Athletes of the Week

Freshman striker Ben Ashwill of the men's soccer team and junior forward Marte Dolva of the women's soccer team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo athletes of the week. Ashwill had an outstanding weekend, leading the men's soccer team to victories over the University of Illinois at Chicago and Georgia Southern University.

Falcons slip by Lobos in OT

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force Academy fullback Steve Massie scored on a four-yard touchdown run for the Falcons on their first possession of overtime to give Air Force a 38-31 win Saturday. The loss leaves UNM 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Freshman trio impress again in UNM victories

Staff Report The UNM men's soccer team continued its impressive start to the season this weekend. The Lobos improved to 4-0-0 with wins over Georgia Southern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago. UNM's talented freshmen were impressive again in first-year head coach Jeremy Fishbein's aggressive offense.

UNM faces tough test at Air Force

Coming off a mediocre 38-24 victory over Weber State University last Saturday, UNM (1-1) is looking for a better performance in its Mountain West Conference opener Saturday at the Air Force Academy. This game is the earliest conference opener since 1993 and it is the Falcons' homecoming game - something the Lobos see as a lack of respect.

Ten years ago no one could have predicted that a kid from a small town ten minutes from Taos would be claiming Mountain West Conference cross country runner of the week awards. But that's exactly what UNM cross-country runner Ben Ortega did this week.

Lobos start season with two wins

Staff Report The UNM men's soccer team started the 2002 season in winning fashion taking two games in Las Vegas, Nev., over the weekend. The Lobos defeated Northern Illinois University 2-1 on Friday and shutout Marshall University 3-0 on Sunday. Both games showed off UNM's freshman class, especially freshman Lance Watson, who scored in both games.

Women's weekend ends with losses to ASU, Longhorns

An eager, energetic crowd of more than 900 came to cheer on the UNM women's soccer team in its home opener against Arizona State University. Unfortunately the equally energetic Lobos were unable to grab the victory, falling to the 23rd-ranked Sundevils 2-1 at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Athletes of the Week

Senior tailback Quincy Wright of the football team and Anna Reines of the volleyball team are the New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Wright had an impressive weekend in leading the football team to a 38-24 victory over Weber State University. The senior tailback ran for 265 yards on 27 carries, breaking the single-game rushing record by a UNM player set by Mike Williams.

On the first play from scrimmage, University of New Mexico tailback Quincy Wright proved that he is a man to be reckoned with this year. Wright shaked and baked his way through the middle of the Weber State University defense and scampered into the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown run 19 seconds into the game.

Lobos lackluster in victory

A record-breaking performance by Quincy Wright and a couple of big plays saved UNM from an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Weber State University Wildcats Saturday night at University Stadium. Wright finished the night with the all-time single-game record for rushing yards with 267 yards on 27 attempts with three touchdowns.

Postseason repeat a priority for UNM

The UNM men's soccer team shocked many in 2001. The Lobos, winless in regualr season play, entered the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament seeded eighth in the eight-team league and proceeded to win three games in four days - including a 3-2 first-round upset of regular season champion California State University at Sacramento.

Lobos soar past Skyhawks 2-1 with junior's overtime goal

Staff Report Junior midfielder Micah Newman propelled UNM to a 2-1 overtime victory over Fort Lewis College Sunday in Durango, Colo. Newman's goal came 12 minutes into overtime in the Lobos' final exhibition match of the season. The Lobos got off to a good start when freshman forward Ben Ashwill scored in the 11th minute of action.

Wolfpack sacks UNM in opener

North Carolina State University quarterback Philip Rivers threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Wolfpack handed the Lobos a 34-14 loss in the season-opening Black Coaches Association Bowl game in Raleigh, N.C. The Lobos (0-1) fell behind early, mostly due to the heroics of Rivers, who finished the game 15-of-24 passing for 276 yards, with just one interception.
