UNM and New Mexico State University have received a grant from the U.S. Department of the Army that will fund the Universities to the tune of $2-8 million per year for research and development. The grant, part of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Education Institution Strategic Partnership, is meant to provide funding for universities, which in turn provide research to the agency.
UNM presidential candidate Carlos Santiago said he wants the position because he is interested in the diverse population of New Mexico and because his administrative experience closely parallels the responsibilities of the job. ASUNM senatorial candidate David Newland said he is looking for more participation among UNM students and that he hopes to see a love for the school that exists in other places. Ellen Cosgrove, senior associate dean for the Continuing Medical Education office, said she is very pleased with the reaccreditation.
In 1993, UNM administrators converted the Zuni half of Hokona Hall from student dorms to office space for the College of Education - but Housing and Food Services was never compensated for the equivalent of the building's equity. Housing did receive some compensation in the form of reductions in operating costs and debt service, said Randy Boeglin, UNM dean of students and director of residence life.
