Power of eminent domain can devastate minority groups

Editor, The Fifth Amendment of the Constitution endows the power of eminent domain - the use of power by a government or an institution authorized by that government to acquire private property from citizens without their consent. Whoever is taking this property is required by this amendment to provide "just compensation.

GPSA needs president who will fight for fiscal discipline

Editor, B. Lee Drake should take some classes in the Social Sciences building. He said, "GPSA is like the House." Should we call him Mr. Speaker if he is elected president? What would the speaker do to address the issue below? There is a proposed plan to build a weight room for students at a total cost of $120 million, and the administration wants to tack an additional $200 in fees (taxes) to our tuition bill every year for 30 years.

A government beyond grad students

I'm running unopposed for the position of Graduate and Professional Student Association council chairman. I'm a returning student who is seeking a dual degree in masters of public administration as well as community and regional planning. By way of introduction, I've been a community organizer most of my adult life.

Elect representatives who will listen to students' concerns

Editor, With the current financial crisis and the University's standing in the eyes of the Legislature, it's time for students to realize the power that their combined voices can have. This year's ASUNM elections will be held April 15, and because representatives will work only as hard as the pressure their electorate places on them, educated voters will be a necessity in creating a more effective and active student government.

If elected, ASUNM candidate would be voice for undergrads

Editor, My name is Evan Harris, and I am writing to announce my candidacy for ASUNM vice president. Elections are April 15, so I will be tabling around campus as much as possible over the next two weeks. I encourage everyone who decides to vote in the ASUNM elections to come talk to me before casting their ballot.

War on drugs a failed policy that continues to take its toll

Editor, This is in response to Friday's column, "The deceit of Obama's drug war." America's drug crusade has a 94-year record of abject failure. Since drug prohibition began in 1914, the drug warriors have not produced one positive result from their drug bans.

Obama's plan would bolster education system

President Obama has challenged all Americans to overcome the stale debates that have paralyzed progress on education so that we can offer every child everywhere in this country the chance to out-compete any worker anywhere in the world. That is a central mission of the budget Obama is submitting to Congress.

Letters to editor should have evidence to back up claims

Editor, I believe in freedom of speech, but it amazes me why the Daily Lobo would waste paper and ink printing the inane letter to the editor from Ralph Bachli in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. His point is that "President David Schmidly is perfectly aligned with our future prosperity as part of a global community.

The deceit of Obama's drug war

There has not been love lost between Mexico and the United States since the U.S. annexed what was half of Mexico's territory in 1848. Since then, there has been a national psychology that instinctively distrusts any offers of help from Gringoland. This has become more and more apparent with the Obama administration's new plans to militarize the border between these two neighbors.

Column: At UNM, change came from below

Last year, the Graduate and Professional Student Association Council created funding and incentives for a legislative graduate and professional student advocacy team. Two months ago, GPSA Council Chairwoman Lissa Knudsen assembled that team. The team she assembled represented diverse backgrounds and skill sets including information technology, law, public relations, bill drafting, research design, lobbying, community organizing and accounting.

Choosing not to drive saves money, lives and the planet

Editor, I am glad I don't have a car. I would not keep a car if you gave me one for free. I haven't owned a car since 1979. I enjoy the freedom of not having a car. I save much money and many resources: oil, metals, rubber, etc. I avoid all parking and traffic tickets.
