Cross country: Lobos on the national stage

The University of New Mexico men’s cross country team finished third at the Mountain Region Championships on Nov. 10 to qualify for the NCAA Championship. The women’s team finished seventh. In his first collegiate 10K, Habtom Samuel won the Mountain Region individual championship with a time of 28:57.6. Samuel, along with Evans Kiplagat and Lukas Kiprop, all finished within the top four to receive All-Region honors. “We’re fearless. We’ve got … seven incredible athletes. They’re all running really well but three will look to be All-Americans,” Darren Gauson said — UNM’s head coach.

Men’s basketball: A nail-biting win in New Mexico

The men’s basketball team defeated University of Texas at Arlington 82-80 on Thursday, Nov. 16. The Lobos beat the Mavericks at home with a Donovan Dent buzzer-beater to go to 2-1 on the season. UT Arlington now stands at 2-1. Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored 29 total points, shooting 9-23 from the field. He found himself at the charity stripe often with 13 attempts and nine makes. He shot half of the Lobos’ total free throws. Along with a layup buzzer-beater, Dent had a career-high 25 points along with five assists, two steals and a block.

Football: Mistakes were made

The Lobos lost to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels 56-14 on Saturday, Nov. 4. University of New Mexico fell to a 3-6 record; the team will have to win their final three games to remain bowl eligible. On special teams, the Lobos gave up a combined 206 yards on punt and kick returns – leading to excellent field position for UNLV's offense on a majority of their drives. Head Coach Danny Gonzales said that is what cost them the game.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos win 65-55 at home

The women’s basketball team beat the Tarleton State Texans 64-55 on Sunday, Nov. 12. It was their third game of the season and they remain undefeated with a 3-0 record. The Texans fell to a 1-2 record. University of New Mexico led for 39:21 and survived a disastrous fourth quarter where they saw a 20-point lead shrink to eight, however they executed late to protect the lead and earn the win.

Volleyball: Lobos fall in four to Fresno but win senior day against Nevada

The Fresno State Bulldogs beat the Lobos 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20) at home on Thursday, Nov. 9. Going into the game, the Lobos, the Bulldogs and the Colorado State Rams were in a three-way tie for second place in the Mountain West Conference. This was University of New Mexicou2019s second loss against the Bulldogs this season. The Lobos are now 10-6 in conference and 18-9, and are currently tied for second place in the conference. With two games left in the season, the Lobos need to win one to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.

Men’s basketball: Lobos split games in opening week

The Lobos had their first game of the season at home at The Pit against the Southern Texas Tigers and took home a dominant win on Monday, Nov. 6. The game started off evenly, but was quickly taken over for a 92-55 win. Then on Nov. 9, the Lobos lost to 72-58 against #23 ranked St. Maryu2019s. The Lobos were without their star guard Jaelen House for the game due to injury. In the first game of the season, the Lobos had four players in double-digit scoring with a very balanced offense.

Danny Granger and Matthieu Amgwerd among athletes inducted into UNM's Hall of Honor

The 2023 Hall of Honor inductees include a star-studded list of athletes who have played for University of New Mexico. Small forward and NBA veteran Danny Granger and tennis player Matthieu Amgwerd are a few of the names included on that list.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos take the second exhibition match

The Lobos men's basketball team won their second exhibition match against the New Mexico Highland Cowboys and took home a hard fought victory. Off of the success from the game against Colorado State University Pueblo, the team went into the match hoping to continue to work out the kinks, and they did just that. #2 Donovan Dent and #5 Jamal Mashburn Jr. were in the starting lineup and both players would stay on the court for almost the entire game. Mashburn led the team in scoring with 25 but Dent wasn’t that far behind with 23. They combined for 13-16 from the free throw line.

Cross country: Takes conference

The University of New Mexico’s men’s cross country team took the Mountain West Championship title on Oct. 27 while in Boise. The women’s team took fourth in the MW Championship race. Habtom Samuel along with Evans Kiplagat and Lukas Kiprop all finished in 1-2-3 order crossing the line within 30 seconds of each other. This is the first time that the men’s team has won the conference title since 2014.

Women's basketball: Lobos win exhibition game against Adams State

The women's basketball team won their second and final exhibition game 60-45 against the Adams State Grizzlies on Oct. 29. The Lobos took control in the fourth quarter for a win, despite mistakes made throughout the game. The team shot 38.3% from the field, 28% from the three-point line and went 7-14 on free throws. They also gave up 21 turnovers in the game. On offense, they had three players in double digit scoring. Vianè Cumber led the team with 16 points. Aniyah Augmon scored 10 points and earned four rebounds, two assists and two steals but had five turnovers. Nyah Wilson showed out in the second half, scoring all 11 of her points. After the game, Wilson said that the Grizzlies' physicality was good for them because they will learn how to adjust to bad starts in the future.

OPINION: 2023 men’s basketball conference predictions

Last season, the Lobos were 8-10 in conference play and 22-12 overall. In the Mountain West Preseason Poll, the Lobos were selected to finish third this season. Under Head Coach Richard Pitino and assistant coaches, the University of New Mexico looks promising for the upcoming season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos first exhibition match shows the strong new-blood

The men’s basketball team won their first exhibition match 83-65 this past Thursday against the Colorado State University Pueblo Thunderwolves. The Lobos recently brought on seven new players, including one who only arrived in the country two days prior, and fans got to see the potential of the team. The Lobos won the tip off with new player Nelly Junior Joseph getting the ball. Joseph was one of three new players in the starting line up for the Lobos, alongside Mustapha Amzil and Jemarl Baker Jr. The first half was rough for the Lobos.

Lobos end conference losing streak during homecoming game

At the Homecoming game, University of New Mexico defeats the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 35-14. The Lobos end their 14 game losing streak in conference play and earn their first conference win at home since 2017. The Lobos also improved to a 3-4 record and are 1-2 in conference play. The team played a complete game – showing out on offense, defense and special teams.

Lobo men’s basketball has seven new faces ready to play

The University of New Mexico has added seven new players to the men’s basketball roster this year, alongside a contract extension to men’s basketball Head Coach Richard Pitino until the 2027-28 season. Pitino has helped the Lobos achieve a 20-win season last year – the best since 2014 – and a postseason appearance. Last year, the Lobos finished with a 8-10 record within the Mountain West conference, making it two games in the MW Tournament before losing to Utah State. UNM has signed three guards, three forwards and one center. This leaves half of the roster remaining from last season.

OPINION: Upcoming women’s basketball season preview

Last season, the Lobo women’s basketball team finished with a record of 21-13. In Mike Bradbury’s seventh season as Head Coach, it was a slight drop off compared to the 2021-2022 season. Despite that, Bradbury was offered a five-year $275,000 contract extension this past May, keeping him in charge through 2028. Last year, the Lobo’s production was unbelievable, scoring 75.7 points per game – the second most in the conference. Along with that, they were efficient — scoring a top thee field goal, three point and free throw percentage in the conference. A majority of last season’s offense came from University of New Mexico’s four senior starters — Amaya Brown, LaTascya Duff, LaTora Duff and Shaiquel McGruder. Together they combined for 46.5 points per game and were key players in all components of the Lobo’s system.

Football: Lobos slip up in second half against Spartans

The University of New Mexico Lobos lost 52-24 at home against the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 14. A disappointing second half led to a 28 point loss for the Lobos, earning them their 14th conference loss in a row. The Lobos are now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Early in the game, the Lobos began to switch between senior quarterback Dylan Hopkins and freshman Devon Dampier. Dampier went in for the first time midway through the first quarter and continued to play periodically throughout the game.

United goes to playoffs after a decisive win

New Mexico United played their final game of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 13 against Memphis 901. New Mexico took the match with a dominant scoring of 4-1, and with that final score, United will be attending the 2023 United Soccer League Championship playoffs. United came into the match off the back of a 2-1 win over Phoenix Football Club but still only had a seven percent chance to make it to the playoffs. They proved this statistic wrong. The match started strong for United with the first goal in the third minute by Harry Swartz. From there, the boys in black and gold kept up on the offensive, even on defense. United’s goalie – Andrew Thomas – was scrappy.

Opinion: 2023 men's basketball non-conference predictions

Richard Pitino’s second year as Head Coach at the University of New Mexico proved to be a success. The Lobos were 14-1 in non-conference play and 22-12 overall – a major improvement from the 2021-22 season. Although the Lobos fell behind in conference play last year, they dominated in non-conference and are on track to do so again this season.

Softball: Lobos show out during Fall Ball

The University of New Mexico's softball team played a double header against the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls on Oct. 7. No official box score was released so stats were kept by hand for game one by the Daily Lobo. In game one, the Lobos defeated the Cowgirls 12-1. UNM's offense exploded for runs in multiple innings. They earned 14 hits and seven walks. Head Coach Nicole Dickson shared what she strives for in the team during Fall Ball and how it can be used to integrate newcomers.

Isotopes moving onto bigger things and big leagues

Seven players from the Isotopes have made their Major League Baseball debut this year and have been called up for a current active roster position on the Colorado Rockies. The list includes former Isotopes players, Evan Justice, Karl Kauffmann, Riley Pint, Victor Vodnik, Julio Carreras, Hunter Goodman and Brenton Doyle. Justice, Kauffmann, Pint and Vodnick are all rookie pitchers for the Rockies. Carreras plays third base, Goodman plays first and Doyle is a center fielder.
