No. 11 Colorado wins first NCAA tournament game in 15 years

UNLV was close to a come back, but the 20 point lead it spotted Colorado was too much to overcome. No.11 Colorado won its first NCAA Tournament game in 15 years when it upset No.5 UNLV 68-64 Thursday night at The Pit. The Buffaloes had a 20 point lead with 15:05 remaining, but UNLV went on a 22-4 run to cut the lead to two with 3:51 remaining but CU held on to win. CU was spurred on by a 16-5 run to open the contest and was never behind in the game. “We did just enough,” Colorado head coach Tad Boyle said.

Baylor snatches victory from Jackrabbits

No. 14 seed South Dakota State threw its hardest punch at third-seeded Baylor Thursday night at the Pit — unfortunately for the Jackrabbits it’s the only one that landed. South Dakota State led 19-7 after Nate Wolter hit a jumper with 13:23 left in the half. But the Bears’ speed, size and athleticism was too much as they took over and controlled the rest of the game beating the Jackrabbits 68-60 Thursday night at the Pit. “They came out there swinging, knocking down open shots, knocking down contested threes,” Bears’ guard Pierre Jackson said.

Men's basketball defense locks up victory against Long Beach

Down 61-59 with 4:43 left in the game, sophomore guard Kendall Williams launched the most important three-pointer of his short career — it hit the back of the rim and bounced in. Vanderbilt beats Harvard 79-70

No.5 Vanderbilt comfortably beat No.12 Harvard 79-70 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the Pit thanks to 27 points from John Jenkins. Vanderbilt had an 18-point lead in the second half with 8:32 left but Harvard chipped away at the deficit to 71-65 with 1:01 remaining but the Commandeers made their free-throws down the stretch to take the game. Vanderbilt’s had lost three straight NCAA tournament games to lower seeds and head coach Kevin Stallings said the win was an important step forward for the program.

Badgers smack down Grizzlies in 73-49 game

New Mexico has been a part of Montana’s last two NCAA tournament appearances — and both have ended badly. Two years ago, the Montana Grizzlies’ tourney run ended in the their first game, against the Lobos; this year it ended at New Mexico’s home court.

Women's basketball falls to SDSU in MWC title

The women’s basketball MWC run is over. UNM’s fairy tale run in the MWC tournament came to an end Saturday in the final against San Diego State, 57-43. The Lobos were the seven seed but pulled off upset wins over University of Las-Vegas and Boise State to reach the championship game, but one seeded SDSU was just too good. “It was a tough loss,” senior forward Porche Torrance said.

Lobos to face Air Force in Vegas

The men’s basketball team is likely guaranteed to go dancing in the NCAA tournament next week, but there’s still more work to do. The Lobos head to Las Vegas, Nev. today to take on Air Force in the first round of the MWC tournament.
