Front page of Wednesday's Lobo riddled with mistakes
March 21I realize the students just came back from Spring Break, but can't you do a better job of actually editing and proof reading your copy before it gets printed? The Wednesday edition first page not only has spelling errors (poision), but reports the Fall 2001 enrollment will be affected by the changes in the GPA for the bridge scholarship. I presume you meant the Fall 2002 enrollment.
LETTER: Contraception information available on campus today
March 20Did you know that there is a "back-up" method of birth control that women can get to keep in their medicine cabinet? You may have heard of "emergency contraception" or the "morning after pill." This is a higher dose of daily birth control pills that can be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure to help prevent pregnancy. Widespread knowledge and use of this back-up birth control method could prevent as many as half of the three million unintended pregnancies that occur each in the United States.
COLUMN: AmeriCorps has bad agenda
March 20Some Americans may have been led to believe that expanding the federal AmeriCorps program is just what the country needs after Sept. 11. But, in spite of its patriotic name, AmeriCorps represents the worst, not the best, that Washington has to offer.
LETTER: Columnist praised for correct assessment of multiculturalism
March 20Kudos to Michael Carrasco for a great "tell-it-like-it-is" article on multiculturalism in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. I disagree with him on only one minor point. He implies that the goal of American multiculturalists is no biases. I submit that it is OK, according to American multiculturalists, to be biased against one group.
LETTER: Community should support Spring Storm
March 20On Saturday, April 6, students, faculty and alumni will join for an exciting new service event - The Spring Storm. Created by students, this event is indicative of our commitment as individuals and as a university to make service a recurring part of our lives. Furthermore, The Spring Storm will strengthen UNM by bringing people from all parts of our community together to achieve a common goal.
COLUMN: Exhibit trivializes Holocaust
March 20An ongoing outrage that made headlines for a day and has already disappeared in the continuous shuffle of newsworthy events, the controversial exhibit "Mirroring Evil: Nazi Imagery/Recent Art" at the Jewish Museum in New York is a testament to the sad state of modern art.
COLUMN: Bush right to back service programs
March 20For once, the Bush administration and leading senators from both parties are engaged in the right kind of bidding war.
LETTER: Loss of leaders just adds to increasing UNM costs
March 19So UNM is going to pay probably half a million dollars to make a failed coach go away and more resources will be wasted to replace him in a job that is really not related to the mission of higher education, but one more appropriate to high school cheerleading? And the regents are going to spend thousands more to replace a president who probably sees the mess in the state and wants out. You can't blame him, but remember how much money was quietly given the last president to leave?
LETTER: Additional bike racks would end need to lock to handrails
March 19Ever since I began attending classes at UNM many years ago, there has been the constant debate simmering over the issue of students locking their bikes to hand rails. And every year, the same valid arguments arise. Yes, it is a problem. Yes, it is inconsiderate to the handicapped. No, it isn't really the responsibility of the UNM Physical Plant or campus police to hunt down and remove improperly parked bicycles.
COLUMN: Multiculturalism ignores truth
March 19While browsing The New York Times Web site, I came across a rather interesting sentence imbedded in a piece chronicling the story of a former Russian army officer that is now living in the United States and has been granted asylum. It seems that the defector, Andrei Samorodov, has been giving interviews to several Texas dailies - Texas, his new home, I guess is even today still a step up from Russia - exposing behavior by Russian army units in Chechnya that he categorizes as "war crimes."
LETTER: Fan sounds off against Lobo basketball coach
March 18I am not an avid sports fan and I don't pay a lot of attention to college basketball until the end of the season.
LETTER: NRA article shows truth about guns
March 18I would like to applaud the Daily Lobo on the March 6 article regarding the Kansas City shooting and the National Rifle Association's reaction. I read this publication on a daily basis and I was ecstatic to see an article showing the NRA's point of view. It seems to me that more often than not the Lobo strays from a two-sided argument/opinion.
COLUMN: Students: Hold Bush accountable
March 18During his campaign for President, George W. Bush frequently addressed the importance of expanding access to higher education. In the fall of 2000, he said, "I want to make sure that higher education is affordable and accessible to every American. I am committed to helping families prepare for the cost of higher education."
LETTER: Bell should be embarrassed by her letter
March 18The March 8 letter from Autumn Bell was nothing more than an editorial drive-by-shooting of Ricky Lee Allen. A lack of analysis and critical rebuttal left us with only a thoughtless character assassination.
EDITORIAL: Women basketball team deserves praise, respect
March 18They cry after losses, cheer when they win and play with passion second to none. They are the UNM women's basketball players - the other Lobo hoops team in town and the only one worth cheering for this season.
LETTER: Bell should acknowledge privilege
March 18In response to Autumn Bell's March 8 letter, I am neither affronted nor offended by Professor Allen's words. Why are you?
COLUMN: Ex-cops can't escape conscience
March 14"Chuck, we won, Chuck! You're coming home, pal," the lawyer told Charles Schwarz. "We won!" the lawyer's assistant screamed into the phone to Schwarz's wife when his conviction and those of two other former cops were overturned Feb. 28.
