COLUMN: Aiming for steps forward
February 24by Heather Gabel ASUNM Vice President As I sit staring at the computer, I wonder what I should tell the student body this week. Of course, I also ponder the question, "I wonder if anyone actually reads these?" As an optimist I assume that everyone is reading these columns and becoming highly versed in the comings and goings of their student body.
Editorial: Grammys surprise every once in awhile
February 24Staff Editorials Minnesota Daily (U. Minnesota) (U-WIRE) MINNEAPOLIS -- It is Grammy time again. On Sunday night some very well known American and European pop stars -- some talented, some not -- will be feted for their musical achievements. The awards show will present major pop and rock record labels a rare opportunity to feel positive about their recording artists' successes; during the last several years record companies' revenues have declined precipitously.
COLUMN: Applying for CIA job just short of ridiculous
February 24by John Troyer Minnesota Daily (U. Minnesota) (U-WIRE) MINNEAPOLIS -- In mid-January I decided to apply for a job with the Central Intelligence Agency. I am not kidding. It turns out applying for a job at the CIA is incredibly easy and actually kind of a hoot.
EDITORIAL: Power of Internet petitions explored
February 24I received an interesting e-mail petition the other day, titled "Impeach Bush." In fact, a Web site has actually been created at www.votetoimpeach.org for this online petition. Most people are aware of online petitions -- one just went around earlier this month asking to boycott Vanity Fair and writer letters to the magazine for printing a column that many in the Hispanic community found offensive.
LETTER: UNM music unethical
February 21Editor, I read with dismay, but not surprise, about the theft of two bassoons from the UNM Music Department valued at $14,000. (See Daily Lobo News in Brief, Feb. 18.) The problem for the Music Department is not one of instrument theft but one of professional ethics.
COLUMN: Estrada naysayers hypocritical
February 21by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo Columnist Miguel Estrada isn't probably someone with an immense amount of name recognition -- yet. President Bush appointed him to an open seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals, District Columbia Circuit on May 9, 2001; he immigrated to the United States from Honduras when he was 15 years old, graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1986, has been a clerk for a Supreme Court justice, an assistant U.
EDITORIAL: Drug policy limits aid
February 21Staff Editorial Daily Texan (U. Texas-Austin) (U-WIRE) AUSTIN, Texas -- U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., wants to keep students in college. Due to this desire, Frank and 39 co-sponsors proposed H.R. 685 last week, a bill that would repeal a law barring students with drug convictions from receiving financial aid.
LETTER: UNM hypocritical about free speech
February 20Editor, Included in your Feb. 12 career issue was a statement of academic codes of conduct; “faculty members . . . an obligation . . . to foster and defend freedom of inquiry and instruction and free expression.” But when a respected faculty member expressed this freedom in regard to Sept.
COLUMN: Free speech police now our government
February 20by Joshua Sterns The Post (Ohio U.) (U-WIRE) ATHENS, Ohio — The free speech police are back again, but this time instead of the ACLU, it’s our own government. A story mostly ignored by the media suggests certain commonly used phrases may be too offensive to liberal sensibilities to be uttered without strong repercussions.
LETTER: Berthold’s argument that war barters with U.S. values dubious
February 20Editor, As an American who happens to support U.S. military action in Iraq, I am appalled by columnist Richard Berthold’s arrogance and sense of moral superiority in “War Barters with U.S. Values.” Just so Berthold and others like him know, that war is a horrible affair does not escape most Americans and especially not those who support military action in Iraq.
COLUMN: On-campus bar might work
Eric Howerton | February 20Students: Imagine the ability to unwind after a nerve-racking exam. Imagine meeting for a study group, a pen in one hand and a frothy beer in the other. Staff: Imagine sneaking away during lunch and nipping some schnapps, easing the doldrums of filing papers and answering phones.
COLUMN: Snakes part of N.M. habitat
February 19by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Warm weather is approaching and it will soon be time to go hiking, camping and generally enjoying the outdoors. One of the so-called hazards of living in New Mexico is that we have at least nine species of rattlesnakes that live in the areas where we like to hike and camp.
COLUMN: NATO's weakness comes to forefront
February 19by Yousef Munayyer Massachusetts Daily Collegian (U. Massachusetts-Amherst) (U-WIRE) AMHERST, Mass. -- Some years back, maybe when I was 12, I remember seeing a T-shirt in the street market in Jerusalem with a picture of a fighter jet on it and the words "Don't worry America .
COLUMN: Well-intentioned act paves way for draft
February 19by Casey Jacketta Daily Utah Chronicle (U. Utah) (U-WIRE) SALT LAKE CITY -- President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act, enacted last July, does nothing but leave many children behind. The act, which was heralded as a blessing to failing education systems around the country, hasn't lived up to its hype.
COLUMN: Deciphering draft proposal
February 18by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist Here's a unique idea: propose a draft to oppose a war. That's exactly what U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel appears to have done. According to press releases issued on Jan. 7 and Jan. 10, Rangel proposed the Universal National Service Act of 2003 for two reasons.
