COLUMN: Sometimes you have to get rude

I am notoriously bad at throwing parties. Whatever time I pick, it always turns out something is going on that's far more exciting than hanging out in my apartment. On the other hand, if I do absolutely nothing, let my refrigerator run empty and my apartment go the way of entropy, somehow, mystically, a party will find its way to my place.

LETTER: Persecuting Berthold for comment unconstitutional

I enrolled in Dr. Berthold's Greek civilization class last year merely because I needed a humanities credit. I had absolutely no interest in history, let alone Greek history. As it would turn out, I found myself listening attentively to his every lecture and left the class with a better understanding of society.

LETTER: Anti-abortion ad `misinformation'

As an obstetrician-gynecologist and a family practice physician on faculty at UNM, as educators and as strong supporters of reproductive rights, we were profoundly discouraged to see the eight-page anti-abortion advertising supplement in the Oct. 18 edition of the Daily Lobo.

EDITORIAL: Censorship won't combat ignorance

Before Sept. 11, many in this country would be hard-pressed to find Afghanistan on a map. Despite horrifying news accounts, few knew much about the Taliban regime and how it treated the Afghan people - especially women.

COLUMN: Fight terrorism without killing

The amazing writer and thinker, Eduardo Galeano, recently said, "in a struggle of good against evil, it's always the people who get killed." For centuries now, wars have wrecked incredible misery across the face of this earth and have sent shock waves throughout countless generations.

LETTER: Berthold's apology should be enough

I've stumbled on Professor Berthold's latest folderol. He hasn't changed since I graduated in 1984. He is quite correct that he can be callous and insensitive, but he also can be insightful and compassionate about issues.

LETTER: Firing an inspiring professor a mistake

As an education major at UNM in the late 1980s, I went into Richard Berthold's 100-level history class knowing that the professor had a big mouth. Being a white male with libertarian tendencies, I thought that I would be somewhat immune to his barbs.

LETTER: Spring storm a call to action

Our community, like our country, is uniting to support those who continue to suffer from the terror of Sept. 11. Gloriously, flags are flying and people are giving of themselves to show how truly great our country can be in the face of adversity.

LETTER: Atheism not related to politics

In Internet-speak, there is a term for someone who tries to plant the seed of a flamewar simply for the satisfaction of getting the masses all riled up: a "troll." Mariano Grinbank is clearly a troll. His letter on "atheist-evolution" is written with so much bile and fanaticism that its desire to incite a Daily Lobo flamewar couldn't be more apparent.

COLUMN: Best defense is a good offense

Recently, the news has been reporting on the American "smart" weapons that have killed and injured civilians in Afghanistan. As the American-led strikes continue, it is inevitable that more mistakes like these will be made.
