have New Mexico selected as the site for a new imaging radio astronomy telescope. The Low Frequency Array Telescope, also known as LOFAR, will be a major new multi-element imaging telescope designed to operate within low frequency ranges.

Faculty Senate vote statement to regents

In an official vote by the Faculty Senate, two-thirds of respondents favor presidential candidate Carlos Santiago and more than 80 percent think the next UNM president should have experience as an educator and academic scholar.
