EDITORIAL: Flag meant for dissent

Staff Editorial University Daily Kansan (U. Kansas) (U-WIRE) LAWRENCE, Kan. -- It's not a mystery why 21-year-old Toni Smith has come under criticism. Smith, a women's basketball player for Division III Manhattanville College, turns away from the American flag during the "Star-Spangled Banner" before each of her team's games.

COLUMN: New bill mocks academia

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist The New Mexico State Legislature is confirming a suspicion I have entertained for 30 years: its only serious interest in the University of New Mexico is that it provide winning football and, especially, basketball teams.

COLUMN: Treaty furthers women’s rights

Knight Ridder-Tribune The Dallas Morning News Women have been called the canaries in a coal mine. How they are treated is a good indication of how toxic a society is. Think Afghanistan. Think how women’s repression, economic stagnation and terrorism are linked in countries around the world.

LETTER: Take guest column with grain of salt

Editor, Steve Chavez's guest column "Many peace groups corrupt," in the March 11 Lobo used an e-mail reply from me without my permission to support a ridiculous misnomer to classify the New Mexico Solidarity Network as somehow attached to the Communist Party.

LETTER: Troop support should be to bring them back

Editor, I love this country and every decent citizen in it with all my heart. Especially the brave men and women who have sworn to protect it. They are burdened with a very hard and necessary job and for that I admire and thank them. Unfortunately, somewhere in the sea of rhetoric, somebody has come up with the idea if you're against impending war with Iraq; you're against the people who will be fighting the war.

LETTER: Lobo misrepresents Wednesday’s protest

Editor, Your coverage of the student anti-war demonstrations was awful. There are several inaccuracies and misrepresentations, which need to be addressed. First, the title of the main article, “Pro-Bush, Anti-War Protesters Face Off,” misrepresents both the content of the story and the nature of the protest.

COLUMN: Alumni Parents

by Michele Decamp Technician (North Carolina State U.) (U-WIRE) RALEIGH, N.C. — I am sure at least a few people who will read this column had parents who attended North Carolina State University during their youth. Those students are considered legacy students because they are continuing their family’s proud tradition of attending NCSU.

LETTER: Anti-war protesters act inconsiderately

Editor, I do not intend to cover the topic of war. That is not the purpose of this letter. I intend only to discuss the protest on Wednesday. I am glad people protested on Wednesday because that gave the student body the opportunity to see what war protestors actually do.

LETTER: Bullying UNM ROTC members not peaceful

Editor, I am a liberal. I support many liberal ideas and concepts, though it is becoming increasingly difficult to be taken seriously because of ignorant displays such as some of the events that took place at the recent anti-war protest. Although there were many people and speakers that were well informed, there were also many students, or possibly non-students, that were sitting in little groups smoking pot.

COLUMN: Anti-war signs not exactly 'anti-Bush'

by Don McIver Daily Lobo Guest Columnist Over the weekend, our car died. And after several fruitless attempts at getting it started, we resorted to calling a tow truck. The tow truck driver, after pulling the car up on to the truck, said that he'd follow us back to the house where the car would sit until I figured out what to do with it.

LETTER: Protesting will not save our freedoms

Editor, On Wednesday, March 5, I was personally disgusted by the way my fellow Americans acted. This is my response: For weeks now, I have noticed the "No War on Iraq" campaign put on by the people who don't understand what this conflict is truly about.
