Column: Students' ideas benefit library

During the past two spring semesters a random sample of UNM faculty and students have had the opportunity to participate in a nationally conducted survey regarding the General Library's (GL) collections and services. This is the first of three articles to address specific concerns commented upon by the participants of this year's survey.

Letter: Bush's enthusiasm misleading

Once again, I have to really question the words that come out of our illustrious president's mouth. Last week I heard a news clip from Dubya's economic summit. Bush was quoted as saying he was confident of an economic upswing. His optimism is based on his strong belief in the spirit of our nation's people and the fruits of their labor.

LETTER: U.N. World Summit is last chance for change

Editor, After the events of the past year, and with the ongoing post-Sept. 11 dialogues regarding U.S. foreign policy and our internal state of affairs (patriotism vs. tolerance, security vs. civil liberties, etc.), it seems that discussion of the environment and matters of sustainable growth and development have fallen to the wayside.

LETTER: Phrase 'Under God' in pledge is harmful

Editor, In the Lobo, Stephanie Neubeck wrote, "I, personally, have never heard of a law requiring all American citizens to say the Pledge of Allegiance. In all the schools I have ever attended . . . I have never been forced to say the pledge." Actually, half of the states now require the pledge as part of the school day and half a dozen more recommend it.

COLUMN: Anarchism: do try this at home

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo Columnist By popular demand, I bring you the shortest class you'll have this semester: Anarchism 101, introduction to anarchist thought in 700 words or less. I'll warn you that you shouldn't bother to take this as a definitive course, for two reasons.

LETTER: Ads do not represent UNM in positive light

Editor, I am writing to express my dismay and disappointment at the full-page TD’s Showclub ad in the July 25 to Aug. 11 Daily Lobo. I really thought that as an institution of higher education, UNM would refuse to participate in this type of degradation and objectification of women.

EDITORIAL: Lobo doesn't shelter campus from reality

Yes, I am a woman. I also am a first-generation Hispanic-American. I also am an editor. In that order. My mother is part of a generation of women who stood in picket lines to advocate for equality for women. She grew up with the stigma of being not only a woman, but a Latina in 1960s New York City.

LETTER: PET scanner a boon

Editor, Thank you for reporting on UNM’s recent acquisition of a PET scanner and its unique ability to image metabolic patterns. Our Health Science Center’s current brochure highlighting research lists their Diabetes Center as funded the most. In light of this, it is hoped that they will look for interesting ways in which PET can be applied to diabetes, which is a metabolic disease.

LETTER: Pledge defies Constitution

Editor, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (1st Amendment to the Constitution). This is where separation of church and state is clearly addressed in the Constitution. If it is required that the pledge of allegiance be recited by certain groups in current form then it clearly violates “no law respecting the establishment of religion.

COLUMN: Campus pranks too high tech

by Blackie Sherrod Knight Ridder-Tribune A news bulletin timidly edged into this concentration pattern, which was focused on the fourth race at Louisiana Downs. A faint voice from the periphery told about some college hacking into another college’s Web site, thereby learning some deep, dark secrets.

LETTER: Lobo cartoon is blatantly racist

Editor, I am writing regarding the political cartoon in your July 25 edition of the Daily Lobo. This is on page 4, in your “Opinion” section. I am frankly disgusted and appalled at this cartoon, depicting two Middle Eastern men, one saying to the other “You ever wonder why Israelis strap their bombs to jets instead of people?” while the other man has a bomb strapped to his back.

LETTER: Strip club ads an insult to women and UNM

Editor, Has our school opened a new department for strip clubs such as TD’s and Fantasy World, so that they can advertise on an entire page of the Daily Lobo and welcome us back to school? Is this an attractive way to adorn the cover page of a university newspaper that people look at as a hallmark of what is going on? Are we so down in money and funding Daily Lobos that we are only one step away from the out-loud porn ads? These ads keep the money going, true, but what about the ethics — or is that an old subject and belongs to the past? I believe being supported by the above mentioned clubs and printing their ads consistently in the Daily Lobo is not only an insult to all the women at UNM, but also defies the purpose of a university as an advocate of an educational organization.

LETTER: Readers should rely on own thoughts and ideas

Editor, I, as a woman and a senior - that's as in 62 years old - new to the job force after being retired and a student, agree with you that people should decide for themselves what they shall or shall not wear, eat, think, etc. I love the Daily Lobo. The letters, editorials, ads, classifieds and all.

COLUMN: Tips for parking at the University

by Josh Kavanagh Guest Columnist On behalf of the staff of Parking and Transportation Services, I would like to welcome all new students, faculty, and staff to the University of New Mexico. Parking at a University is a very different experience from parking at any other facility.

LETTER: Full-page ads need discretion

Editor, I agree with others who have written in to let you know that your advertising policy needs to be addressed. The mail-out summer issue has welcome back on the front page and an offensive advertisement on the back. You reserve the right to edit letters to the editor and other content, why not advertisements? You are the gatekeeper for all content.

LETTER: Strip club ads not free speech

Editor, I would like to respond to the silly editorial by Angela Williams defending the running of ads for TD's Showclub and Fantasy World in the Lobo. First of all, this is not a First Amendment issue. Williams seems to think that by allowing TD's and Fantasy World to publish their ads in the Lobo she is courageously defending their right to free speech.

LETTER: Pledge not a violation of freedom of religion

Editor, The Constitution was written to offer freedom to the people as well as protection from hurtful and harmful acts by people with the power to do so, whether elected or not. The Constitution protects free speech - including the expression of the belief or the disbelief in God.

COLUMN: 21st century began Sept. 11

by Robert Batterson Knight Ridder-Tribune Back at the end of the 20th century - in December 1999 (or was that December 2000?) - there was a lot of confusion and debate over when the 21st century actually began; was it Jan. 1, 2000 or Jan. 1, 2001? It was neither.
