LETTER: ASUNM election to rock campus

Editor, As the spring season comes into full bloom all across the University of New Mexico campus, colorful campaign messages written with chalk and typed onto fliers also begin making their yearly appearance. Time is quickly approaching for the ASUNM Spring Election, which will be held on April 16.

COLUMN: War means only one thing

by Dan Chan Daily Texan (U. Texas-Austin) (U-WIRE) AUSTIN, Texas — Doesn’t everyone hate it when their younger sibling plays the sympathy card to get out of trouble? Or when someone exaggerates a colossal disaster in an attempt to fight for a minuscule cause? Aren’t people perplexed when the gardener ignores the weeds and goes after the tulip? Apparently not.

LETTER: Nice to see chalking of ‘poon’ on campus

Editor, I woke up last Thursday morning and the first thing I heard was the question, “Did you guys see ‘poon’ written everywhere?” I knew already that this was certainly a more interesting morning than usual. Last Thursday, as I rose to attend my classes, I saw something juvenile; a 16 foot-tall “POON” written on the Zimmerman Library building’s front brick.

LETTER: Darnell could make U.S. ‘perfect’ place

Editor, Scott Darnell is a visionary. His eloquent description of the issues plaguing America today is only weakened by his reluctance to take his philosophy to its end. Followers of Darnell’s philosophy should first adopt a uniform dress so that they may be easily identified.

LETTER: Police use of verbal brutality unneeded

Editor, I take the role of civil police seriously. However, in the past few years I have had a few run-ins with the police at parties, on the road, even at my house, that have really left my confidence in their role "to serve and protect" unsure at best.

COLUMN: 'Dead Week' work in progress

by Jennifer Onuska ASUNM President and Amy Cook and Kevin Stevenson ASUNM Senators No tests, no new material and no assignments the week before finals. Wouldn't that be nice? Well, that's how it would be with ASUNM's proposed Prep Week.

Letter: Lobo just another leftwing propaganda site

Editor, I thought that the Daily Lobo was an "independent student newspaper." I have noticed that you seem to print a large number of non-student letters. Why is that? Is it that the letters sent to you by students don't line up with your ideological position and as such are not worth printing? Or is it that the students have just given up on the Daily Liberal and don't write letters? I find the Opinion section of the Daily Liberal to be a real let down.

COLUMN: Minority twists laws for gain

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo Columnist The following are certain areas of political/social life where members of a minority group are not only being protected by the federal government, but also aided by government or independent agencies in such a way that minority "protection" is causing harm or intense unfairness to the area's majority group.

Letter: Censoring CDs, but not movies unequal

Editor, I have been seeing many letters complaining about different aspects of the war in Iraq. While I feel that this is a very important issue for everyone, I would like to shed some light on a problem that has been plaguing our country for some years now.

LETTER: United States' actions childish, deplorable

Editor, We are now going through perhaps the saddest period in our nation's history since the Civil War. The Bush administration has plunged the United States into an unjust, unmotivated and unnecessary war that has divided our country. The law-of-the-jungle rush to war has deeply offended those of us who believe that the highest priority for the United States is to live up to the principles on which this country rests: individual liberty, collective democracy and respect for the law and the views of others.

LETTER: Bush ignores basic rights

Editor, President Bush tells us there is no democracy in Iraq. It is ruled by a government with little regard for civil liberties. Dissidents are watched, harassed and arrested without warrants or trials. Their privacy can be violated at any moment, their homes can be secretly searched, their phone conversations and correspondences monitored by the police.

COLUMN: Small creature speaks out

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Hi. My name is Myra and I am a prairie dog. I live in one of the isolated prairie dog villages in Albuquerque. For some reason, many members of your species seem to hate mine. I think it is probably because they don't understand us.
