COLUMN: Voting commemorates Sept. 11 victims best

Listen up America, the best way to honor the innocent victims of Sept. 11 is not with made-for-TV specials and self-serving political rhetoric. The best way is to show the world that we take seriously our status as the longest continuous democracy, by thronging to the polls on Nov. 5 and voting.

COLUMN: Think before you miss the mark

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo Columnist One year ago today, I wrote a column about Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish new year - and Yom Kippur - for lack of a better translation, the day of atonement. Years being what they are, the last has come around to its close again and ushered in the new.

LETTER: Better ways to deal with Saddam than all-out war

Editor, There has been a lot of open talk about an attack on Iraq in order to remove Saddam Hussein from power. However, why would any logical person believe there actually will be any such action? Let's take this point-by-point. First of all, Bush and Cheney have verbalized such an action.

LETTER: New parking garage lacks ecological sense

Editor, I was kind of appalled when I read that the University will spend $5.5 million to build a parking garage on campus. For some reason, I had thought the University might take a leading role in promoting responsible forms of transportation. Our gluttonous use of petroleum resources is irresponsible and contributes to world instability.

COLUMN: Neighbors who ignore domestic violence pay greater price later

by Casey Jacketta U-Wire Utahns commonly pride themselves on having good family values and a close-knit community. But how good are Utahns' family values when the only families they look out for are their own? Over the long Labor Day weekend, three lives ended abruptly due to domestic violence.

LETTER: Sept. 11 anniversary notes uncertain time

Today marks the beginning of a momentous week for all Americans. Wednesday we will witness the first anniversary of Sept. 11. No words can truly capture the tumultuous feelings the nation has dealt with since the tragedy that hit our soil, demolishing the World Trade Center and striking the Pentagon.

COLUMN: Student regent position opens

by Jennifer Onuska Daily Lobo Columnist Not many people know that one of our fellow students sits on the UNM Board of Regents. In fact, this member is very important because this individual represents all students' needs, undergraduates and graduates alike.

LETTERS: Landowners should vote in conservation election

Editor, Much has been said by the candidates for state and federal office this fall, as the Nov. 5, 2002 general election approaches. However, very few people realize that another special election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and surrounding areas.

COLUMN: Safety comes from effort

by Ashley Wheeland U-Wire What does it mean to be a woman? It means shaving legs. It means talking to friends. It means nights out on the town. Much later for me it will mean weddings and baby showers. Being a woman today also means watching out for your own safety.

COLUMN: Bush hurts democratic values

by Mike Wolff Daily Lobo Columnist The time is coming when our mighty army of God will invade Iraq. Its ultimate leader, George W. Bush, perhaps feels so divinely inspired (and legally able) to do so even without the approval of Congress, and much less of that of the confused American people.

LETTER: University president welcomes all students

Editor, Welcome to the University of New Mexico's 2002-2003 academic year. It is an exciting time in the history of the University of New Mexico, and I am proud to be its 17th president as we enter an era filled with many opportunities for all of us. Our recently developed initiatives in freshman education such as the Freshman Interest Groups, Freshman Learning Communities, Freshman Seminars and Living and Learning Communities are among the many opportunities available to undergraduate students.

LETTER: Political right driven to draw enemy lines

Why, one wonders, are various conservatives and other voices of the political right seemingly driven to drawing up enemy lines? In the late 1940s, they produced blacklists of men and women in Hollywood and the media whom the right charged with being Communists or sympathizers. In 1950, Sen. Joseph McCarthy came up with his famous (but nonexistent) list of 205 names "known to the secretary of state as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping the policy of the State Department."

COLUMN: Sept. 11 changes not for better

Not surprisingly, it is difficult to see much good coming out of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. It is suggested that the attacks "brought America together," but the image of New York police and fireman at ground zero throwing punches at one another a month after the attack might suggest otherwise. If there is any new national unity, it is certainly not the bond of common purpose and sacrifice that characterized World War II, but rather a superficial one of flags and xenophobia. Those of us who are critics of the government or are of Middle Eastern origin have experienced America coming together all right - to attempt to silence or arrest us.

COLUMN: U.S. attorney general threatens civil rights

by Brad Cohen U-Wire John Ashcroft is the worst attorney general President Bush could have selected. Well, maybe that's an overstatement, but he certainly does not seem to possess any of the qualities and virtues necessary to be a good attorney general of the United States.

COLUMN: Music cartel seeks scapegoat

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist Lately a lot of people have been noticing that the pop music produced and mass-marketed by the big five record labels has become insipid, repetitive and not worth the cost. A large part of the problem is the industry's monolithic structure, which has developed over the past decade and is creating a huge barrier to new artists.
