SANTA FE — More than 400 people gathered at the Eldorado Hotel Friday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the UNM School of Medicine and honor former state Sen. Fabian Chavez, who was instrumental in establishing the school.
UNM fraternity and sorority members will sing, dance, attend seminars and compete in sporting events during Greek Week to raise money for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. For the next five days, the groups will compete against each other while raising money to help the foundation, which serves the needs of children who are HIV-positive.

Diversity speaker Steve Birdine told a large group of UNM students Tuesday night that the answers to racial problems are as simple as being nice to each other. “The biggest problem we have in higher education is that we have a lot of experts who can’t communicate and have politicized diversity to the point that people aren’t honest with each other anymore,” he said. “If people just followed the golden rule — do unto others as you want them to do unto you — we would have no trouble getting along.” Birdine is the coordinator of Diversity Programs at Indiana University and president of Creative Diversity Communications. With racial tensions flaring up at UNM following an incident with a swastika being taped to a black student’s car while she was illegally parked outside of a fraternity, a variety of campus leaders sponsored Birdine’s visit.

ASUNM Sen. Steve Aguilar said UNM is one of the safest places to be in New Mexico, though students don't feel safe on campus. He said he would like to see more than 100 students attend the upcoming Campus Safety Walk on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. to change that perception.
