Lobos get taste of revenge

The Lobos rallied to a stunning second-half victory over 25th ranked Utah, 51-48 Thursday night at The Pit. UNM lost to the Utes in overtime last month and have been anticipating revenge ever since. However, instead of coming out confident on its home floor, UNM seemed somewhat intimidated throughout the first half.

Men's basketball jockeys for Mountain West spot

The night of Jan. 28, 2002, might not ring a bell in the minds of many students at UNM. For five of the nine current Lobo men's basketball players and their head coach, it means nothing, because they were elsewhere, not yet a part of the program. To Lobo basketball enthusiasts and veteran players Ruben Douglas, Jamaal Williams, Chad Bell and Ryan Ashcraft, that date marks the last time UNM earned a victory on foreign hardwood.

LETTER: Legislation to lower entrance standards

Editor, A disastrous House Bill 581 is looming in Santa Fe. If passed, it will lower and/or set academic entrance and eligibility requirements for student-athletes at UNM and other New Mexico state universities to that of the lowest -- for academic entrance requirements and eligibility -- conference school or lowest school in the NCAA (if the state university isn't in a conference), i.

LETTER: Protest war by living simply

Editor, I oppose all war. I oppose all weapons of war. I voted for no one for U.S. Senate and House in last November's election. None of the New Mexican candidates for Congress opposed all war and all weapons of war. There is not a dime's worth of difference between most Republican and most Democratic members of Congress on robbing and murdering our neighbors abroad.

Chicano/a Studies still without new director

Members of the steering committee charged with making recommendations about the search for a new director position for the Chicano/a Studies program decided Wednesday to not recommend the position's lone candidate to the dean of University College. "I'm going to have to go and speak with the provost of the University and speak to the steering committee of Chicano Studies about where to go from here and about what resources are available or about what resources we might secure," said Peter White, dean of University College.

LETTER: Irresponsible protestors dangerous

Editor, This is an open letter to the irresponsible idiots who marched through the chemistry building protesting a possible war against Saddam Hussein Wednesday afternoon. You are certainly at liberty to have your protests on campus outside of the buildings, but when you bring your disruptive noise into a building with laboratory classes in progress, your "expression of freedom of speech" comes closer to attempted assault.

New Molotov album attacks racism

Like the bomb it gets its name from, Molotov is made from simple ingredients -- rock, underground rap, mainstream rap, dance music and equal parts English, Spanish and Chilango. And it's explosive. On its third CD release Dance and Dense Denso, the Mexico City-based quartet defies categorization, tweaking with styles and sounds as easily as some musicians tweak the levels on their amplifiers.

'Chicago' a musical home run

Velma Kelley nails it when she breathlessly says, "OK fellas, keep your socks up, 'cause you ain't seen nothin' yet," because the musical has returned to the big screen with all that jazz and then some. Not since "Grease" has a musical created such a buzz, but the new film version of "Chicago" has wowed Hollywood, the Oscars and American audiences.
