Cross country forecast looks good

Staff Report The Lobo men's cross country team was picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference - the highest preseason ranking ever for UNM. New Mexico received one first-place vote and 19 total points to tie defending MWC champ Air Force for No.

Matt Young has never been a Braves fan, but it's a safe bet he is now. It was announced earlier this week that the Lobo centerfielder will forgo his senior season at UNM and sign a professional contract with Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves organization.

Moore's name added to notable list

DonTrell Moore was named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation "players to watch" list. The country's fourth-oldest individual college football award, the Walter Camp Award is given to the foundation's choice as Player of the Year. Moore, who has twice been named a unanimous first team all-Mountain West Conference honoree, was the only MWC player selected for the list.

Coach's grit promises good season for soccer

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Only 27 teams in the nation are ranked ahead of the Lobo men's soccer team, and head coach Jeremy Fishbein said he is ready to live up to expectations. The team is used to high expectations after last year's preseason national ranking.

Lobo scrimmage thrills fans

Football fans got their first look at this season's Lobo team during Saturday night's Fan Photo Day. Lobo devotees were treated to two hours of practice and scrimmage and an autograph session with the players. "This is a good event for the players and fans," media director Greg Remington said.

Lobo center fielder wins outstanding player title

Staff Report UNM center fielder Matt Young was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2004 Texas Collegiate League championship series after leading the Coppell Copperheads to the league title. A Lobo senior this year, Young went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the deciding game of the championship series, where the Copperheads beat the Graham Roughnecks.

Shadrack Kiptoo is the New Mexico state champion in the high school boys 800-meter run, 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run. In fact, he has never lost a race in the Land of Enchantment. Men's soccer team scores top rankings

With the 15th-ranked recruiting class and the 28th-ranked overall team in the country, Lobo men's soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein is ready to improve on what he said was a disappointing 2003 campaign. "The (national) ranking is nice, but last year we were ranked 17th and had a poor season," Fishbein said.

Former Lobo continues basketball career as coach

Staff Report Former UNM point guard Senque Carey took a job with the coaching staff at Portland State University for the 2004-05 season. Carey worked last year as an undergraduate assistant coach with the UNM men's basketball team. Affectionately referred to as "Q" by Lobo fans, Carey came to UNM after transferring from the University of Washington.

Downs leads U.S. golf to title

Staff Report UNM's Kailin Downs won two out of three matches in Ichihara, Japan this week to help Team USA defeat Japan in the 2004 Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship. Playing on the other side of the world did not make a difference to Downs in the three-day tournament, as she took the first match from Japan's Chika Yamamoto 74-77.
