Athletes of the week

Ashley Perkins Junior Softball Perkins pitched her fourth shutout of the season Sunday against the University of Texas- El Paso, allowing only two hits, one walk and striking out 10 of 24 batters. Perkins has shut out the opponent in four of her last five appearances on the mound.

Lobo baseball team heads for tough weekend

This weekend could prove grueling for the Lobos (0-2-1) as they head to the Domino's Pizza Aggie Classic at Texas A&M. Over the next three days, UNM will play six games, three against the No. 20 Aggies (7-0), and three against undefeated Arkansas (6-0). How does head coach Rich Alday feel about this early-season epic? "Not good," he said.

Diving team's core gets top MWC honors

Lobos look to devour Aztecs

Finger pointing, frustration and confusion have left the UNM men's basketball season teetering on the edge. Just two weeks ago, the Lobos were alone in fourth place in the conference with a .500 record at 4-4. But after a back-breaking road swing over the past two weeks that saw UNM drop three straight to Air Force, BYU and Utah - the latter two losses by a combined 47 points - the Lobos were left questioning themselves as a team and a contender.

Levin wins Burns tourney

Spencer Levin is proving to be the saving grace for UNM men's golf, leading the team to respectable finishes in the first two tournaments of the semester. The 19-year-old sophomore is quickly making a name for himself at UNM after a series of publicized problems on and off the course led to his decision to transfer this year from UCLA.

Not quite a fiesta

In a game that ended as a taut, tense matchup, the Lobos tied the Northwestern Wildcats 3-3 after 11 innings in the finale of this weekend's Ultimate Dugout Baseball Fiesta Tournament. Baseball games aren't supposed to end in a draw, but it was a suitable ending for such a bizarre contest.

Men's Basketball The Lobos (13-10, 4-6) dropped their 24-straight road game Saturday in Provo, Utah against BYU (17-7, 7-4). The Cougars dominated play in the paint en route to an 88-71 Mountain West Conference win. Troy DeVries led the Lobos with 16 points, and Javin Tindall added 12.

Athletes of the week

Spencer Levin Sophomore Golf Levin has made a huge impact on the men's golf team in his first two meets at UNM and led the men to a third-place finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate this weekend in Hawaii. Levin finished 15-under par and placed first individually, with scores of 67-65-69.

Lobos steal win at The Pit

It was yet another last-second thriller Saturday night at The Pit, as the Lobos edged out the Brigham Young Cougars 60-59. The score was tied on 10 occasions, and there were 10 lead changes throughout the course of one of the year's most physical games.

New talent starting up baseball seasonby Phil Parker

The Lobos open the 2004 season this weekend with games against Kent State, No. 23 Nebraska and Northwestern University in the Ultimate Dugout Baseball Fiesta Tournament at Isotopes Park. With the new season comes an influx of new talent, and these first few games will showcase two new starting pitchers who hope to kick off the '04 campaign with their first wins as Lobos.

Arndt makes a comeback

For one half, it looked like a re-energized Lindsey Arndt would make all the difference against the 25th-ranked Utah Utes. Then, as should have been expected, Utah clawed back behind Mountain West Conference star Kim Smith and the Lobos had to draw on every ounce of team effort to stave off a comeback from the league-leading Utes.

Lobos get second shot at Utes

The No. 25 Utah Utes will invade The Pit Saturday, looking to extend their nine-game winning streak. But the Lobos will do everything they can to end it in what is expected to be one of the biggest Mountain West Conference match-ups of the year. With a win, UNM could move into a tie with Utah for first-place honors.

Faculty may seek to rein in Lobo athletic program

On Jan. 27, the UNM Faculty Senate voted to make some changes in Lobo sports by supporting resolutions proposed by the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics. The coalition is a national organization of higher education composed of faculty members who want to become involved in the college-sports system.

Lobos clip Falcons' wings

The UNM women's basketball team used a 39-1 run to defeat the Air Force Falcons in convincing fashion 79-31. The Lobos (14-7, 6-2) started the game off a little sluggish by turning the ball over and missing easy shots. Air Force (3-18, 0-8) had the lead a few times during the game, the last being a brief 12-10 edge early in the first half.

Moore comes up just short of elusive

Junior guard Mandi Moore was one assist away from posting a triple-double Saturday against Air Force, as she broke a personal record with 11 rebounds and tied her scoring record with 20 points. Ironically, Moore fell short in the one category she holds the UNM record in - assists.

Streak climbs to 23

Staff Report The UNM men's basketball team came within a hair's breadth of ending its road losing streak Saturday at Air Force. Danny Granger's shot with three seconds left bounced off the back of the rim to let Mountain West Conference leader Air Force escape with a 51-50 win.

Sports in brief

Track and Field The men's and women's track and field teams had their best showings of the season this weekend in Flagstaff, Ariz. The two Lobo teams combined to bring home eight gold medals, 14 season bests and two school records. For the men, distance runner Matt Gonzales won the 800-meter and the 1,500-meter.
