Police should help out, not just collect evidence

Editor, I read an entry on the Stop the War Machine Listserv today that spurred me to write this letter. At issue is red handprints around the UNM campus placed during a demonstration by Stop the War Machine. The University's argument is the "damage" happened during the demonstration on March 15.

Sex education should be based on facts, not morals

Editor, This letter is in response to John Bauer's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. Bauer, please let the rest of us decide what our sexual values are. Your input is certainly fine, but the underlying expectation that we all adopt your values is insulting.

China compares with Israel in human rights violations

Editor, Readers found Richard M. Berthold's column published in the Daily Lobo on March 14 in which he compared Israel with the Nazi government objectionable. In late 2006, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu toured the U.

Diet, exercise prevent diabetes

Dear Dr. Peg, It seems like a lot of people have diabetes now. Some of my friends even have insulin pumps. If I stop eating sugar, can I prevent getting diabetes? Dear Sugar-free, You're right. A lot of people have diabetes now, more and more every year. It is a huge health problem and a major cause of disability and death.

RIAA must stop targeting students at universities

Editor, The mob often takes out its enemies in a gruesome fashion as a way to warn others to fall in line. That could be said about the campaign over the past four years instigated by the dreaded Recording Industry Association of America, which has been on a mission to stop or slow down the practice of illegal music downloading from the Internet.

University must support students who are parents

Editor, I'm glad to read that the UNM Board of Regents has decided to recognize parents by forming a parents' association. After all, parents and families are important to the future of UNM. But parents of UNM students aren't the only families connected to UNM.

Israel column was shallow, deceptive and full of hatred

Editor, A number of articles were published recently in the Daily Lobo concerning the Israeli-Arab conflict. While the majority of them, if not all, were superficial and misleading, the last one, by Richard M. Berthold, was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The Setonian
Opinion

Sex education should have foundation in moral values

Editor, Jason Darensburg's letter published in the Daily Lobo on March 13 concerning high rates of sexually transmitted infections among teenagers sadly misses the mark. To blame the Bush administration and religious fanatics for these sad statistics lacks both depth and understanding.

Tirade on Israel marked by inexplicable jaded hatred

Editor, Richard M. Berthold joined academics' agitation propaganda against Israel in the March 14 edition of the Daily Lobo. Agitation propaganda is used to discredit and delegitimize Israel's right to existential defense. Appallingly, Berthold juxtaposes the actions of Hitler's racist Nazi regime with Israel's justifiable security efforts as he declares "the haunting echoes of that same evil presence in Israel's policies.

FDA should disapprove of toxic chemical in food

Editor, Aspartame is a proven neurotoxic artificial sweetener whose approval was forced in 1981 by the then-CEO of Searle - none other than Donald Rumsfeld. He made $12 million to $15 million on that deal alone. Efforts proceed in Hawaii and New Mexico to ban it.

Q&A: Ronn Cantu

Five years of deception, the deaths of several hundred thousand Iraqi civilians and 4,000 U.S. soldiers, projected costs as high as $3 trillion, and the proliferation of militant Islamism - by any calculation, the Iraq war has been a historic calamity. For on-the-ground perspective, I spoke to Ronn Cantu, an active-duty sergeant in the U.

Schools shouldn't accept anti-Semitic hate speech

Editor, The trend for universities in the U.S., including UNM, to approve, either directly or tacitly, increasingly direct anti-Israel and anti-Jewish rhetoric is very disturbing. Richard Berthold's column published in the Daily Lobo on March 14 comparing Israel with Nazi Germany and saying Jews have used up their karma is a good example.

Students expel education in favor of entertainment

Editor, In response to the article published in the Daily Lobo on March 6 regarding ratemyprofessors.com, I'd like to address several problems I see with the negative portrayal of professors who focus on education rather than on entertainment. I am appalled to know that education in the university setting is being undervalued and neglected while students favor less difficult, more recreational classes.

History repeats itself in Israel

Modern Israel is ostensibly a secular democracy, yet also proclaims itself a Jewish state - a bold declaration for a society that possesses a significant non-Jewish population. And while one might have thought that a people who have been persecuted for two millennia would be sensitized to the suffering of others, Israel has, in fact, often played the bully and squandered whatever karma the Jews have earned in all that time.

Students with disabilities lack space in Zimmerman

Editor, Zimmerman Library is not doing a very effective job of providing space for students with disabilities to study in. In fact, during the fire at Zimmerman Library, the administration took two of the available rooms in the Alice Clark Complex for students with disabilities to provide the director of Zimmerman Library with a new, spacious office.

U.S. must get with times in providing sex education

Editor, All Daily Lobo readers should be shocked and appalled at the results of a devastating study showing that one in four teenage girls have a sexually transmitted disease, which has been making headlines lately. This is an outrage, not because so many children at younger ages are having sex in this country, but it's an outrage that so many children are so profoundly ignorant about sex and its potential consequences.

Aramark rips off students and treats workers poorly

Editor, There have been multiple letters in the Daily Lobo concerning Aramark's contract here at UNM. Robert-Paul LeMay, Chris Cuellar, Amanda Skotchdopole and David Martinez have all stated the same facts: Students do not have to eat Aramark food, or it's not that bad.

Argument against exhibit a different kind of wrong

Editor, In a letter published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday, Laura Perlichek wrote about the recent protests by medical students against the exhibit of skinned, plasticized human bodies. Concerning the protesters' statements that the exhibit ought to be boycotted because the public doesn't know if the bodies have been illegally obtained from China, Perlichek wrote, "This may just be my inner English major speaking out, but isn't this what we refer to in the compositional world as hasty generalization?" Perlichek certainly had a valid point in sensing something logically awry with the protesters' statements.

False claims easy to make when facts are not in order

Editor, Fascism is an easy word to throw around when someone does not like what he or she hears and does not want to take the time to research the matter. Gregory Evans' letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday regarding the protest against the human bodies exhibit was ironic in that regard.
