Birth control options explored

The advancing technology of emergency contraception is improving women's options, although several groups on campus agree that it is still misunderstood by many people. In a forum Tuesday, titled "Back Up Your Birth Control with EC," the three methods of emergency contraception currently available within the United States were discussed focal points.

Criteria for presidential applicants finalized

The Presidential Search Committee hammered out the final details Tuesday for the criteria for applicants for the UNM president position, including adding a new introduction to market the University's potential. Using the statements from Rutgers University and the University of Michigan's criteria, search committee members were concerned that the UNM statement of qualifications did not include any information on how to market the University's uniqueness.

Two sexual assaults reported last month

by Clay Holtzman Daily Lobo UNM detectives are investigating two attacks on female students on campus late last month. The first alleged incident occurred Oct. 28, when a UNM student, Justin Bacon, reportedly forced his way into a female resident's room in Coronado Hall and held her down while he made skin-to-skin contact with her breasts and buttocks without her permission.

UNM President Chris Garcia announced last week that the University has selected its next Office of Equal Opportunity director - a candidate he said was far and above the best of four finalists. Doralia Martinez Freudiger, who is currently the deputy director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Staff for the U.

Lecture on brewing to be fun, light

Anyone who has ever wondered about the process used to create wines or beers can learn all about the role chemistry plays in fermenting and brewing in a special lecture Thursday evening. The lecture, "Wine, Beer, Scotch and Chemistry," given by Northwestern University chemistry professor Mark Ratner, is promised to be a "light-hearted talk" meant to entertain and inform about the history and chemistry of alcohol, event sponsors said.

ASUNM Senate election offers up 10 vacancies

UNM undergraduate students will be voting once again Wednesday for 10 soon-to-be-vacant ASUNM Senate positions. Sixteen candidates will vie for the 10 open Associated Students of UNM senator positions. This semester, The Progression is the election's only slate, consisting of 10 members, as well as six candidates running as independents.

UNM archeologist part of Roswell project

Staff Report A group of investigators, funded by a television network and led by a UNM archeologist, excavated the alleged UFO crash site in Roswell in September for a documentary that will be aired Nov. 22. William Doleman, senior archeologist at the UNM Office of Contract Archeology, said his work on the Roswell excavation is top secret and that he signed a contract with the SCI FI channel preventing him from disclosing its results.

Report details journalism program faults

The official report from the national council that accredits journalism and communication schools found the UNM Communication and Journalism Department non-compliant in six of the 12 criteria it uses to evaluate programs. The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications also found two criteria "compliant," with reservations.

Students donate marrow to save lives

The National Marrow Donor Program conducted a marrow donation registration drive to test volunteers' blood to determine if they qualify to be bone marrow or stem cell donors.

Engineering Department mourns student's death

Program's accreditation makes committee agenda

The recent loss of the journalism department's accreditation became a major topic of discussion at the Board of Regents' Academic/Student Affairs Committee meeting Tuesday. The committee also listened to presentations about the pros and cons of retirement-age employees and efforts being made to prevent students from dropping out.

Former presidents welcomed back

UNM Child Care expands

by Mira Poling Daily Lobo The population of UNM changes each semester and students can expect some knee-high additions this particular winter - 70 new children will enter UNM's Child Care Center. The space for additional children is available due to the center's recent merge with Manzanita and the use of a new larger facility.
