Football: Lobos to start Tuioti on Saturday

Tevaka Tuioti will start at quarterback for the Lobos on Saturday, head coach Bob Davie announced after practice on Tuesday. “I’m excited to get back on the field,” Tuioti said. It’s a different feeling when gametime comes, you’ve got the adrenaline coming and I don’t worry about (getting hurt) though, I’m just here to play football and have fun.” Tuioti, who suffered a concussion in the first quarter of the Lobos matchup against Wisconsin, missed two weeks of practice and returned to practice on Monday. He had to earn the starting job back after a rusty return to the field Monday and a week of strong practices from Sheriron Jones, who started for the Lobos against New Mexico State.

Football: Lobos prepare for tough test against Liberty

It will be no easy test, University of New Mexico head football coach Bob Davie said, when his Lobo team hosts the Liberty Flames on Saturday for its homecoming game. Liberty, an independent FBS program, is coming off of a loss to North Texas, in which it was routed 47-7 at home. Prior to that the Flames lost on the road to Army, but won their season opener over Old Dominion, 52-10. It was Liberty’s dominating victory to start the season that impressed Davie, especially because Old Dominion recently defeated a much bigger program in Virginia Tech. Last year, Liberty went into Waco, Texas and defeated Baylor on the road in its season opener.

Men's Soccer: Lobos prepare to face undefeated St. Mary's

The New Mexico Men’s Soccer team will look to build off its first win of the conference season against the No. 10 team in the country, St. Mary’s College (Calif.) on Wednesday night before resuming Conference-USA play on Saturday morning against Florida International University. St. Mary’s comes into the matchup at 9-0-0, one of two teams in the country that has yet to record a result other than a win. The Gaels are coming off of a 1-0 victory over then No. 13 UC Davis and recorded their sixth shutout of the season in the process. SMC has only given up four goals to opponents all season, and have one of the most potent offenses in the country, averaging three goals per game so far this season.

Men's Soccer: Lobos bounce back to beat Florida Atlantic

The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team secured its first shutout of the season and snapped a three game losing streak in a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic University, with both goals coming from players who hadn’t scored yet this season. Simon Spangenberg and Billy Jones were the goal scorers for the Lobos (3-5-0, 1-1-0 C-USA) and were able to give the Lobos an offensive boost on a night when the team’s two leading scorers, Matt Puig and Omar Grey combined for only one shot on goal.

Volleyball: Lobos fall to .500 after straight-set loss to Boise State

The Boise State Broncos defeated the University of New Mexico volleyball team, playing host to the Lobos on Saturday in Idaho. The Lobos (7-7, 1-1 MW) won its conference opener against Utah State on Wednesday, but fell to the Broncos in straight sets, looking like they were steps behind in each of them as they tried to compete. Boise State opened by scoring six of the first seven points to gain an early five-point advantage. That lead swelled to seven as the match progressed, but the Lobos were able to close the gap with a 6-0 run — one that included three kills from outside hitter Lauren Twitty and an ace from libber Mercedes Pacheco to pull with 14-13.

Women's Soccer: Late goal halts UNM's home unbeaten streak

The Lobos scored first and didn't trail for the nearly the entirety of the match — but when they finally did fall behind by surrendering a late goal to the Wyoming Cowgirls, there simply wasn't enough time to even the score. It was the 84th minute. With the match in the waning stages, things seemed to be trending toward overtime until the Wyoming Cowgirls stunned the University of New Mexico women's soccer team — knocking through a goal in the 84th minute to garner its first lead of the day. Wyoming (6-2-2, 1-1 MW) went up 3-2 on the scoreboard and the score held as it handed UNM its first loss at home this season. The three goals allowed by the Lobos on Sunday afternoon equaled the total number of goals they had given up in the previous five home matches combined.

Women's Soccer: Lobos run home win streak to five with 3-0 victory in conference opener

The University of New Mexico women's soccer team remained perfect at home, dispatching of the Colorado State Rams in a 3-0 shutout at the UNM Soccer Complex on Friday night. New Mexico (5-3, 1-0 MW) was aggressive from the outset and applied early pressure on the opposing goalkeeper. CSU junior Hunter Peifer entered Friday night with a 79 percent save rate, giving up just five goals this season en route to putting up two clean sheets. But the Lobo attack put Peifer on her heels — registering four shots and two corner kicks within the first nine minutes. Freshman Alesia Garcia narrowly missed opening the scoring with an attempt that hit the crossbar, but sophomore midfielder Cami Floth broke through about a minute later with a goal at the 8:54 mark to make it 1-0 in favor of the Lobos.

Women's Soccer: Lobos open conference play hoping to extend home winning streak

Home is what you make it. And the University of New Mexico women's soccer team has made the UNM Soccer Complex a workshop where it manufactures one thing — wins. New Mexico (4-3) is winless on the road, but has gone undefeated so far on its home field. That should be good news since the team is in Albuquerque again to host the Colorado State Rams — a team that is 0-5 all-time against the UNM — in the Lobos' Mountain West conference opener. The match is also the conference opener for Colorado State, which has posted a 3-3-2 record so far this season. The Rams have only scored two goals over their last five matches, but have managed to win two of the last three to get back to a .500 record. The most record win came on Sunday, Sept. 16 — a 1-0 shutout over the Southern Methodist Mustangs.

Football: Marcus Hayes named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week

Marcus Hayes, a redshirt freshman safety who had two interceptions against New Mexico State — including one for a touchdown with less than a minute left that ultimately sealed the game — was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. He’s the first UNM player to be honored this season. Hayes, who hails from really Rockford, Illinois, was key in the Lobos’ win over in-stage rival NMSU on Saturday.

Men's Soccer: New Mexico loses 2-1 in C-USA opener to Old Dominion

New Mexico (2-5, 0-1 C-USA) lost its third straight match and seemed to be caught off guard as the visiting team landed a quick point when senior forward Max Wilschrey went top shelf just 1:51 into the match for the early 1-0 lead. The goal scored seemed to stun the crowd and was a rough start for UNM goalkeeper Alex Fetterly, who got his first start for the Lobos on Saturday evening. Fetterly had seemed to settle down despite being under a constant barrage of pressure from the Monarchs. Over the next several minutes, he recorded a trio of saves and saw an ODU header narrowly miss the mark, bouncing off the post.

Football: Lobos flip script, use turnovers to defeat Aggies

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Forced turnovers and a stout rushing attack willed the University of New Mexico Lobos to its first win over the New Mexico State Aggies since 2015, as the Lobos defeated NMSU 42-25 in Las Cruces on Saturday evening. New Mexico (2-1) was also able to get its rushing attack going on offense, with junior running back Ahmari Davis rushing for three touchdowns and redshirt senior running back Tyrone Owens going for 110 yards and a touchdown. The Lobos were the recipient of five interceptions against the Aggies, one of which was a pick-six. It was the most interceptions forced by a UNM defense.

Hockey: New Mexico earns a draw and a win in season's opening series

The University of New Mexico hockey team returned to its home ice at the Outpost Ice Arena over the weekend and seemed to pick up where it left off last season, despite having fewer players on the roster. New Mexico (1-0-1) earned a draw on Friday night in the season opener, followed by a gritty performance in a physical matchup and Saturday that yielded a 3-2 victory over the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. Head coach Grant Harvey said he was pleased with the team’s overall effort and thought the players responded well given the circumstances.

Football: Dream come true for De'John Rogers and Lobo secondary

LAS CRUCES-- For Lobos defensive back De’John Rogers, dreams do come true. Behind five interceptions, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since 2003, hauled in by the University of New Mexico defense, including that interception from Rogers in the second quarter that resulted in an easy touchdown to pull UNM within three, the Lobos were able to win a sloppy game over the New Mexico State University Aggies.

Football: Pivotal game for both New Mexico football programs as Aggies go for three in a row over Lobos

Both college football teams are probably entering Saturday's Rio Grande Rivalry game exactly where most fans thought they might be. Saturday's matchup could mark a pivotal moment in both team's seasons and a lot might be riding on the line at Aggie Memorial Stadium. UNM head coach Bob Davie has often referred to not letting the air out of the balloon, making the analogy in several of the past season openers. The idea being that teams can sometimes let a pin poke that metaphorical balloon and things go flat before it even realizes what happened. Even though it is week three for UNM, not many things could let whatever is left in balloon that is Lobo fan support, than losing to its in-state rival for the third season in a row. A loss for the University of New Mexico football team could undo any momentum the program has started to regain and potentially thwart hopes of trying to bring in the casual fan to attend future home games — support a financially struggling athletic department could desperately use.

Women's Soccer: Lobos and Aggies come together for something bigger than rivalry

The college football edition of the Rio Grande Rivalry will take place on Saturday, but fans don't have to wait that long to get a peek at the Lobos and Aggies battling things out for pride an bragging rights and women's soccer takes the spotlight Friday night. Things seem to be going in opposite directions for the two programs. The University of New Mexico women's soccer team has benefitted from its ability to win at home to even its season record, while New Mexico State has stumbled out of the gate and has enjoyed just one victory so far. Fans of New Mexico and New Mexico State never seem to be at a loss for words about each other, and often times they don't agree on much. But there is one thing the teams agree on and the schools will even partner together to prove it.

Hockey: Lobo hockey club back on ice to host season opener

The UNM hockey team is back this Friday facing off against the Colorado School of Mines for their opening game of the season. Last year, the team, led by head coach Grant Harvey, landed themselves in the ACHA National Championship. Last year, the Lobos finished the regular season with a 20-4-1 record and impressively remained undefeated for the first 11 of those games. The goal this year will be for the team to somehow find its way back a nationals— something Harvey said would be an achievement in and of itself.

Football: Sheriron Jones readies for start against NMSU

It’s now or never for the junior transfer Sheriron Jones, who finds himself the starting quarterback for the University of New Mexico Lobos in week three of the season, against the rival New Mexico State Aggies. It was only two Saturdays ago that Jones, a Moreno Valley, California native, found himself as the third option for the Lobos, with redshirt sophomore Tevaka Tuioti being named the starter, and redshirt senior Colton Gerhart being named Tuioti’s backup. Jones, at one point, was at Tennessee as a freshman, although he didn’t play and sat on the bench before transferring. He then played at Mt. San Jacinto, a junior college, before coming to New Mexico.

Men's Soccer: Lobos lose heart breaker against UCSB

The Lobo men’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the UCSB Gauchos on Tuesday night at the UNM Soccer Complex as a pair of corner kicks in the opening minutes of the second half proved the difference. “That was a game you needed to handle,” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “Two bad mistakes in the first seven minutes of the second half, that’s what we talked about. I’m pretty disappointed in our performance and our maturity today.”
