Collins named as Sevilleta director

The program director for ecological studies at the National Science Foundation has been selected as director for the Sevilleta Long-Term Ecological Research Program. Scott Collins, who has been with the National Science Foundation since 1992, began as director of Sevilleta on March 1.

LETTER: Legalizing cannabis not a dangerous act

Editor, Eric Howerton did a good job of explaining the irrationality and irresponsibility of the anti-marijuana ads plastering the air waves. He also shows some understanding of the history of marijuana laws. So, I can’t understand how he came to such an absurd conclusion that legalization would be dangerous until we change our attitudes about marijuana use.

“Voces Feministas,” a radio collective focused on political topics surrounding women of color, has been operating out of KUNM for more than 20 years. Lobos fall 91-81 to Brigham Young

The Lobos took an emotional 91-81 loss to Brigham Young University last night at The Pit. Playing in his last home game of his career, Ruben Douglas was hounded relentlessly all night by the Cougar defense. Douglas still finished with 27 points but could not get any open looks at the basket as he shot seven-for-22 from the field.

Regents approve policies, funding

The UNM Board of Regents’ Finance and Facilities Committee met Monday to discuss, among other things, the SUB construction project and the function of Lobo Energy, Inc. within the University. Julie Weaks Gutierrez, vice president for Business and Finance, said that the University is in the final stages of negotiation with potential new construction managers to oversee the SUB project.

UNM professor new speaker for Computer Society

Bader, an assistant professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, said he is honored to have been selected for the speaker program.

Bad boy juggler graces UNM

The UNM Unicycling and Juggling Club hopes to drum up interest for the group tonight with a free presentation of world-renowned juggler Jason Garfield at 7:30 p.m. in Woodward Hall. Garfield, the “bad boy” of professional juggling, will bring his act to campus in a performance sponsored by Student Special Events.

Science fiction cartoon action packed, twisted

Expert asseses U.S. role in Middle East

An expert on the traditions and history of the Middle East visited UNM Monday to lecture about the current crisis facing the region and the shifting role that the United States is playing in its fate. R. Stephen Humphreys, professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern history at the University of California at Santa Barbara, explained to a large crowd inside Dane Smith Hall that a book he wrote in 1998, Between Memory and Desire: The Middle East in a Troubled Age, meant to detail the current events of the region, would need an overhaul to be correct after Sept.

GPSA council tackles funds for research

The GPSA Council took action on only one agenda item Saturday but did meet one of UNM’s newest regents and heard standing committee reports — two of which indicated some positive news for UNM graduate students. The Graduate and Professional Student Association council meeting began with a request from James Koch, one of the UNM Board of Regents’ four newest members.
