Scholar-Athletes On Tuesday the Mountain West Conference announced that a record 651 student-athletes were named Scholar-Athletes. Of those 651 student-athletes, UNM had 117 Scholar-Athletes — 25 more than the next-most institution.
In the midst of summer, current and former UNM soccer players could be found spending time together out in the Sol. The Albuquerque Sol, that is. Five Lobo players and four former players spent their summer playing for Albuquerque’s newest team, the Albuquerque Sol FC. The Sol is part of the USL Premier Development League, the top-level men’s amateur soccer competition in the country.
On Tuesday, New Mexico and the Mountain West Conference announced that the Lobos’ Aug. 30 season and home opener against UTEP will be broadcasted by the Mountain West Network at 6 p.m. It will be broadcasted exclusively on the MWN and CampusInsiders.com. UNM’s game against UTEP is one of seven that will be shown on both sites.
UNM will host its 21st annual New Mexico Women’s Football Clinic on July 24th at Branch Field. The clinic gives women a first-hand look at how the Lobo football program operates. Attendees will also get to meet with head coach Bob Davie and his coaching staff.
A New Mexico Highlands spokesman confirmed Thursday afternoon UNM assistant coach Craig Snow has been officially offered and accepted NMHU’s head basketball coaching position. Snow will replace Joe Harge at the helm of the Division II Cowboys, a Rocky Mountain Athletic Association team that went 11-15 last season.
Head coach Craig Neal officially announced the addition of Samford transfer Tim Williams on Thursday. Williams, a 6-foot-8 forward, spent the last two seasons with the Bulldogs. He was the 2012-13 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 14.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. He also earned a spot on the All-Southern Conference Third Team. In his sophomore season, Williams earned a First Team All-Southern Conference nomination. He averaged 17.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.

Three former New Mexico men’s basketball players are about to discover the next phase in their playing careers. Ex-Lobos Cameron Bairstow, Alex Kirk and Kendall Williams are available in this year’s NBA draft, scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT Thursday in Brooklyn, New York.
Ray Birmingham always wanted this opportunity. The New Mexico head coach showed his joy with Alex Bregman, an Albuquerque native and a star infielder for LSU, by his side at The Pit on Thursday. Both will spend more time together over the next several weeks as part of team USA.
Football Senior offensive lineman LaMar Bratton, junior quarterback Cole Gautsche and sophomore linebacker Dakota Cox will be captains of the New Mexico football team for the 2014 season, the team announced Thursday. Bratton, a fifth-year senior, started in all 37 games for the Lobos in the last three seasons and earned all-Mountain West honorable mention awards in 2012 and 2013. In 21 career appearances, Gautsche amassed five 100-yard rushing games and more than 1,500 passing yards in two years in the Lobos’ triple option attack. Cox became the first Lobo freshman in 20 years to lead the team in tackles.
For Alan Dils, the pieces came together and the time felt right. The longtime New Mexico men’s tennis coach has decided to call it a career. Dils will step aside from the program after 18 years as head coach and retire beginning June 30.

From player to coach, Amy Beggin has climbed through the ranks of the New Mexico women’s basketball program by taking advantage of opportunities. Beggin’s next break will be as assistant head coach, after her promotion from director of operations last Tuesday. She takes over for former Assistant Coach Edwina Brown, who stepped down last month.
At times this season, the New Mexico baseball team had the poise and mental fortitude of a former league champion. In other instances, though, UNM displayed the immaturity and mental lapses of a young team trying to hold its place atop the Mountain West, leading to an uneven season for the Lobos.
Men’s Basketball Head Coach Craig Neal completed the recruitment process for the 2014 class with the addition of Elijah Brown, a transfer from Butler, the team announced last Tuesday. Brown, a 6-foot-4 guard from Los Angeles, saw action in 30 games and averaged 6.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

The New Mexico baseball team was ousted from the Mountain West tournament losing to Nevada 9-4 in 11 innings on Friday. With the game tied at 3-3, Wolf Pack junior shortstop Kyle Hunt hit an RBI single into right field for the go ahead run and a 4-3 lead.
The New Mexico baseball team finished atop the regular season standings for the third year in a row, but unlike the previous seasons, the Lobos won’t be the No. 1 seed at the Mountain West tournament. That distinction belongs to the host team UNLV, who tied UNM for first place in the MW thus becoming co-champions.
