EDITORIAL: A time for thanks

This past semester has gone by rather quickly and we now find ourselves on the cusp of Thanksgiving break. Since it's a time for giving thanks and even the most cynical of us are being swayed to get in the spirit of the holiday, I thought I'd offer my thanks to the people who have worked hard this semester to make my job a bit more bearable.

COLUMN: E-Reserves a success

by Susan Magee General Library Columnist Which scenario sounds familiar? A. You go to the library to check out a course reserve only to find that one of your classmates has beaten you to it. B. You check a course reserve out and then find a vital page or two missing from the packet.

COLUMN: History didn't go anywhere

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo Columnist 'Tis the season -- to write papers. Yes, that dreaded time of year when concern for the great issues of the day falls prey to that ever greater concern: getting all the work due three weeks ago and all the work due within the next two weeks done before the grades are submitted.

LETTER: Businesses punished by banning smoking

Editor, The issue of smoking isn't about money or health, it's about choice. I hear liberals constantly arguing for "a woman's right to choose", well how about "a business owner's right to choose?" I understand that second hand smoke is dangerous and that maybe business will go up if a smoking ban is enacted, but it is not up to the state to make that choice.

LETTER: Mental health issues not addressed by court

by William Reitz Mustang Daily (California Poly State U.) U-Wire The Supreme Court issued an 11th-hour stay earlier this month that stopped the execution of 42-year-old convicted murderer James Colburn, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, a serious mental illness whose symptoms include delusions and hallucinations.

COLUMN: Civil liberties on hold lately

by Kevin McAbee Technician (North Carolina State U.) U-Wire More people than you would expect may be listening to your conversations on the telephone. And I am not referring to your teenage brother or nosy roommate. Now, the U.S. federal government may be listening in, making sure you aren't cooking up a batch of Anthrax or building a pipe bomb.

COLUMN: Women's lib has not ended objectification

by Casey Jacketta Daily Utah Chronicle (U. Utah) U-Wire I have always considered myself a liberated and liberal woman. I credit that to the leaps made by the women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Negative messages that are directed at women and girls from the media have never really affected me, until recently.

LETTER: Smoking ban will benefit businesses

Editor, Not only was I a restaurant worker for 10 years, but I smoked for six of those years. Therefore, I feel that I am authority enough to be able to enter the discussion on the proposed smoking ban for restaurants. Additionally, I have not smoked for long enough to support it.

COLUMN: Time for real conversation

by Marisa Demarco Daily Lobo Columnist My friend told me this story: Last week, some guy approached my friend while he was walking and asked him if he had a couple minutes to chat. Thinking the guy was a nervous-looking Jesus freak, he decided he would treat him respectfully, but decline the religion sale when it came up.

COLUMN: Alcohol ads still reach

by Jane Eisner Knight Ridder-Tribune I may not be the best arbiter of cool, but this sure seems cool to me: A lithe, laughing young woman wearing a pair of low-slung jeans and what looks like a black bra is pouring drops of liquid on her bare belly.

Column: Rights exercised in excess

Napoleon Bonaparte was, arguably, the bravest Civil War general in the history of the United States. He defeated Gen. George Washington Carver aboard a sinking oil ship, spontaneously gave birth to a head of iceberg lettuce and, most notably, invented time with nothing more than toothpicks and chewing gum.

Column: Third parties could be new way to go next election year

by Jeff Postelwait Daily O'Collegian (Oklahoma State U.) U-Wire So the big show is over. Actually, the show before the big show is over. We have a new, or at least rearranged, Congress. Who's going to try to be next in the White House has yet to be determined, though it won't be long before you'll be sick of hearing about it.

Column: Political parties more divided than ever now

by Annette Henke Idaho Argonaut (U. Idaho) U-Wire After reading one of my recent articles, someone I knew in high school with whom I hadn't chatted in a while asked me when I'd become a raging, raving liberal. Well, the "raving" part is easy enough to figure out: I get paid to rant and rave about the issues that matter to me, and hopefully, to the majority of my readership.
