New coach no stranger to game

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo UNM head baseball coach Rich Alday welcomes an old friend to his dugout with the hiring of assistant Dave Bingham. Bingham will primarily work with pitchers in the upcoming season. Bingham has coached baseball for more than 30 years, and brings a remarkable resumÇ to the program.

Miller a fortunate find for UNM

Thursday's practice was especially tough on Lobo swimmers. "We're just warming up right now, and that's her out in front," head coach Bill Spahn said. "That's typical of her. Everyone else is just kind of paddling along, and she's out in front." In her freshman season, Robyn Miller broke a UNM record in the 400 Individual Medley, with a time of 4:28.

A must-win in late January? For the UNM men's basketball program and its showdown with the Utah Utes Saturday, the clichÇ "must-win" hits the nail on the head. UNM welcomes the best of the Mountain West Conference this weekend, the University of Utah and Brigham Young University.

While many UNM students enjoyed a peaceful winter break, the UNM ski team ground out a grueling month of practice and competition amid the Rocky Mountains. With only a small window of opportunity to trek home and see their families for the holidays, the ski team started the 2003-04 ski season strong.

Lobos prepare for Cougars

Brigham Young's last memory of the Lobos is a bitter one - losing to UNM in the Mountain West Conference championship game last season. Thursday, the Lobos will travel to Provo, Utah to face the Cougars, who are still licking their wounds. The Cougars were back-to-back MWC champions until the Lobos dethroned them 52-46 last season in Las Vegas.

New Lobos still show potential

Despite losing the first two conference games to Wyoming and Air Force, two new additions to the Lobo roster show promise for the second half of the season. Since forward Danny Granger and shooting guard Troy DeVries became eligible on Dec. 21, the Lobos have had a new sense of confidence.

Freshman impresses with strength

Wanda Olude has called Maryland, Nigeria and Manitoba home, and she was recruited by the likes of UMass, Nebraska, Boston College, Auburn and Minnesota. But Miss Basketball Manitoba now wears the cherry and silver, and she is a force to be reckoned with. As a freshman, Olude is already known for her great strength.

Air Force flies past Lobos

More than 18,000 people watched the Lobos make history Saturday night - by losing to the Air Force Falcons. The Falcons had never beaten UNM in The Pit. In fact, Air Force had not defeated the Lobos in Albuquerque since 1962 when they played in Johnson Center.

Regents plan for Legislature

Top UNM officials are gearing up for what so far appears to be an uphill battle with the state Legislature in January to fulfill the University's legislative priorities. One major topic at Tuesday's Board of Regents meeting was a rift between what UNM wants and what the state may give regarding salary raises for faculty and staff and tuition increases.

Economic uncertainties, a diminishing job market and rising tuition costs are being blamed for the second student loan default rate in 10 years this year, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Default rates - the proportion of students failing to repay their college loans on time - rose nationally to 5.

Ski team eyes NCAA championship

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The UNM ski team has one goal in mind as it begins this season - a national championship. Head coach George Brooks said this year's team has the potential to be the best team he has ever coached. That is a significant statement, considering that under his tutelage, the UNM ski team has recorded 20 top-10 NCAA Championship finishes, including a second-place finish in the 1992 NCAAs - the highest finish of any Lobo athletic team in school history.

DeVries, Granger suiting up for tipoff

The time has finally come. Sunday for the first time, junior transfers Danny Granger and Troy DeVries will suit up in the cherry and silver and join the Lobos in combat against Coppin State. The two came to UNM around the same time, early last January and ever since, Lobo basketball fans have been looking forward to seeing them in action.

Lobos keep Aggies in check

The UNM women's basketball team extended its winning streak over the New Mexico State Aggies to 15, with a 62-39 win at The Pit Sunday afternoon. But the win wasn't supposed to be easy for UNM. The Aggies are led by seniors Princess Moore and Sinnamonn Garrett.

Lobos facing stiff pressure

The Lobo men passed their first test of the season Monday night by beating Sacramento State - now it's time for the UNM women to prove how good they really are. For the first time this season the Lobos will play in front of a hostile crowd when they travel to the University of San Francisco Thursday to face the Lady Dons.
