Students were subjected to some HIV/AIDS shock therapy Tuesday during World AIDS Day to help them realize just how prevalent the disease has become in society. The event, which was recognized internationally on Sunday, was held between the Duck Pond and Zimmerman Library and, according to event organizers, was to show the UNM community how close to home the epidemic is.

Staff Report Popular UNM history professor Richard Berthold announced his plans to retire in a statement Monday. Berthold stated "constant harassment by persons in authority at the University" as the reason for his retirement. Berthold said in a statement that he would like to continue teaching but that his retirement will take effect at the end of this semester.
UNM Faculty Senate members voiced their concerns about the top secret security clearance qualification for all presidential candidates at a Board of Regents meeting Monday. Faculty Senate President Beverly Burris and Faculty Sen. John Geissman laid out their trepidations about including the top secret security clearance in the statement of qualifications for the presidential position.
The Board of Regents' Finance and Facilities Committee voted to approve the sale of 3.2 acres on UNM's south campus to TVI at its Monday meeting. The land, which is south of Coal Avenue between University Boulevard and Buena Vista Drive, will be sold to the Technical Vocational Institute for its appraised value of $545,000.

Staff Report A first-ever study examining the psychological processes of adolescents confronted with sex and birth control issues will be the focus of a UNM College of Nursing study. Results from the study will be used to help reduce the number of unintended teenage pregnancies.
UNM German Studies Professor Peter Pabisch has been named the Distinguished Max Kade Research Professor, an honor that included funding to a panelist at an international conference on the cultural aspects of the German language. The conference, "Future Chances of the German Language in Eastern Europe," took place at the University of Graz in Austria in November.
In celebration of Ralph Waldo Emerson's 200th birthday, UNM Philosophy Department Chairman Russell Goodman will organize a summer institute for college professors to discuss the popular author. Goodman, who has taught courses about Emerson and other American transcendentalists such as Henry David Thoreau, proposed the grant to the National Endowment for the Humanities a year ago and was surprised when it was accepted.
Staff Report The New Mexico Alpha chapter of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at UNM has been awarded two of the international fraternity's most prestigious awards this year. The Gold Star Award, presented to individual chapters for superior excellence in chapter operations and the Founders Trophy, presented to the best chapter of Phi Delta Theta on medium-sized campuses, are two of the highest accolades presented each year by the fraternity's general headquarters.
Staff Report UNM's Special Assistant for Diversity Robert Ibarra is creating an innovative "Blue Ribbon Committee," in which select faculty members will collaborate in addressing diversity issues in academic affairs on campus. The committee, whose members were picked to provide an accurate scope of the varying perspectives within the UNM community, "will work on a variety of diversity issues that include guiding special data reporting projects, enhancing traditional recruitment, promotion and retention activities, monitoring diversity tactics in the strategic plan, and advising funded research projects on diversity and promoting unique initiatives associated with a new multicultural model for diversity that is now emerging on campus," Ibarra said in a UNM press release.

Some quick thinking and bold action by UNM police and officers from other law enforcement agencies disarmed a man near campus who was threatening to kill himself with a loaded .357 Magnum handgun Thursday night. There were no injuries in the incident after Todd Reed, 37, reportedly arrived at UNM Hospital with the handgun and repeatedly threatened to kill himself.
UNM is once again using campus tours to recruit minority high school students from around the state. Next week, UNM will bring American Indian high school students from around the state to campus to pitch UNM as their destination for higher education. UNM's American Indian Student Day, Dec.

With the passing of Bond Issue B in the Nov. 5 election, UNM can expect about $6 million to upgrade and remodel some of the campus' most popular buildings. Harvey Chace, associate director of Physical Plant for Maintenance and Construction, said some of the money will be used to address basic utility and infrastructure needs.
UNM will be honored in an acknowledgement ceremony today by a former student for the kindness he was shown and the education he received. Yutaka Miyagi, an Okinawan student, attended UNM from 1950-51 and studied economics while enrolled in the business college.
