Here's to UNM leadership for making the right moves
August 24Editor, I want to congratulate the UNM administration and Board of Regents for some recent great decisions, some of which were pretty bold for UNM.

Welcome back to school! New students, welcome to UNM! How are you feeling? I hope you stay well and healthy all year, but just in case, I want you to know you can get health care right here on campus.
Editor, UNM’s Yellow Ribbon Program fails our veterans. As many of our military brothers and sisters return from tours of duty overseas, I can only hope that our appreciation for them is greater than what they are sacrificing to keep us safe and free to pursue an education.
Editor, As of 2007, the Rio Grande was listed as one of 10 endangered rivers by the World Wildlife Fund.
Editor, I would like to express my disappointment and anger with the policy used to enroll students into graduate school.
Now’s the time to ditch your car and take the city bus to work or to class. UNM and the City of Albuquerque have once again agreed to give free bus rides to all students and staff.
Want to live longer? As it turns out, we may have the answer. A report in the last issue of Science showed a dramatic difference between the life span of two different sets of rhesus monkeys in a 20-year study.

Want to live longer? As it turns out, we may have the answer. A report in the last issue of Science showed a dramatic difference between the life span of two different sets of rhesus monkeys in a 20-year study. The results were so shocking that scientists have already begun seeking additional funding for another 20 years of research.
Is it just me, or did we trade the Cold War for a Colder War in the 21st century? We seem to have collected more enemies in the last couple decades, and worse, they seem to be getting more dangerous. Remember when our favorite rancher, George W. Bush, called them the Axis of Evil? We always need a bogeyman (or men) to prop up support for military action.
Editor, On more than one occasion, I stopped by the one-stop system, located in the old Financial Aid office, to take care of my business involving the admissions, financial aid and registrar's offices. While I admit the one-stop system adds speed and accessibility of records in a central location, I also see a larger problem developing: privacy.
Last month, the House passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act, or the Waxman-Markey energy bill, a flawed but progressive piece of legislation aimed at reducing America's carbon emissions in the fight against climate change. Though ACES establishes a weak "carbon trading" plan, it is the first comprehensive anti-global-warming bill that has a chance at successfully passing in both houses of Congress.
Editor, Images of President Obama in Moscow bring to mind the last time I saw a picture of a black man in Moscow. This was an international student from Africa who was murdered in a racially motivated hate crime, as part of a wave of such incidents that have not stopped in Russia.
Editor, Wyking Jones was a fantastic selection by head basketball coach Steve Alford. I am very familiar with Alford and Jones. When I went to high school, as a freshman, my coach showed us a shooting instructional film with Steve Alford - this was back in the late '80s.
Political sex scandals are just about all the same. Man cheats on wife. Man gets caught. Man makes tight-lipped statement at a news conference, suffocated with awkwardness. Wife looks jaded and dead inside. Kids probably take up drugs shortly afterward. It's routine stuff, and we're left to file the adulterers away as pigheaded fellows who assumed their power excused them from the rules - of governance and of matrimony.
The gay marriage debate has evolved from a whisper of discontent to a roaring, mud-slinging brawl. The situation could be mildly called a snafu, and more accurately termed something I can't print in a newspaper. Everyone has an opinion. Not only do people stand on both sides of and astride the metaphorical fence, there are people tunneling underneath and flying overhead.
