LETTER: Boldness will protect us
March 7Editor, To the students of UNM: You have joined with thousands of students around the nation in being willing to raise your questions of concern. As a nation, we face an administration that is preparing to launch a war that poses most serious and devastating consequences for the world.
LETTER: Cannabis prohibition violates Constitution
March 6Editor, Our country was founded on the premise that all men and women should have the right to pursue happiness however they see fit, as long as they are not violating the rights of others. Yet, today, the U.S. federal government violates this principle with the prohibition of the cannabis plant.
LETTER: Legislation to lower entrance standards
March 6Editor, A disastrous House Bill 581 is looming in Santa Fe. If passed, it will lower and/or set academic entrance and eligibility requirements for student-athletes at UNM and other New Mexico state universities to that of the lowest -- for academic entrance requirements and eligibility -- conference school or lowest school in the NCAA (if the state university isn't in a conference), i.
LETTER: Protest war by living simply
March 6Editor, I oppose all war. I oppose all weapons of war. I voted for no one for U.S. Senate and House in last November's election. None of the New Mexican candidates for Congress opposed all war and all weapons of war. There is not a dime's worth of difference between most Republican and most Democratic members of Congress on robbing and murdering our neighbors abroad.
LETTER: Irresponsible protestors dangerous
March 6Editor, This is an open letter to the irresponsible idiots who marched through the chemistry building protesting a possible war against Saddam Hussein Wednesday afternoon. You are certainly at liberty to have your protests on campus outside of the buildings, but when you bring your disruptive noise into a building with laboratory classes in progress, your "expression of freedom of speech" comes closer to attempted assault.
LETTER: Smoking hazards foolishly ignored
March 5Editor, Our government closes down, puts on notice, and fines restaurants for guacamole and Alfredo sauce that isn't the correct temperature. Our government gets involved when a restaurant uses wiping cloths improperly. Our government demands that restaurants that are open to the public (and are therefore public places,) not store food near cleaning products, clean their ice machines and supply paper towels to their customers.
COLUMN: Delusions an itchy problem
March 5by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Of all the bug calls I get, the ones that are the most frustrating are from people who suffer from delusory parasitosis. Delusory parasitosis is a condition where someone feels insects, mites or worms crawling on them.
LETTER: Criticism of beliefs not true
March 5Editor, It is clear that, despite his stance "against" ideology, Steve Chavez is operating under a particular ideology himself. In his attempt to discredit current and past political groups working in the peace movement, Chavez claims that these groups are inherently corrupt because of their promotion of certain ideological positions.
EDITORIAL: Senate to decide on cloning ban
March 5Staff Editorial Daily Targum (Rutgers U.) (U-WIRE) NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- In the coming weeks the U.S. Senate will have to make a decision on the issue of cloning. Currently the House has passed a bill banning human cloning and research cloning.
LETTER: Green's party status ignored
March 5Editor, The latest attempt in the ongoing attempt to litigate, legislate and re-interpret the Green Party off the ballot has passed two house committees and will soon be on its way to the state Senate. House Bill 628 increases the registration threshold for major party status, not by doubling or tripling it, but by a whopping 30-fold or 3,000 percent increase! If this draconian requirement were in place elsewhere the Democrats would not have full-ballot access in Utah nor would Republicans in the District of Columbia.
LETTER: Protest groups likely allied with Marxism
March 5Editor, Steve Chavez's guest column outlining the insidious influence that communist and radical socialist groups have on the local "peace movement" only scratches the surface of this shadowy world. If you navigate the Stop the War Machine's Web site, the first link in the "Other Resources" section of the site is to the International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) organization.
COLUMN: U.S. shows hypocrisy by disregarding rights
March 4by Lenzy Krehbiel Daily O’Collegian (Oklahoma State U.) (U-WIRE) STILLWATER, Okla. — Over the past few decades, hypocrisy has become a standard in this country. Our national anthem calls America the “land of the free,” yet racial profiling is now acceptable to many in certain circumstances in light of recent events.
COLUMN: Rising malpractice costs detrimental
March 4by Ashley Pierson Iowa State Daily (Iowa State U.) (U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa — Imagine you are living it up out in Las Vegas, gambling all your hard-earned dough and buying drinks left and right for you, your seven closest friends and the fat, rich, balding businessman you just met at the craps table.
LETTER: Legalizing cannabis not a dangerous act
March 4Editor, Eric Howerton did a good job of explaining the irrationality and irresponsibility of the anti-marijuana ads plastering the air waves. He also shows some understanding of the history of marijuana laws. So, I can’t understand how he came to such an absurd conclusion that legalization would be dangerous until we change our attitudes about marijuana use.
COLUMN: Many peace groups corrupt
March 4by Steve Chavez Daily Lobo Guest Columnist In the 1980’s, many peace groups marched against U.S. policy in Central America. I began attending some of their meeting in 1986. I also began intense research on the groups and I am now doing the same with the groups of today.
LETTER: Hidden motives in drug war
March 3Editor, Truth to tell, the drug warrior politicians, officials, media and civilians secretly don’t list victory as an objective in their expensive and oppressive trillion-dollar war. When they do spout their “zero tolerance/total victory” rhetoric, how many of your readers actually believe them? How many actually believe that this year’s multibillion-dollar drug war budget will be the one that will achieve total victory after decades of billion dollar budgets have totally failed? Just remember that the drug czars’ and warriors’ jobs depend on the perpetual prosecution of, but never a victory in, the drug war.
