EDITORIAL: Do your duty: Vote
October 1Ah, the mudslinging is in full swing. Nothing beats election year - any election year. Perhaps it's the media's predilection toward covering the most contentious races; perhaps it's the candidates stuffing campaign material on people's doors; perhaps it's even the falsely sincere handshaking, baby-kissing political appearances where the candidates all wear fake smiles and somehow seem to say nothing.
COLUMN: Presidential race goes to reality television in 2004
October 1by Bill Ferguson Knight Ridder-Tribune The seemingly endless parade of reality-based television shows took an interesting turn this week when executives at the FX network unveiled their plan to adapt the talent search theme used by shows like "American Idol" for the political arena.
LETTER: Richardson's tactics need criticism, work
September 30Editor, This short letter is in response to the "Richardson dismayed by low turnout" article on the front page of Friday's Daily Lobo. Last March, my girlfriend and her roommate attended a Democratic convention in support of Bill Richardson and the Democratic Party.
COLUMN: ASUNM welcomes feedback
September 30by Heather Gabel Daily Lobo Columnist I hope that you have been learning a lot about ASUNM through these columns this semester and feel that you have a better understanding of what your student government does and how it works. Now it is time for you to let us know what you think and see ASUNM in action.
COLUMN:Democratic despots real
September 30by Leah Caldwell U-Wire Hamid Karzai is such a hunk. There's no doubt about it, this post-Taliban leader has the beauty and the brains to make Afghanistan the country that it could never be under the Taliban. This conclusion, among others, was the product of a 16-paragraph article in The New York Times that reduced the plight of Afghan women to the distressing decision of what color burka to wear.
COLUMN: Value systems justify actions
September 27by Mike Wolff Daily Lobo Columnist Imperial war has always been waged on a pretext. The Aztecs conquered neighboring tribes because they needed an abundance of humans to sacrifice in honor of their gods. The Spaniards conquered Latin America to bring Christianity and civilization to the savages.
EDITORIAL: Unreported domestic violence feeds cycle
September 27Madelyne Gorman Toogood has caused a bit of a stir lately - namely from being caught on a store tape while she was beating her four-year-old daughter two weeks ago. The nation gasped as a blatant act of domestic violence was displayed to the public eye.
LETTER: West Nile Virus unlikely to affect UNM students
September 27Editor, While West Nile Virus has been found in several parts of New Mexico, including Bernalillo County, it is not something we should be worried about on campus. This disease, while serious, only seems to infect people more than 50 years old. While there are a number of us in that category, we still don't need to be worried, as mosquitoes aren't a problem on campus.
LETTER: Football team in need of discipline, not absolution
September 26Editor, I keep hearing various excuses why Coach Rocky Long and the Lobos lost to the Aggies Saturday. There is no reason why Coach Long and the Lobos shouldn't beat NMSU every year. The Lobos have better athletes, better facilities, play in a much more competitive football conference, have more fan support, and have more financial resources.
COLUMN: High drug costs leave human lives out of plan
September 26by Mari Armstrong-Hough U-Wire Drugs are expensive. Developing countries need drugs not only to address raging HIV/AIDS epidemics, but also to fight epidemics of malaria, tuberculosis, and various childhood diseases. But, forced by international intellectual property rights agreements to allow major commercial pharmaceutical corporations exclusive production rights, the cost of those drugs can make them unavailable.
LETTER: Bow Wow bows out, cuts Nob Hill culture
September 26Editor, Two weeks ago Bow Wow Records closed its doors for the last time. After 18 years of business, the once great staple of the Nob Hill had finally died. The death of Bow Wow was very personal to me. My father, Andrew Horwitz, started the business when I was a baby.
COLUMN: Dieting cults gain popularity
September 26by Jane Eisner Knight Ridder-Tribune The spring fashion collections that strutted down the runways in New York last week are, according to some of the snootier critics, an unimaginative throwback to the 1950s, evoking an era of pastel domesticity, illusory safety, even a kind of Eisenhower dullness.
COLUMN: Drug war hides U.S. actions
September 26by Ken Shores U-Wire Friday is marked as the National Day of Action Against Plan Colombia. Plan Colombia is the United States' current involvement in giving aid and training to the Colombian government and its paramilitary forces. Keep in mind the following is entirely attributed to a War on Drugs.
COLUMN: U.S. behind in stem-cell study
September 25by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist This past Sunday, California Gov. Gray Davis signed a law specifically allowing embryonic stem-cell research in the state. He is being vehemently opposed in this decision by the Bush administration and the Roman Catholic Church.
COLUMN: UNM Library additions based on student feedback
September 25by Susan Magee Daily Lobo Columnist In the 2001-02 school year, the General Library (Centennial, Center for Southwest Research, Fine Arts, Parish and Zimmerman) had almost 1.5 million visitors. Were you one of them? We've made some changes over the summer we hope you'll find beneficial.
