Pro wrestling is undeniably awesome
Graham Gentz | July 13At my age, out of the blue, I’ve developed a completely new interest: one without irony and with utter devotion. I love professional wrestling.

Editor, I was horrified to read Graham Gentz’s review of the play “Painting Churches,” which appeared in the June 30 – July 6, 2014 Lobo. The reader is stricken with the terrible dilemma of deciding which is more offensive: the poor quality of Gentz’s writing or his racist and misogynistic remarks. In describing a leading character: “She has some redeeming moments when she turns the bitch level up to 11 …”
I went to the Albuquerque Comic Expo recently, and I was utterly dismayed by what I saw. I was introduced to the worlds of “The Fantastic Four” and “the Avengers” when I was only a tiny child, moving with my family from state to state every few years. My father, as a young boy in the ‘60s, read the genesis of Spider-Man, Thor and Daredevil. So when he had boys of his own, he would take my older brother and I to comic book shops no matter where we lived to buy what few comics we could scrounge from bargain bins selling them three for a dollar.
“Painting Churches” as presented by The Adobe Theater is an abysmal experience once the paint has been stripped from its facade. It’s difficult to know where to start. I suppose the best place is with the abhorrent characters and their petty lives.
Editor, Several days ago, three Israeli teenagers were abducted from the occupied Palestinian West Bank, probably by a Hamas outfit.
It takes an entire year for the Equilibrium Theater Company and Buen Viaje Dance Company to prepare their show, so you’d figure it ought to be good. You’d be right. The show this year is called “North Fourth Night Live! and BVD Does Broadway.” It runs about an hour, the first half with Equilibrium doing a series of skits, and the second half with Buen Viaje’s dance pieces.
While summer is the season for grilling, it is also important to eat your veggies. Summer greens are exploding in gardens. They are cheap and plentiful in farmers markets and grocery stores. These versatile vegetables are a great complement to any meal and, with just slight modifications in seasoning, can go with any cuisine.
Editor, The freshman experience is usually shared amongst a majority of high school graduates as they come together in the fall. A select few are forced to enter into the Early Start Program during the summer to complete six credit hours prior to the fall semester.
Editor, I am writing as a colleague of Dr. David Correia, the UNM Professor whose job at UNM is being unnecessarily threatened due to his involvement in peaceful activism. Of course, like Dr. Correia, I do not speak on behalf of the University of New Mexico.
Editor, Regarding the governor candidates’ positions on the minimum wage, I just read today that Seattle plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 over several years. Anyone looking for employment in New Mexico and many other states knows that the prevailing wage is $8 – $18.
Editor, The other day, on our way home from Red River, my family passed an open-pit mine. The three young girls in my car — aged 7, 8 and 4 — were genuinely horrified by the destruction. Why are they allowed to do that, they wondered. A conversation about democracy, protest and politics followed.
Dungeons and Dragons. You’ve probably heard that name before. But what is it? Could you describe it? More than likely, you summon the stock image of fat, sweaty ‘neckbeards’ sitting in a basement together. But what are they actually doing down there? There are a few names for it.
Now that summer has come, it’s time to start some serious grilling. Grilling is at once the most primitive and one of the most delicious ways to prepare food.
Editor, For the first time in 35 years UNM hasn’t had an increase in tuition or fees, and we are grateful to work with Regents who actively listen to students and are responsive to the realities of New Mexican families.
Editor, I was very disappointed to learn that President Frank failed to honor an agreement that he made with the ASUNM and GPSA presidents and removed over $5 million of student fees from the purview of the Student Fee Review Board without their knowledge. I think it shows a tremendous amount of disrespect ...

Editor, I want to thank UNM professor David Correia for being out on the front lines of social progress for us in the community. As an alumnus of UNM, it makes me proud to see one of my fellow faculty leading the movement for justice.
Editor, At great risk of losing popularity, and in response to your May 7 front page article entitled “ASUNM parking summit gives drivers a voice,” let me suggest that rather than adding more parking spaces at UNM, we need fewer.
Editor, The job of the University President is to guide and represent the University and look out for its well-being in a financially, academically and socially conscious way. Sometimes I have to make unpopular decisions.
