Cross Country: New Mexico returns to Wisconsin for Pre-National meet

The University of New Mexico cross country team traveled to Wisconsin just two weeks ago, but will make a return trip to compete again in Madison at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on Friday. Zimmer Championship Course was kind to the New Mexico women, who placed three runners in the top-10 en route to a third-place finish overall. Sophomore runner Weini Kelati was the top finisher for the Lobos and was rewarded with Mountain West Athlete of the Week recognition for her efforts.

Football: UNM heads to Fort Collins to take on Colorado State

Developing off a dominant performance at UNLV last weekend, the University of New Mexico Lobos will hit the road again to take on the Colorado State Rams on Saturday afternoon. UNM, however, has not defeated CSU since 2009. The Lobos (3-2, 1-0 Mountain West), behind a stellar performance from junior QB Sheriron Jones and their defense, blew out the Rebels, 50-14, in what was the conference opener for both teams.

Volleyball: Lobos prepare for Cali roadtrip

Coming off back-to-back victories over the University of Nevada and San José State, the UNM volleyball team takes on San Diego State in California on Thursday. The team is currently first in the Mountain West Conference, standing with a 5-1 conference record. Lauren Twitty, an outside hitter for the Lobos, is currently in the top five for kills in the MWC with 252 kills in 72 sets for the season and 3.50 k/s. San Diego is seventh in the conference standings with a 3-3 record. With both teams currently holding a winning streak under their belts, the Lobos come into the match with strong statistics backing them.

Women's Soccer: Lobos score three unanswered in second half to stun Utah State

Things weren't looking very promising. The University of New Mexico women's soccer team trailed 2-0 to the Utah State Aggies on Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex, despite outshooting its opponent in the opening 45 minutes. Two goals allowed and just one save on the UNM side, while Utah State's keeper saved both of the rare attempts on goal on the other. But after halftime, the Lobos' fortune quickly flipped and the team rode the wave and overcame the odds to earn a 3-2 win over the Aggies and pick up an important Mountain Conference victory. UNM head coach Heather Dyche said the win was obviously important in the standings and the halftime message focused on the women having faith in themselves and their abilities. She said they really played for each other, which makes it fun to be around.

Men's Soccer: Lobos lose to UAB in four-game skid

The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team (3-9-0, 1-3-0 C-USA) lost its fourth straight game on Saturday against the UAB Blazers (3-6-2, 1-3-1 C-USA), 4-0. The Blazers opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Aidan O’Hara drilled a ball past Lobo goalkeeper Ford Parker thanks to a through ball from Tarnue Tyler. It was the first of three shots that the Blazers would put on the goal in the half. The Lobos had their only shot on goal of the match at the end of the half, as a Nick Barreiro free kick nearly deflected off a player and into the net before a save from UAB keeper James

Football: Lobos dominate UNLV on the road in Mountain West opener

The University of New Mexico football team put on a dominant performance behind junior QB Sheriron Jones and stellar defensive play, as they defeated the UNLV Rebels 50-14 in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. Jones threw for 250 yards on 13-of-20 attempts, including four touchdowns through the air. His offense, in a well-balanced affair, had 252 yards on the ground. Jones rushed for 72 yards. Meanwhile, New Mexico’s defense forced eight three-and-outs during the game, and didn’t allow the Rebels’ offense to pass the 100-yard threshold until halfway through the fourth quarter.

Volleyball: Lobos first place in conference after pair of wins

In the past week, the UNM Lobo volleyball team was victorious over two Mountain West Conference teams, moving the Lobos to number one in conference ranking. Thursday’s game against the University of Nevada Wolf Pack resulted in a close five matches that resulted in the Lobos winning 15-4 in final set. In the first (25-14) and third (25-17) sets, the Lobos came onto the court powerful. The team showed the determination they lacked in the second (13-25) and fourth (21-25) sets. The team gave up a total of 14 serving error points to the Wolf Pack throughout the match, but put down 57 hard-hitting kills against UNLV.

Hockey: ASUNM approves reduce appropriated funding for team

On Wednesday night, AJ Goff, the UNM Lobo hockey President, went in front of the ASUNM finance committee to determine the budget the team would receive for the 2018- 19 school year. The approval issued in the meeting came late after a filing error was made when the Lobo hockey club submitted its application, originally postponed the approval. UNM Hockey was the first order of business on ASUNM’s agenda Wednesday night.

Football: UNM hope to bounce back against UNLV

Once again junior Sheriron Jones will lead his University of New Mexico teammates as the starting quarterback, this time as the Lobos travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV in their conference opener. But New Mexico (2-2, 0-0 MW) has many things to fix, point one being turning the ball over less, especially for Jones. “We have things we need to correct,” UNM head football coach Bob Davie said on Tuesday at his weekly press conference. “The goal is no different than it would be if we beat Liberty, or however the ebbs and flows of the season goes we have to continue to get better.”

Men's Soccer: Lobos drop sixth straight home match, bested by Loyola Marymount in overtime

University of New Mexico men's soccer dropped its third consecutive match overall and sixth straight at home after succumbing to Loyola Marymount at the UNM Soccer Complex in overtime. New Mexico (3-8, 1-2 C-USA) started the season with a promising 4-2 win over then-No. 22 Seattle, but the Lobos have failed to win a match on their home pitch since. It has been a rare sight for the Lobos to even hold a lead during the current skid and even that didn't work out — UNM lost a halftime advantage the last time out after surrendering three goals in the final 45 minutes against Florida International en route to a 4-2 loss.

Cross Country: Women place third, Kelati receives conference honors

The University of New Mexico cross country team competed at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational last Friday and earned a top-3 finish for the women and a 26th place performance for the men as several runners saw their first action of the season. UNM head coach Joe Franklin said prior to the event that Nuttycombe would feature several ranked schools and said the talented men’s and women’s field that would be among the most competitive that will be seen all season. “The quality of the meet is the closest that you will find to the NCAA Championships,” the head coach said.

Hockey: Lobos outpaced in consecutive losses

The University of New Mexico hockey club took on the Colorado Mesa Mavericks this weekend at home, but were unable to overcome the challenges Mesa brought to the rink. With alternative captain Garrett Inman out for the season due to an injured knee, the Lobo team faced obstacles going into the weekend’s matches. On Friday night, the Lobos came onto the ice with a competitive attitude that was evenly matched by the Mavericks. Nate Taglialegami, center for the Lobos, pitched in the first goal of the night with no assists. UNM held their small lead through both the first and the second period.

Football: Lobos get burned in homecoming game

Homecoming didn’t go as planned for Bob Davie and his University of New Mexico football team, as they fell 52-43 to the Liberty Flames at Dreamstyle Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After being down 42-10 at one point, the Lobos managed to rally back within striking distance in the second half with a resurgent offense that saw junior quarterback Sheriron Jones take over for Tevaka Tuioti, who fractured his clavicle early in the first quarter. Tuioti will have surgery on Monday, and is likely to miss the rest of the season, Davie said.

Basketball: JaQuan Lyle ruptures Achilles

JaQuan Lyle ruptured his Achilles tendon during the University of New Mexico Men’s Basketball team’s second practice of the season on Saturday, the team confirmed. The story was initially reported by Geoff Grammer of the Albuquerque Journal. “I am going into this process trying to get 1% better every day, both physically and mentally, to be ready to compete next season,” Lyle said in a release. “I am so thankful to everyone for their thoughts and considerations. Go Lobos!”

Women's Soccer: Lobos build early lead, snare first road win of the season

University of New Mexico women's soccer had not held a lead on the road at any point this season entering Friday's matchup with the Fresno State Bulldogs, but quickly built a first-half lead that helped the team snag its first road win on the season. New Mexico (6-4, 2-1 MW) scored just one goal through its first three road matches, but took just under two and a half minutes to put up a goal against the Bulldogs after Jessica Nelson set up sophomore forward Gwen Maly placed the ball just over goalkeeper Nicole Theroux. The goal, which was Maly's third of the season, gave New Mexico a 1-0 lead and but the Lobos in the unfamiliar role of playing from ahead. That luxury is something that probably helped UNM withstand being outshot 23-16 overall in the game and getting doubled up on shots in the second half.

Football: Lobos lose Tuioti for the year

The New Mexico Football team lost to Liberty 52-43 on Saturday night at Dreamstyle Stadium, but what could be the biggest loss for the team occurred in the second quarter when Tevaka Tuioti, in his first game back after suffering a concussion in the game against Wisconsin, broke his left clavicle at the end of a 24-yard scramble. Head coach Bob Davie said that Tuioti will have surgery on it Monday and that he is “probably” out for the year. In his place, Sheriron Jones, who started the game against New Mexico State, will be the starting quarterback.

Men's soccer: Second half mistakes doom Lobos against Florida International

It was a tale of two halves for the University of New Mexico Men’s Soccer team (3-7-0, 1-2-0 C-USA) on Saturday against Florida International University (4-5-0, 3-0-0 C-USA), as three second half goals for the Panthers resulted in a 4-2 win for FIU. “Pretty disappointing,” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “Made a mistake and gave up an early goal. (We) came back and I thought we closed out the first half really well with two goals and had a good grip on the game. We talked at halftime that the first ten minutes was crucial and that that was going to be their opportunity to get momentum back. ...You’re not going to win games when you give up goals in those key moments.”

Men's soccer: Lobos loses late to St. Mary's

The New Mexico Men’s Soccer team was 21 seconds away from forcing overtime with the No. 10 team in the nation when St. Mary’s caught Lobo keeper Alex Fetterly out of the box and capitalized to seal a 1-0 win. “That’s about as tough as it comes,” Lobos head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “I thought we had good sequences in the game and I thought as the second half picked up we were quite good, and that we had the majority of play. Little mistakes where we gave the ball away. That’s a team that is very good in transition, they had some dangerous attacking guys that we gave too many opportunities, we were not disciplined enough with the ball.” The game began with the Lobos controlling the possession and holding the ball in the final third, but failing to generate many shots or chances. They only managed to put one shot on goal both in the half and in the game and it came off the foot of Matt Puig in the first half.

Volleyball: Lobos defeat UNLV in four sets

It wasn’t perfect, but after a shaky second set from the University of New Mexico volleyball team, the Lobos rallied to win the final two sets to defeat the visiting UNLV Rebels on Wednesday evening at Johnson Gym. UNLV entered the contest at 11-3 and a perfect 2-0 in the Mountain West, while New Mexico was a mediocre .500 and coming off of a loss to the Boise State Broncos. Now, with the win, UNM (8-7) stands at 2-1 in conference play -- and is tied with UNLV in the Mountain West, respectively.

Football: Lobos to start Tuioti on Saturday

Tevaka Tuioti will start at quarterback for the Lobos on Saturday, head coach Bob Davie announced after practice on Tuesday. “I’m excited to get back on the field,” Tuioti said. It’s a different feeling when gametime comes, you’ve got the adrenaline coming and I don’t worry about (getting hurt) though, I’m just here to play football and have fun.” Tuioti, who suffered a concussion in the first quarter of the Lobos matchup against Wisconsin, missed two weeks of practice and returned to practice on Monday. He had to earn the starting job back after a rusty return to the field Monday and a week of strong practices from Sheriron Jones, who started for the Lobos against New Mexico State.
