LETTER: Cook saves students money
April 8There is a student on our campus who has fought to make the lives better - or at least cheaper - for students at UNM.

Anger, sadness and shame of being an American overwhelmed me when I read Dr. Yaron Brook's letter in the Daily Lobo Tuesday. It was a brutal reminder of how many people here in America still believe that shoving a tank down someone's throat can "force" peace. Wasn't it Albert Einstein who once said, "Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding?"
Money - everybody needs it but so few in New Mexico actually have it. Such is the case when it comes to dividing the miniscule pieces of pie that make up UNM's budget. With so little at stake, some faculty, staff and students don't even bother coming to the table anymore because they know it's just a tease.
I read the Daily Lobo article "Students question forced resignation" on Professor Monica Cyrino, and I must say I found it terribly misleading and outrageous. Your reporter did not take the time to interview more than one graduate student from Foreign Languages and Literature, nor did he take into account those who work directly with Professor Cyrino in the department.
Ariel Sharon is using his declaration of war against terrorism as a ruse for Israel's ongoing brutal occupation of the Palestinian people, now in its 35th year. Under the occupation, millions of Palestinians have been subjected to daily humiliations and a complete and total negation of their rights as a people. One can only wonder what kind of an impact this has on a child's psyche who only knows life under occupation.
This is to all of you - including Richard Berthold - who are unable to declare the actions of the suicide bombers, such as blowing up Israeli teenagers in a disco, unequivocally wrong. You make it difficult for me to hold down my lunch. Please tell me to what level the Palestinians would have to stoop to earn your condemnation?
It is hard to remain true to ourselves when we live with so many inexplicable contradictions. Below is the beginning of an endless list of contradictions that we see, hear, taste and feel daily but are not always conscious of or feel comfortable discussing.
The University libraries are in the process of measuring the effectiveness of service to the UNM community. Monday, April 8, we will be sending out an electronic survey, LIBQUAL+, to a sample of students and faculty. We encourage those of you who receive it to spend 10-15 minutes of your time to help us identify how well you think the libraries meet your expectations of service.
Please, one last word on reparations for slavery and David Horowitz. For the past three years or so, as a researcher, I've followed this controversial and often heated issue. Across the nation, most white Americans are vehemently against reparations of any sort.
"Terrorism" is the new buzzword, replacing the now obsolete "communism" as the stock term used by politicians and other ignorant people to justify the support of repression and sundry dictators. But it is a very slippery word. What exactly is terrorism and who is a terrorist? That is not at all clear, and it is apparently in the political interests of many that it remain so.
As Senators of the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico we would like to express our opinion regarding Amendment 1, which will be on the ballot for the spring 2002 elections.
After reading Kate Siegfried's letter in the Tuesday's Daily Lobo, I was honestly kind of upset because I have been in three of Monica Cyrino's classics classes, and I have enjoyed every one.
The chaos that has erupted in the Middle East during the past few weeks has once again brought world focus onto the divided Israel/Palestine region. Now it seems as though Yasser Arafat's leadership of the Palestinians may be coming to an end, whether through exile or martyrdom. People in the United States and members of the European Union are still calling for peace in the region.
Monica Cyrino is one of the best things that has happened to this University, as well as to me as a student. I had Greek mythology with her last semester, as an optional class, and I totally loved it. Her sense of humor and fun style of teaching inspired me to go to class, and I remember more from her class last semester than I do from any other class I have taken at this University.
Instead of addressing a new topic, this week's column is going to do something that I generally dislike - reflect on my not particularly newsworthy personal situation. For those of you that do not care, I offer my apologies. I would probably just ignore this column myself, and I tend to have little patience with this type of column - sorry Sari Krosinsky.
The Bush administration must end its attempts at appeasement and compromise, and allow Israel to destroy Yasser Arafat and all other Palestinian terrorist groups.
