Statewide project awards local bar

Compelled to reward an action it viewed as "honorable," a UNM-affiliated group has given an award, complete with honorary ceremony, to Brewster's Pub and one of its employees for refusing a pregnant woman entry to the bar Oct. 5. The Statewide Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Prevention Project, a division of UNM's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions, or more commonly known as CASAA, awarded Brewster's the special plaque for its actions to "set a precedent for a bar taking the next step in reducing the chances of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome," according to project organizers.

KUNM story on local ranch gathers attention

Staff Report A public radio story on an innovative local ranch has KUNM 89.9 FM in contention for the nationally-acclaimed Daniel Schorr Journalism prize. The story, "Montoya Ranch," produced by independent producer Joe Gardner Wessely, was conceived by the Quivira Coalition, a nonprofit organization created to bring ranchers, environmentalists, public land managers and the public together to look at ways to manage and provide good stewardship of ranch lands.

N.M. funds go towards food stamps for families

Staff Report With winter rapidly approaching, the Human Services Department has awarded the New Mexico Association of Food Banks $300,000 in supplemental funds to help feed New Mexico's needy. The allotted sum will be used to help feed homeless and low-income families on a statewide emergency basis and provide assistance to functional programs.

Magnetic railways hover in N.M. future

Aviva Brecher, a national transportation expert, said high speed, magnetic propelled "hovering" trains will be the future mode of transportation Thursday. Brecher presented her lecture, "Bringing Magnetic Levitation Trains to USA: Technology and Policy Changes," at the UNM Continuing Education Center.

ELECTION 2002: Bond B to help upgrade existing UNM facilities

Dolores Gonzalez, senior program manager for the UNM office of advancement, said that approving the bonds would not only help students on the main campus but would also aid those at University branch campuses.

A Night Taken Back

This and other statistics prompted the UNM Women's Law Caucus, a group of female law students, to organize Take Back the Night, an event observing women's struggle against violence Wednesday.

Students urged to take early voting option

Bernalillo County Clerk Mary Herrera said the best way to make sure the students' voice is heard in the Nov. 5 election is to get out and use the early voting option. Herrera said she has been encouraging all voters to take advantage of early voting to help prevent long lines from forming on election day, which may be longer than usual because of the large number of items on the ballot.

Popular pub to get new look, life

Many at UNM may not have noticed the quiet closure of Sprockets Pub, a bar across Central Avenue from UNM last summer. However, many have surely noticed the current gutting of the former popular student bar at 2216 Central Ave. SE. The location, which was the Fat Chance Bar & Grill before being rechristened Sprockets, is now being converted into a new bar and restaurant that has not yet been named.

Resolution passed to regulate credit card vendors

The UNM Faculty Senate voted Tuesday to approve a resolution that would regulate credit card vendors by creating a credit education program, as well as charging the companies a fee to market on campus. Pam Olson, an associate professor of individual family community education, addressed the senate about the resolution.

Two life-long friends from Spain stopped in Albuquerque Tuesday for a brief pause during a trip that will take them around the world in 80 days without using any type of air travel. Tuesday was the 65th day of travel for Manel Vinyals, 40, and Jaquim Marcoval, 41, who started their journey Aug.

Foster asks to talk about education act

During the Faculty Senate meeting Tuesday, Brian Foster, provost for Academic Affairs, suggested that faculty begin a serious discussion about the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. The act, which was last reauthorized in 1998 under the Clinton administration, was created to federally regulate higher education and provide governance and funding of public higher education institutions.

Police believe series of auto burglaries related

UNM police are investigating a series of auto burglaries that were reported Friday and Saturday at a number of locations around campus. According to the UNM Police Department dispatch log, officers responded to and filed reports concerning 14 auto burglaries that were reported in a two-day period.

Cause still a mystery in UNM student dorm death

Officials at the state Office of the Medical Investigator have not yet determined the cause of death for a 47-year-old student who was found in his Student Resident Center dorm room Oct. 4. Tim Stepetic, associate director of the Office of the Medical Investigator, said toxicology tests are in the process of being performed and that they should shed light on why the senior biology major died.

Presidential search advertisement approved

The UNM Presidential Search Subcommittee met Monday for a short meeting where committee members approved the position announcement and the search firm contract. Committee members edited the presidential position advertisement, which will appear in the Chronicle on Higher Education, Black Issues in Higher Education and the Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education, said UNM Public Relations Director Frank Martinez.

YWCA to organize 8th annual

The YWCA's local Middle Rio Grande chapter will help organize several events around Albuquerque to commemorate a Week Without Violence, including the 2002 Take Back the Night rally Wednesday at UNM. The events are part of the Young Women's Christian Association Week Without Violence campaign that emphasizes alternatives to family violence, violence linked to racism, sexism and bigotry and violence in the media.

Hopeful royalty raise funds for foundation

Students running for UNM's 2002 Homecoming Court took time out of their busy schedules last week to partner with the New Mexico Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to raise money for national Cystic Fibrosis Week. The students in contention for the title of Homecoming king and queen sold "roses" for $10 as part of the extensive community service that accompanies the title of Homecoming representative for UNM.
