COLUMN: Report targets university speech

Ever since the horrific acts of Sept. 11, it has been interesting to listen to people, especially young people's views on what is going on. It is quite unique and refreshing when students engage in necessary dialogue that does not simply regurgitate what reporters say or what they hear on shows such as "Hardball," which reduce conversation into an entertainment of whether the guests are ridiculed.

LETTER: Kitchen pests can be controlled

I have received several work orders this semester about little "worms" in kitchen cabinets. These are not worms or maggots; they are the larval stage of either a moth or a beetle, from a group collectively known as stored-product pests.

COLUMN: Somalia skeletons could haunt U.S.

In his State of the Union Address Tuesday, President Bush laid down the future of U.S. foreign policy, its virtue, and its justification: "We've come to know truths that we will never question: Evil is real, and it must be opposed."

Humans must be studied to best fight AIDS

The death of a monkey recently made headlines around the world. He was part of what was originally touted to be a promising vaccine trial for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, carried out by Harvard researchers.

LETTER: Jordan lost his luster by selling overpriced shoes

A couple of weeks ago I discovered that the new Michael "Air" Jordan basketball shoes will cost $200 for those interested in buying them. Two hundred dollars! For a pair of shoes? What the hell is wrong with Mr. Jordan? I can understand why Phil Knight, the CEO of Nike, would sell a pair of sneakers for such an outrageous price, but what I don't understand is why Mike would endorse such an overpricing.

COLUMN: Scandal shouldn't kill deregulation

As the chaotic destruction of Enron continues to drop new fallout on the business and political scene, new questions are arising as to the relationship that should exist between energy companies and the government. The United States isn't the only country to feel the blow of Enron's fall; the United Kingdom's recently deregulated energy market is reeling from the blow amid similar accusations of government collaboration.

LETTER: Lindh should be tried by U.N. international court

It has come to my attention that an American named John Walker Lindh, who had volunteered to serve with the Taliban, will face trial. I would like to state that this trial is totally unfair and that this young man is a victim of political persecution.

COLUMN: It's time to cut ties with Arafatby Michael Carrasco

This weekend news was released that President Bush is considering cutting ties with Yassir Arafat's Palestinian Authority in an effort to punish the terrorist turned corrupt despot for months of terror unleashed on Israel and for the recent interdiction of a ship with a sizable cache of weapons. This action is long in coming and most deserved.

COLUMN: Why not ask for no tuition at all?

While we here in New Mexico ease into the new legislative season, students at Queen's University in Ontario are mired in a tuition fight that's been in progress for several months. With demands to freeze tuition and drop a proposal to deregulate tuition, several dozen of these students occupied an office suite in their administration building from Jan. 15 until Jan. 18.

LETTER: Fraschilla deserves our respect, praise

Like most students, I was shocked to see that Lobo point guard Marlon Parmer had quit the men's basketball team. But I was even more shocked to see the way coach Fran Fraschilla was harshly criticized through the media.

EDITORIAL: Price of self-respect

As much has been made about UNM Professor Richard Berthold, it pales in comparison to the controversy that has rocked the University of South Florida.

LETTER: Decision over pay cut or raise left in staff's hands

In the third week of New Mexico's Legislative session, it is time for UNM staff members to step up to the plate and bring heat to their legislators and the governor. If education employees do not receive a salary raise this session, in view of the projected health insurance, parking fees and cost of living increases, UNM staff will in effect experience a pay cut.
