In the wake of Tuesday's atrocities, I want to enter a plea for cool heads and clear minds.
On behalf of the Muslim Student Association, I write this to say that the campus Muslim community condemns in the strongest of terms the terrorist attacks made upon the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Perhaps the only good thing that could result from Tuesday's mass murder in New York and Washington, D.C., is the uncommon dialogue that is taking place among students as they discuss the bombing and what should be done about it. Such discussion is regrettably rare on our campus and should be encouraged whenever and wherever it takes place.
Tuesday, the UNM community was bound together in shock and sadness as the horrible events of the day unfolded. As we all begin a new day, I would hope that this sense of community endures and that we come together in support of each other as each of us tries to understand and cope with these tragic events.
Shock, disbelief, uncertainty, anger and dismay only begin to describe the emotions that took over Tuesday as we learned more about the terrorist attacks that gripped the nation’s capital, New York and Pennsylvania.
"From the ABC building here in New York we can see the World Trade Center. the towers are visible from all over the island. but they're not there anymore." These words penetrated my half-conscious mind Tuesday morning as the radio came on to wake me for class.
Awake to the brutal reality that surrounds us, in contemplation of what will follow, I would like to suggest that now is a time for reflection - a time to assess great loss and address our turmoil.
Retired sociology professor Richard Tomasson died of leukemia last Thursday at the age of 73.
The letters “NIMBY” are sadly all too familiar to heads of faith based ministries nationwide that exist to help America’s homeless, hungry and otherwise destitute. They stand for “not in my back yard.”
Editor, Shlomo Karni's letter in the Sept. 7th issue of the Daily Lobo begins with, "Let us set aside, for the moment, all the polemics and concentrate on facts." He then proceeds to give a "history" long discredited, even by Israeli historians, although some schools in Israel are beginning again to teach nationalistic myth as fact. Israel's early leaders, including David Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin, made it clear that the partition of Palestine was unacceptable and that every scrap of "Eretz Yisrael" must be Jewish - all the way to the Euphrates.
It's great when fans passionately follow sports teams, but sometimes they just go too far.
Editor, As a frequent contributor to this opinion page, my favorite target has been Gary Johnson. When Johnson leaves office, I want every New Mexican to remember the antics, failures, dissension and havoc this governor created and then never elect another "non-politician." It takes more than a slogan like "People Before Politics" to be an effective public servant.
We are now in the Hebrew month of Elul, the time of preparation for Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the New Year, and Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. Some people think these holy days are an excuse for self-flagellation. But that's really not quite right.
Editor, In anticipation to the upcoming conference on "Nationalism and Imperialism" sponsored by ECDN, a local student group of Chicano nationalists, on Sept. 15, I feel compelled to state that at long last Chicano nationalism is being placed on the same level of legitimacy as the other three nations in representation at the conference; namely, Palestine, Ireland, and Quebec.
Editor, Comcast Cable is abusing its customers and our local educators again. Not only have cable rates risen three times the rate of inflation since deregulation, which represents price gouging just as the oil companies are doing with the captive driver markets, but Comcast fills the affordable basic channels with irrelevant shopping and religious programming.
During the summer, the University announced the retirement of Robert "Sideshow Bob" Migneault, dean of the General Library at UNM. This announcement was accompanied by glowing appraisals of the man and his accomplishments from Public Affairs, the Campus News and Provost Brian Foster.
In my 91 years I have seen two world wars and the deaths of as many as a hundred million people in the struggle between the forces of free democracy and the powers of oppression.
Let us set aside, for the moment, all the polemics and concentrate on facts:
Like the college-bound high school seniors it seeks to serve, U.S. News and World Report's America's Best Colleges turns 18 this season. This guide, and a score of others, are the vehicles of choice for millions of high school students who'll start their college searches this fall.
