LETTER: SENERGY wants to bring positive changes to UNM
April 1President Gordon is resigning, tuition is increasing, the new SUB is opening . changes are occurring at UNM. Often undergraduates feel neglected or left out of important decisions that are going on at the University. However, there is a group of students on campus ready to change that.
EDITORIAL: I spent last Wednesday, the first night of Pesach, with my brother's family and friends. It was a quiet seder, with children playing in the background while we retold the story of the exodus from Egypt.
April 1This has been a particularly rough Lenten season and Holy Week for the Catholic Church. The religious leadership has found itself cloaked in a shroud of shame during what should be the height of its popularity during the year.
LETTER: Cyrino is an interesting, professional instructor
April 1I am writing in response to the article about Professor Monica Cyrino. I am appalled that her department would ask her to resign. I took Professor Cyrino's Greek Myth class in the fall of 2000, and hands down that was the most interesting and most anticipated class of my schedule.
COLUMN: Exercise key to a healthy life
April 1What's the primary reason most people use for not exercising? Time restrictions! School, work and family - it all adds up to a full week. Time . we all wish we had more of it. Energy.. "I am too tired at the end of the day to exercise." It may be hard to believe, but exercising actually gives you more energy.
LETTER: Barsamian fills important, overlooked media niches
March 29I was intrigued by Michael Carrasco's comments on David Barsamian's point of view, a viewpoint labeled as "strikingly idiotic" by Mr. Carrasco.
LETTER: Preventing theft is fine, but pedestrians ignored at UNM
March 29Regarding Parking Services' Car Safety Campaign, I think it is just fine UNM wants to inform people how to keep our precious cars safe from thieves. However, what I would like to see is UNM do something to help pedestrians. It's bad enough the entire city is like a war zone for pedestrians but the streets on the UNM campus are just as bad.
LETTER: What Cyrino wears to class not relevant
March 29On March 26, the Daily Lobo published an article about Professor Monica Cyrino. The reporter, Jason Gil Bear, included an evaluation of Professor Cyrino's attire: "Cyrino, wearing a slim-fitting purple shirt with tailored black pants and stiletto heels . joked about wanting to look more like Mariah Carey."
LETTER: Reader missed the point of Berthold's funding column
March 29OK, when I got past all the Christian proselytizing in Cali D. Garcia's letter in the Daily Lobo regarding Berthold's "axe that he grinds," I could understand the point but wonder if Garcia might be missing the point of Berthold's column.
COLUMN: Political labels have lost meaning
March 29People like to reduce our social relations down to who is leftist, or liberal, and who is on the right, or conservative. I wonder what label we have for those poor lonely souls in the center. The use of such labels, from clothing brand names to political orientation, have become an easy way to categorize people but does little to address the real issues and concerns of society.
COLUMN: NAFTA rife with flaws, hypocrisy
March 28Ten years ago, NAFTA negotiators met fierce public opposition. An incredibly broad coalition of unions, environmental and social groups, agriculturalists, opportunistic politicians and religious folk banded together to oppose the free trade agreement that threatened something they valued. That which was valued varied greatly, but all could agree that NAFTA would upset that.
LETTER: GPSA candidate seeks support
March 28Hello, my name is Aaron Kugler, and I am running for GPSA president. I am a first-year law student. I received my bachelor's degree in English and psychology from UNM.
LETTER: Opinions too negative
March 28The other night, I ran into a young lady who studies athletic training at UNM in Johnson Center, where both of us were riding the exercise bikes. She told me she does not even read the Daily Lobo much anymore because she feels that the editorial page has become one series of attacks and snide remarks, with very little positive feedback or praise for anything.
LETTER: Lobo, reader to blame for unfair critique of columnist
March 28I must apologize for yesterday's letter regarding Michael Carrasco's column. Very little of what I wrote was a direct comment on Michael's actual words. I do accept most of the blame for my unjustified attacks, but I believe the Daily Lobo needs to do a much better job of writing the headlines it prints for its editorials.
LETTER: Lobo coverage disappointing
March 28I suppose I should applaud the Daily Lobo for running the gamut of radical fringe political viewpoints. After all, this is a paper that, on the day after the Sept. 11 attacks published a photo of a student writing "USA equals ignorance" on a banner on campus.
COLUMN: Daedalus resurrected from trash
March 28James Miller had a pretty clear idea of what happened to most copies of Daedalus, the highbrow academic journal he recently agreed to edit, once it landed in the hands of its subscribers.
COLUMN: Civil rights are not just for minorities
March 27In Texas, the state where three white men, who were convicted of homicide and sentenced to death by an integrated jury, a black woman, dragged James Byrd to his death was just charged with murder.
LETTER: Next law dean should have been New Mexican
March 27The naming of that Suellyn Scarnecchia as the dean of the law school is just another slap in the face of New Mexicans whose tax dollars help support the University of Mexico.
