LETTER: Diverse opinions on war fully appreciated

Editor, Your paper has long been called the "Daily Liberal," and for good reason. However, if I complain when you are one-sided in your focus, I must thank you when you are not. Last week, you published several items that convey the other side of the coin in regards to the crisis in Iraq.

COLUMN: Abortion debate still rages on

by Abigail Wheetley Daily Egyptian (Southern Illinois U.) (U-WIRE) CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The anniversary of Roe vs. Wade was last week. There were speeches, tears, protests and Lifetime movies. All in all, and good time was had in the midst of one of the most controversial topics ever brought before a society -- abortion.

LETTER: UNM staff salaries also cut unacceptably

Editor, In response to UNM President Garcia's comments reported in the Daily Lobo Jan. 29, 2003, that UNM faculty took a pay cut in the last year and that this was not acceptable to the University, what is also not acceptable is that UNM staff took a pay cut as well.

LETTER: Students will miss out on Trewhitt's expertise

Editor, I am a University of New Mexico journalism graduate and former Lobo staffer. I was lucky enough to have had the privilege of knowing and learning from Professor Hank Trewhitt. I remember first meeting him in a public affairs writing class and thinking, "How did the University land this guy?" Of course, that was before I knew that he was a "home-grown hero," so to speak.

EDITORIAL: First Lady delays poetry but not war

Poets and politics -- who would have thought it? After all, history has birthed poets such as Federico Garcia Lorca, who was arrested in Spain for assumed left-wing political associations. Today, Sam Hamill, the founding editor of Copper Canyon Press, was invited to a poetry symposium at the White House, organized by none other than First Lady Laura Bush.

COLUMN: ASUNM to lobby legislature

by Jennifer Onuska ASUNM President and Duff Lill ASUNM Lobby Director Once again, its that time of year when all of our local politicians meet in Santa Fe to determine our future as New Mexicans and more importantly students. Some items that they will face will directly affect the University of New Mexico such as funding for the University.

COLUMN: U.S. racial profiling questionable

COLUMN: Bush's energy policy lacks urgency

KRT Campus Media Call it retro-futuristic. President Bush's energy policy draws on the past and looks to the future, but skips the present entirely. In the State of the Union, the president called on Congress to pass his "comprehensive" energy package, which heavily subsidizes yesterday's technology -- coal, oil and nuclear power.

LETTER: Lobo balances war discourse

Editor, I find it amazing the Lobo would print something as awful as A. Slayton's opinion letter Jan. 31, but I realize that's your job as good journalists in a free society. Her concept of public censorship flies in the face of one of the reasons, in her words; it is "a privilege to be an American.

LETTER: Lobo 'anti-American'

Editor, I find it amazing that you can print something as awful as the opinion letter about the war in Wednesday's paper. I understand that it is just an opinion but anti-American opinions like that should not be given such publication. Whether or not people agree with who the president is or his decisions are their own opinions.

COLUMN: Hussein should just confess

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo Columnist Let's pretend for a moment that I was to go to the 7-Eleven and buy a case of Bud Light (not that I'm old enough or that I drink, but hey -- we're pretending). I walk back to my dorm and, going up the stairs, my Resident Assistant sees me with the case of beer -- or, more appropriately, what he thinks is a case of beer, but could also simply be an empty beer box that I may be using for a class project, or another type of beverage whose box looks like Bud Light's.

LETTER: U.S. must take action

Editor, War is a devastating creation of humans. To even consider killing innocent people is an atrocious idea. Why must supreme dictators feel that they must tyranize the weaker countries for the prospect of oil? Oil is indeed valuable and the cause for wars.

LETTER: Affirmative action in need of revision

Editor, Affirmative action is in the news once again. Conservatives are everywhere in the media telling us how affirmative action is bad for the United States. And, the conservative spins are quite problematic. Let's take at two of the more common ones.

COLUMN: Ending legal abortion won't solve problems

by Ayrel Clark Iowa State Daily (Iowa State U.) (U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa -- Is this the face of the enemy? This is a question posed on a flier to all those meandering around Room 2050 in Agronomy Hall. This is a rather interesting inquiry. Who is my enemy? Is the enemy of my friend my enemy? Does that make the friend of my enemy also my enemy? Are you confused yet? I certainly am.

COLUMN: Parking Services deceitful

Bill has a subscription to the local newspaper. One morning he notices that his paper has not been delivered. "I'm terribly sorry," says the periodical representative, "but we only print so many papers, and, well, not everyone can get their paper all the time, right?" Sally buys a movie ticket but before she can enter the theater, she is stopped by an employee.

COLUMN: Athletes not exploited

by Andy Fahey Mustang Daily (California Poly State U.) (U-WIRE) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- As the movie "Blue Chips" clearly pointed out, it's no secret that some college athletes get paid to play. The practice of showering NCAA athletes with gifts, whether in the form of currency, cars or other commodities, is obviously wrong.
