New parking garage delayed

Construction of two components of the new Cornell Parking Garage have been delayed because of a difference in the project's original budget estimate and a new estimate conducted after the project was put out to bid. Roger Lujan, UNM facility planning director, told the Commission on Higher Education Thursday that the two components, a new visitor center and a concession stand canopy, will be finished once new funding becomes available after the garage is complete some time near September of 2003.

Few students attend Fee Review Board's funding discussion

The Student Fee Review Board's town hall meeting, billed as an open forum for students to voice concerns about departmental fund allocation, turned out to be a missed opportunity for UNM students. Two students attended the Monday night meeting in Dane Smith Hall, which broke down the fee, included in tuition, paid by each UNM student.

UNM displays holiday generosity

Likewise, most people donate goods and money in the next six weeks - UNM students are no different. "People are generous this time of year because they are getting so much and want to give to those that may not be as fortunate," said Anna Tu, president of the Collegiate Kiwanis, an on-campus organization that helps students get involved with community service.

Campus favorite closes vending stand

A popular food vendor that sold burritos, tortilla burgers and other light fare near the Duck Pond closed up shop last month and said he will not be returning to sell food on campus. Lee Vigil, owner and operator of Daniel's Den Quick Stop CafÇ, said that because of a new "overzealous" health inspector who began to enforce health code standard to the letter, and ten years of working on campus, he decided it was time to move on with life.

Vibrational healing taught at Women's Center event

The Women's Resource Center sponsored a lunch workshop focusing on a non-traditional method of healing. The Thursday workshop, focusing on vibrational healing of the body, mind and spirit, was part of the Brown Bag Series sponsored by the center. "We like to offer some alternatives and some glimpses of what traditional and healing methods are like," said Summer Little, program services coordinator for the center.

Senators urged to lobby against high tuition hike

He said that the Associated Students of UNM Lobbying Committee's number one priority was keeping student tuition increases as low as possible.

Progression slate sweeps ASUNM Senate spots

Amy Cook, Matthew Burgess, Melanie Giron-Carpenter, Megan Cisneros, Celestina Torres, Justin Crosby, Charlene Sevilla, Cicely Gragg, Kevin Stevenson and Christopher Chavez were chosen as senators for the Associated Students of UNM.

Career Services helps students find options in a cyber-setting

The cafÇ, in room 220 of the Career Services Building, features free Internet access for students, and is meant to help them learn to use the Web for career exploration purposes, said Leslye Ellison, director of Career Services.

The event, "Broken Bottles and Broken Bodies; A Forum on Alcohol, Violence and Advertisements on Campus," addressed a series of ads run in the Lobo that several campus groups have objected to due to their implied connection between sex and alcohol.

Campus fight ends with fracture

UNM police arrested a man who reportedly assaulted a University student by pushing him over a wall outside Laguna DeVargas Residence Hall - which resulted in a fractured femur, a bone in the thigh. Police were called to the residence hall Saturday at about 12:45 a.

Birth control options explored

The advancing technology of emergency contraception is improving women's options, although several groups on campus agree that it is still misunderstood by many people. In a forum Tuesday, titled "Back Up Your Birth Control with EC," the three methods of emergency contraception currently available within the United States were discussed focal points.

Criteria for presidential applicants finalized

The Presidential Search Committee hammered out the final details Tuesday for the criteria for applicants for the UNM president position, including adding a new introduction to market the University's potential. Using the statements from Rutgers University and the University of Michigan's criteria, search committee members were concerned that the UNM statement of qualifications did not include any information on how to market the University's uniqueness.

Two sexual assaults reported last month

The first alleged incident occurred Oct. 28, when a UNM student, Justin Bacon, reportedly forced his way into a female resident's room in Coronado Hall and held her down while he made skin-to-skin contact with her breasts and buttocks without her permission.

UNM President Chris Garcia announced last week that the University has selected its next Office of Equal Opportunity director - a candidate he said was far and above the best of four finalists. Lecture on brewing to be fun, light

Anyone who has ever wondered about the process used to create wines or beers can learn all about the role chemistry plays in fermenting and brewing in a special lecture Thursday evening. The lecture, "Wine, Beer, Scotch and Chemistry," given by Northwestern University chemistry professor Mark Ratner, is promised to be a "light-hearted talk" meant to entertain and inform about the history and chemistry of alcohol, event sponsors said.
