"The ceremony gives us a chance to recognize students excelling in psychology here at UNM," said Crystal Aragon, who was recently elected president of the UNM chapter of Psi Chi.
Discussing ways to raise awareness of their impact on the world around them Sunday, lecture panelists targeted the media and the role its outlets should play in promoting awareness of key environmental issues in the Southwest, including urban sprawl. The lecture, "Moving the Message: How to Tell the Story of the West," addressed the importance of effectively communicating the values of place in the West - the dramatic landscapes, the natural resources, the human communities - so that society will begin to make wiser choices about land use.
The presentation of a national award for extraordinary contributions to the field of writing has helped solidify a UNM professor's place in literary history. Rudolfo Anaya, a professor emeritus in UNM's English Department, was honored during a Zimmerman Library ceremony Friday for receiving the National Medal of Arts.

"It is one of the better attended student-run linguistics conferences because it's casual, non-threatening and non-competitive," said Candace Maher, a sociolinguistics masters degree student.

UNM's Extended University program was started in January 2000 to coordinate the institution's distance education programs.
An organic certification standards program is earning national praise for reducing the confusion about the legitimacy of organic foods. The program, started by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, introduced a new set of standards for the labeling and handling of organic foods.

Two items presented by the Finance and Facilities Committee were approved by the Board of Regents committee Wednesday during a special meeting. The board voted unanimously to adopt the Sales Resolution and Related Documents for Series 2002 A, B and C bonds and the Revised Capital Project Approval for the Cornell Parking structure.
The UNM Communication and Journalism department has withdrawn it application for reaccredidation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Members of the accreditation team were at UNM Monday and Tuesday to evaluate the department.
A division of UNM's School of law earned national recognition for it innovative Web-based judicial educational programming when it was presented a national award at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. The Judicial Education Center of New Mexico, a division of the UNM School of Law's Institute of Public Law, established its Web site in 1997 in an effort to give New Mexico judges and court staff a learning tool and continuing education that aids them in making courtroom decisions.
Members of ASUNM and other concerned groups received a guided tour of the new Student Union Building to get a glimpse of their future offices Wednesday night. The tour, led by Walt Miller, associate vice president for student development, was to provide a look at the plans for different areas of the site, setbacks they have faced and aspirations for the future of the building.

Von Puttkamer has traveled around the world, making documentaries and short movie series for The Learning Channel, including "Spiders" and "Sasquatch Odyssey," the film that has been called the definitive Bigfoot video.

The forum, sponsored by the Associated Students of UNM and the Graduate and Professional Student Association, included Vice President of Business and Finance Julie Weaks and SUB Project Manager Don Knox.
The director of UNM Press, the University's publisher of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and other literature, has been awarded a 2002 Medal of Honor for lifetime achievement by the Cherokee Honor Society. Luther Wilson, who is currently in his second stint as director of the press, said the organization has been able to take advantage of the strong multicultural presence at UNM by publishing works by several American Indian and Hispanic authors.
Regent David Archuleta stressed the importance of confidentiality concerning candidates to the Presidential Search Committee during its first official meeting Tuesday. Archuleta, the Presidential Search Committee's chairman, said that it is critical to keep names confidential because several of the candidates already have positions and don't want them jeopardized by public exposure.

Charles Hardy, a former Catholic priest and missionary who has lived in Venezuela for 17 years, presented his lecture, "Crisis in Venezuela; Populist Hugo Chavez Faces off Against the Nation's Elite" and gave his viewpoints of the current political situation and an attempted April 12 coup.
