Opinion
COLUMN: Oil center of complex, global conflict
April 11George W. Bush wants to put the noose around Saddam Hussein. Ariel Sharon would like to do the honors for Yasser Arafat. Most other leaders in the Middle East would like to kick the chair out from under Bush and Sharon. A man recently told me, "Let 'em all dangle!"
LETTER: SSE works hard to bring events to UNM
April 11I would like to take this opportunity to explain to my fellow students what Student Special Events is and clear up some misconceptions. SSE is an executive agency of ASUNM. We organize events for the entire campus without political, religious or departmental affiliation. Our goal is to bring diverse speakers, cultural events, different types of music and co-sponsor events with student organizations.
LETTER: Palestinians had a chance to end Israeli occupation
April 11I am an Israeli student here at UNM, and I am disturbed by the one-sided perspective and lack of knowledge of the basic facts that some writers - Ms. Lori Rudolph, for example - express regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
EDITORIAL: Students should get out and vote today
April 10If the uproar over ASUNM's $300,000 budget bankrolled by student fees isn't enough to convince students to get out and vote, they should consider the following.
LETTER: A minute can help change UNM
April 10I am writing in regard to a grave affliction that has pervaded this campus for quite some time now and has overstayed its welcome. Figuratively speaking, it is a cancer of sorts, one that delves deep into the essential core of this University and renders the indifference of the student body uncontrollable, proliferative and otherwise rampant.
LETTER: Spring Storm volunteer labor appreciated
April 10I want to take the opportunity to thank Dathan Weems and his organizing staff for the Spring Storm event held Saturday. Even though the event was a first for UNM, it appeared to go very smoothly. I believe it to be a worthwhile event that I hope will continue in upcoming years
LETTER: Casting a ballot is the key to keeping ASUNM accountable
April 10It is once again time for elections to take place at UNM. I hope that every student on campus realizes the importance of the elections and takes time out of their day to vote.
LETTER: Senate funds student groups, pays for ads
April 9On Monday, we were reading the Daily Lobo Opinion page when we came upon the editorial written by Iliana Lim¢n addressing Amendment One. We were dismayed about what was written concerning ASUNM Senate not representing the majority of UNM students.
LETTER: Amendment aids individuals, student organizations equally
April 9I am writing this letter in regards to Amendment One, in which our ASUNM student body government is hoping to add a small change to the funding system. While thinking about this change and the minor effects this will have on students, it occurred to me that the majority of students don't understand what the amendment is, much less the possibilities that this change can provide if approved.
COLUMN: Modest fee increase necessary
April 9It's the time of the year when chalk acronyms blight the sidewalks of UNM urging passing students to vote for some anonymous group of Senate candidates over another equally poorly known slate. Most of the chalking reduces down to a battle of which slate has the wittier initials - the SENERGY group has the edge in my opinion - whatever they stand for, and offers precious little information about any sort of agenda or position. I would conjecture that the single issue the majority of students know about the various slates is their position on whether to distribute candy when they harass people on Election Day.
COLUMN: Principles worth fighting for
April 8While watching the proceedings of Hershe Krammer's trial last Friday, I just kept thinking, "Alexander Berkman."
LETTER: Slate deserves student praise
April 8I was walking around campus this week, and I ran into a member of the Senergy slate. It's refreshing to see a group taking action on their promises rather than simply empty promises.
LETTER: Those who reach students deserve cheers, not jeers
April 8I have read several letters in the Daily Lobo about Professor Cyrino's unique teaching style and manner of dress, and I have one question.
EDITORIAL: Fee hike frisks students
April 8Money - everybody needs it but so few in New Mexico actually have it. Such is the case when it comes to dividing the miniscule pieces of pie that make up UNM's budget. With so little at stake, some faculty, staff and students don't even bother coming to the table anymore because they know it's just a tease.
LETTER: Violence cannot yield peace
April 8Anger, sadness and shame of being an American overwhelmed me when I read Dr. Yaron Brook's letter in the Daily Lobo Tuesday. It was a brutal reminder of how many people here in America still believe that shoving a tank down someone's throat can "force" peace. Wasn't it Albert Einstein who once said, "Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding?"
LETTER: Cook saves students money
April 8There is a student on our campus who has fought to make the lives better - or at least cheaper - for students at UNM.
LETTER: How far must terrorists go to earn readers' condemnation?
April 5This is to all of you - including Richard Berthold - who are unable to declare the actions of the suicide bombers, such as blowing up Israeli teenagers in a disco, unequivocally wrong. You make it difficult for me to hold down my lunch. Please tell me to what level the Palestinians would have to stoop to earn your condemnation?
