EDITORIAL: Power of Internet petitions explored

I received an interesting e-mail petition the other day, titled "Impeach Bush." In fact, a Web site has actually been created at www.votetoimpeach.org for this online petition. Most people are aware of online petitions -- one just went around earlier this month asking to boycott Vanity Fair and writer letters to the magazine for printing a column that many in the Hispanic community found offensive.

LETTER: UNM music unethical

Editor, I read with dismay, but not surprise, about the theft of two bassoons from the UNM Music Department valued at $14,000. (See Daily Lobo News in Brief, Feb. 18.) The problem for the Music Department is not one of instrument theft but one of professional ethics.

COLUMN: Estrada naysayers hypocritical

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo Columnist Miguel Estrada isn't probably someone with an immense amount of name recognition -- yet. President Bush appointed him to an open seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals, District Columbia Circuit on May 9, 2001; he immigrated to the United States from Honduras when he was 15 years old, graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1986, has been a clerk for a Supreme Court justice, an assistant U.

EDITORIAL: Drug policy limits aid

Staff Editorial Daily Texan (U. Texas-Austin) (U-WIRE) AUSTIN, Texas -- U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., wants to keep students in college. Due to this desire, Frank and 39 co-sponsors proposed H.R. 685 last week, a bill that would repeal a law barring students with drug convictions from receiving financial aid.

LETTER: UNM hypocritical about free speech

Editor, Included in your Feb. 12 career issue was a statement of academic codes of conduct; “faculty members . . . an obligation . . . to foster and defend freedom of inquiry and instruction and free expression.” But when a respected faculty member expressed this freedom in regard to Sept.

COLUMN: Free speech police now our government

by Joshua Sterns The Post (Ohio U.) (U-WIRE) ATHENS, Ohio — The free speech police are back again, but this time instead of the ACLU, it’s our own government. A story mostly ignored by the media suggests certain commonly used phrases may be too offensive to liberal sensibilities to be uttered without strong repercussions.

LETTER: Berthold’s argument that war barters with U.S. values dubious

Editor, As an American who happens to support U.S. military action in Iraq, I am appalled by columnist Richard Berthold’s arrogance and sense of moral superiority in “War Barters with U.S. Values.” Just so Berthold and others like him know, that war is a horrible affair does not escape most Americans and especially not those who support military action in Iraq.

COLUMN: On-campus bar might work

Students: Imagine the ability to unwind after a nerve-racking exam. Imagine meeting for a study group, a pen in one hand and a frothy beer in the other. Staff: Imagine sneaking away during lunch and nipping some schnapps, easing the doldrums of filing papers and answering phones.

COLUMN: Snakes part of N.M. habitat

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Warm weather is approaching and it will soon be time to go hiking, camping and generally enjoying the outdoors. One of the so-called hazards of living in New Mexico is that we have at least nine species of rattlesnakes that live in the areas where we like to hike and camp.

by Yousef Munayyer Massachusetts Daily Collegian (U. Massachusetts-Amherst) (U-WIRE) AMHERST, Mass. -- Some years back, maybe when I was 12, I remember seeing a T-shirt in the street market in Jerusalem with a picture of a fighter jet on it and the words "Don't worry America .

COLUMN: Well-intentioned act paves way for draft

by Casey Jacketta Daily Utah Chronicle (U. Utah) (U-WIRE) SALT LAKE CITY -- President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act, enacted last July, does nothing but leave many children behind. The act, which was heralded as a blessing to failing education systems around the country, hasn't lived up to its hype.

COLUMN: Deciphering draft proposal

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist Here's a unique idea: propose a draft to oppose a war. That's exactly what U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel appears to have done. According to press releases issued on Jan. 7 and Jan. 10, Rangel proposed the Universal National Service Act of 2003 for two reasons.

LETTER: U.S. foreign policy not worth defending

Editor, Saturday, millions of people around the globe marched against a U.S. war on Iraq, including 5-8,000 in Santa Fe. I was there and it was a great event. I write today out of concern that many Americans are still unfamiliar with the extent of the global opposition to U.

LETTER: War on terrorism futile

Editor, Are any readers of this paper old enough to remember the war on poverty? It was a Johnson administration program in the '60s that got sidetracked by Vietnam. That's the "war" in Vietnam, which was a real war, unlike the "war" on poverty, which was a biggish social program supposed to do away with unemployment and homelessness and the like.

EDITORIAL: Women’s rights up in air with Bush’s lead

Women, raise your hands if you would keep going to an obstetrician-gynecologist who prescribed “prayer” and specific “Scripture readings” for your pre-menstrual syndrome symptoms. If you believe prayer will eradicate your menstrual cramps, then perhaps it would be best if you stop reading right now.

COLUMN: War barters with U.S. values

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist War is a horrible affair, a fact that seems to escape many Americans. Not surprisingly, the single senior official in the Bush administration who has actually been in conflict, Colin Powell, was the only one to resist our rush to war, though it appears that party loyalty has triumphed over principles.
