Football: Lobos blow 4th quarter lead, lose 31-23 to Aztecs

An inability to move the ball late in the game, coupled with the returns of two of San Diego State’s best offensive players, doomed the Lobos on Saturday night, as former UNM coach Rocky Long returned to town and lead his Aztecs to a 31-23 win over the Lobos. The game couldn’t have started better for UNM if it had been scripted. On SDSU’s first possession of the game, Adebayo Soremekun scooped a fumble from Aztec’s backup quarterback Ryan Agnew, who started the game, and rumbled all the way down to the end zone for a touchdown to give the Lobos a 7-0 lead and electrify the sideline.

Women's Soccer: Lobos fall short in championship match for second straight year

For the second year in a row, the University of New Mexico women's soccer team advanced to the championship match in the Mountain West Tournament. Last season, the Lobos knocked out San José State in the semifinal round on penalty kicks, but a year later the Spartans exacted their revenge and took down UNM 1-0 — denying New Mexico a shot at a conference title and automatic NCAA berth.

Men's Soccer: Lobos end regular season with close loss

The Lobos regular season finale was somewhat representative of how the season has gone. They had weathered plenty of pressure, and appeared to be on their way to forcing overtime against the No. 19 Charlotte 49ers. Then, Charlotte forward Tommy Madden struck with less than three minutes left in regulation and gave the 49ers a 1-0 win.

Fantasy Football: Defensive strategy

Last week was a dive into the value of wide receivers based on the potency of their offense and whether they are the first or third option. This week will compare rostering an elite offense or looking for a defense with a good matchup every week, also known as streaming. The current top five defenses and most commonly drafted defenses were included. For the streaming options, the bottom five offenses identified from last week were the targets. Those were Arizona, Buffalo, Tennessee, Dallas and Jacksonville.

The University of New Mexico football team will have a fresh face at quarterback and will be missing its leading tackler when it hosts the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday evening at Dreamstyle Stadium. Women's basketball: Lobos open up the season with a win

The New Mexico Women’s Basketball team opened the new season the way that every team hopes to — with a win. The Lobos defeated Division II Lubbock Christian University on Tuesday night at Dreamstyle Arena, 62-55. UNM fought through a bad shooting night that saw the team go 5-33 from three as well as 21 turnovers to beat the Lady Chaps. “I think we played hard enough,” Head Coach Mike Bradbury said. “Defensively we did a really good job of, I’m not going to say following the plan, because we didn’t really prepare. We played our base defense, but we did that well. The only thing defensively we probably didn’t do well was rebound so that was a little disappointing.”

Men's soccer: Lobos play last home game of final season

Senior night occurs every season for the University of New Mexico Men’s Soccer team, but this one was unlike any other. The night began with a show of solidarity between rival teams before a crowd of 1,556, the second largest crowd of the season for the Lobos. But in the end, the result was a familiar one for the 2018, and likely final, iteration of UNM Men’s Soccer. “Their coach Chris Grasse is a class act,” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said about the moment. “Chris asked if just as a sign of solidarity they could join us. I asked our guys if they were good with it and they were. That’s kind of just been the outpouring all over the country, every college program. It’s nice.”

Football: New Mexico gets crushed 61-19 by Utah State

The New Mexico football team scored first on Saturday, but the heavy underdog took it on the chin for the second time in as many weeks as they were decimated by Utah State 61-19 on the road. Things started off well for New Mexico (3-5, 1-3 MW) as it got a defensive stop and took its opening drive into Utah State territory and came away with a field goal to open up the scoring and take a 3-0 lead just a couple of minutes in the game. The score came off the foot of freshman kicker Andrew Shelley, who drilled the 53-yard field goal — the second-longest in school history, according to a release.

Football: Lobos struggle to draw fans to games

The University of New Mexico Football team is halfway through its home schedule, and at the current pace, it will be the lowest number of fans per game in the Bob Davie era. Through three games, the Lobos are averaging 17,908 fans to see the team play at the 39,224 seat Dreamstyle Stadium. The home opener against University of the Incarnate Word, which drew 18,213 fans, was the smallest crowd for a home opener since at least the 2003 season, the last year which the information is available online for every game.

Fantasy Football: Elite Offenses vs. Bottom Rung Offenses

Last night, how to pick a flex player was the talking point for the opening fantasy football segment. This time around, the point of emphasis is on how third option wide receivers on the top five offenses compare to the number one receivers of the worst five offenses. This was done a little tongue-in- cheek, of course the number one option was going to be better than the third option. Bad offenses need to give the ball to someone and will still have about the same amount of possessions as the top tier teams. This has been my orthodox method for years— start the player who will lead his team in targets. The explosiveness of the team itself does not matter as much as that of the player— something most people will realize when they look at the numbers.

Football: Fresno State’s defense stonewalls UNM in 38-7 victory

The University of New Mexico football team was beaten, battered and bruised in a 38-7 thumping by the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday evening at Dreamstyle Stadium. In head coach Bob Davie’s assessment, it was a product of an “unpolished” offense and a culmination of unnecessary penalties. Nine Lobo penalties — which accounted for 125 yards — didn’t help out much either, as Davie pointed out in the press conference after the game.

Women's Soccer: Lobos continue to impress at home

The University of New Mexico women's soccer team has had one of its most successful campaigns at home and continue to take care of business over the weekend. New Mexico (10-5-2, 6-2-2 MW) improved to 8-1-1 at home — the most wins at UNM Soccer Complex since the 2013 season. The team notched eight home victories that season as well, but also played an additional five games in Albuquerque to get there. The Lobos started the weekend in the upper half off the Mountain West standings, but likely needed at least one win to stay there. UNM picked up two and appears to be in good shape with just one regular season game remaining before the Mountain West Tournament.

Football: Lobos search for identity on offense

Fresno State came to Albuquerque and proved once again why they are considered one of the top teams in the Group of Five conferences in their 38-7 victory over the New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos, who lost consecutive games for the first time this season, struggled to generate anything offensively, especially in the first half. It took the Lobos until their drive which began with 3:21 to play in the second quarter and ended in a touchdown, to break into Fresno State territory with the ball. Prior to that, the Lobos had been unable to move past their own 35-yard-line. Those would be the only points that UNM would score.

Men's soccer: Lobos to face highest ranked opponent so far this season

The University of New Mexico Men’s Soccer team will face its toughest test of the season on Sunday against the No. 3 ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, Kentucky at 11 a.m.. The Lobos are coming off of a 2-1 win over South Carolina last Saturday, a victory which broke a four-game losing streak and came on the heels of the announcement that there would be no spring season for the team, a decision that further angered supporters of the program.
