COLUMN: TV promotes much blood lust

by Robert Carey Massachusetts Daily Collegian (U. Massachusetts-Amherst) (U-WIRE) AMHERST, Mass. -- For the Romans, nothing was more entertaining than the games. The bloodier the better. They were enthralled by the mayhem of the gladiatorial arena.

COLUMN: Bush's administration failing at all diplomacy

by Katy Noone Massachusetts Daily Collegian (U. Massachusetts-Amherst) (U-WIRE) AMHERST, Mass. -- It may come as no surprise to most of us that the extensive media coverage of the past few days has consisted mostly of dramatic, emotional images, often lacking in-depth coverage of historical relevance and political importance.

COLUMN: Decisions need actual logic

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist The Physical Plant Department is in the process of re-seeding Johnson Field on the east side of Johnson Gym. One of the requirements mandated by a federal bureaucracy dictated that we do an environmental impact report on the area being re-seeded so we don't negatively impact any endangered species or archaeological sites.

Letter; Lobo too negative in Greek coverage

Editor, For years now I have noticed a trend that the Daily Lobo practices. The trend is to print mainly negative stories about the Greek System. Yes, I have occasionally seen positive stories about the men and women in fraternities and sororities. I also understand that writing stories on community service, the high GPA of Greeks, or even campus involvement may be quite boring, but at least then a fair and true representation would show all aspects of Greek life.

Letter: Women's basketball great asset for UNM

Editor, A hearty congratulation is in order to the Lobos after their two victories in the NCAA tournament. Coach Flanagan and his staff have built a solid, well-respected program with many good student-athletes stepping up to contribute from both the past and present, too.

COLUMN: Media labels war protesters

by Jen Kosakowski Daily Targum (Rutgers U.) (U-WIRE) NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — It has become increasingly obvious to me in recent weeks that there has been a surge in writings that vilify and invalidate the anti-war activist. There has never been much tolerance for dissent in this nation, but the proliferation and escalation of such rhetoric and its attempts to disengage anti-war activists should be questioned.

COLUMN: Gaining trust of Iraqis not easy

by Sean Misko Daily Collegian (Pennsylvania State U.) (U-WIRE) UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Far from the scripted “shock and awe” promised by military planners, the first official shots of the U.S.-led war with Iraq were brief and took many experts by surprise.

COLUMN: Actor Sheen has right to voice his opinion

by Scott Wacholtz The Miami Hurricane (U. Miami) (U-WIRE) CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Over the last few months, actor Martin Sheen, who portrays the President of the United States on the NBC television program “The West Wing,” has appeared at a number of anti-war rallies and was the star of a TV commercial advertising the “virtual march on Washington” to protest a possible war.

COLUMN: America should rebuild Iraq

Staff Editorial The Crimson White (U. Alabama) (U-WIRE) TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — With the invasion of Iraq seemingly inevitable, an important question is what happens when the fight is over? America cannot afford to continue its less-than-stellar track record of state building when the time comes to rebuild Iraq.

LETTER: Barbara’s cookies could cure her son

Editor, I believe our president is ill. I believe him to be of failing health, both, physically and mentally. How else can one justify his current international actions? As a parent and son, I strongly believe in “a mother’s love” as a form of healing.

COLUMN: 'Freedom' fries not enough

by Dustin Habermann Daily Lobo Guest Columnist In response to France's betrayal of our war on Iraq, legislation has come up to change the name of "french fries" to "freedom fries." In my humble opinion, this is just what our country needs to help boost morale for the war.

COLUMN: World anti-war, not anti-American

by Holly Wray The Maneater (U. Missouri) 03/21/2003 (U-WIRE) ALICANTE, Spain -- I've never been proud to be an American. But this is the first time I've ever consciously tried to hide my nationality. In the past few weeks, when I've spoken in broken Spanish to professors at my Spanish university in Alicante, to librarians when I checked out books, to train station employees when I bought tickets for weekend trips, I spoke quickly and quietly, trying to conceal my American accent.

COLUMN: Lobbying brings in more new benefits

by Jennifer Onuska ASUNM President and Duff Lill ASUNM Lobby Director Earlier in the year, we told you about our ASUNM lobby initiatives. We are pleased to announce that we feel optimistic about all of our goals. Our fist priority was to keep any tuition credit -- tuition increase -- as low as possible.

LETTER: UNM must foster all views

To the UNM community: As historic events unfold in Iraq and around the world, the University of New Mexico community will strive to deal constructively with the breadth, depth and consequences of recent and breaking developments. As individuals within the UNM community -- students, faculty, staff -- each of us will deal with our own feelings about the situation.

LETTER: Foreign students should get counseling during Iraq war

Editor, I beg every reader to take a minute and imagine how the violence and hostilities in Iraq might feel in the heart of an international student at UNM. Contrary to accepted prejudice, not all of them are terrorists. Indeed, what I have witnessed from them during 25 years is fascination and relief at finally living in such a free society.

COLUMN: Groups castigate religous aid

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo Columnist Watchdog groups in America find fights to fight solely for the purpose of gaining wealth or notoriety; they often blow issues out of proportion and lose sight of their well-intended purposes due to their hysteric over-sensationalism of actions or events.

LETTER: U.S. does not have sole claim to world

Editor, The following is a copy of what I sent to New Mexico congressional officials Wednesday, March 12. New Mexico Congressional Officials: I would like to express my disgust to you regarding the recent official name change of french fries and French toast to "freedom" fries and "freedom" toast, in three federal House office buildings, spearheaded by two Republican lawmakers.
