Last season, the UNM baseball team seemed set to make its first run to the College World Series. After a second consecutive Mountain West regular season title and an overall record of 37-22, the Lobos were in contention to host an NCAA Regional.
The New Mexico men’s basketball rebuilding effort will require one more component for the upcoming 2014-15 season. The Lobos granted sophomore guard Cleveland “Pancake” Thomas a release from his scholarship, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
Series wins have been scarce for New Mexico’s softball team this season. Another loss in the rubber match against Colorado State (29-11, 10-5 MW) on Wednesday night has provided six conference series losses in a row.

New Mexico completed a three-game sweep over San Jose State following an 11-6 win over the Spartans Saturday in San Jose. The Lobos (30-11-1, 14-4 MW) also won two games Friday 14-2 and 5-2. The teams played a double-header on Friday after Thursday’s game was postponed because of poor playing surface conditions.
The New Mexico softball team is still in search of winning a series in conference play. Despite having won the opening game of the past three series, UNM has been unable to obtain more than one win against a conference opponent.
Chalk up one more victory for the defense … technically. On Saturday the New Mexico football team held a live scrimmage for the second week in a row, and once again the defense stifled the Lobos’ offense for a majority of the hour-long match.
The prior two years of spring ball, the New Mexico football team shied away from players tackling. UNM had a bare thin roster thanks to a low retention rate and NCAA sanctions that resulted in a loss of five scholarships over three years.
Accolades continue to rain down upon members of the New Mexico volleyball team. Outside hitters Cassie House and Julia Warren will be traveling to Europe after making the Mountain West All-Star team, accompanied by assistant coach JJ Glavan.
For the second straight year, UNM volleyball head coach Jeff Nelson is sending a pair of Lobos to the U.S. Collegiate National Team. “There aren’t very many schools that have multiple kids on,” Nelson said. “It’s pretty awesome to have a couple kids make it and have that experience.”
With an increase of contact drills comes an increase of potential injuries. That potential became reality during the New Mexico football team’s scrimmage Saturday.

New Mexico center Alex Kirk has made his decision: he will forgo his senior season and declare for the NBA Draft. The Lobos men’s basketball Twitter account, @UNMHoops, announced the decision Friday afternoon after reports surfaced Kirk was leaving.
Experience is not going to be a factor during the final stretch for the New Mexico softball team. “At this point in the season we consider them all veterans,” head coach Erica Beach said. “We don’t put too much emphasis on how old whoever’s on the field.”
This week is the closest the Mountain West baseball season will get to a halfway point. Every team has played 15 of their 30 conference games except New Mexico, which has only played 12 of its 30 MW contests to date.
If there was one consistent offensive option for the New Mexico football team for the past two seasons, it was running back Kasey Carrier. The last two years, Carrier rushed for 2,591 yards, scored 25 touchdowns and set the UNM and conference single-season rushing record in 2012 with 1,469 yards.
The New Mexico men’s basketball team may make the most headlines around town. The Lobo men’s soccer team may have some sustained success for more than a decade. But there’s another program at UNM that has also built a successful legacy on a national stage.
