Letter: Hussein, U.S. both guilty of bullying

Editor, Last week, you printed an article by Keith Hudson titled "U.S. Must Take Action." In it Mr. Hudson accused Saddam Hussein of invading Iran for oil, killing innocent people and bullying other countries. All of these accusations are true. Hussein invaded Iran in the '80s.

Lobo men need makeover

College basketball is a 40-minute game. Playing only 30 minutes, on average, constitutes a loss, especially during the conference schedule. This scenario has been the storyline for this season's New Mexico men's basketball squad. While staying competitive in all of their six conference games, the Lobos have not gotten over the hump, winning just one.

Letter: U.S. thinks too 'big'

Editor, Reading the Daily Lobo on Wednesday, Feb. 5, I was reminded of an old clichÇ: guys with expensive sports cars are trying to compensate for a lack somewhere, hrm . . . below the belt. The first article to catch my attention was the news brief about the plans to build the tallest building on earth at the ground zero WTC sight.

Baseball looks toward new season

After dropping two out of three games to Texas Tech University last weekend, the UNM baseball team prepares to kick off its home schedule Saturday at Lobo Field. The Lobos are coming off a disappointing year that saw them get off to a quick start but ultimately stumble and fall in 2002 with a 22-35 overall record.

COLUMN: Nuclear weapons overfunded

President Bush's remarks during the State of the Union Address, combined with his enthusiastic mispronunciation of the word nuclear, (it's "nuclear," George, not "noo-cyoo-ler!") made the threat of war with Iraq more imminent than ever. Using skewed and clichÇd rhetoric like "justice," "suffering" and "torture," Bush aimed to incite a spirit of patriotism in the American public, a spirit that seems to be predominantly absent.

Martial arts comedy star triumphs in new sequel

Even after the severe beating administered to Jackie Chan for his role in "The Tuxedo," the scrappy master is back and ready to take on the entire English army. It's always good to see a classic Hollywood convention shattered. Case in point: sequels are supposed to suck.

Poet swings by old stomping grounds

by Marissa Juarez Daily Lobo As many of us as college students know, there is nothing better than a visit home now and then and for author and poet Simon Ortiz, his trip to Albuquerque on Thursday will be just that -- a return home. Born in Albuquerque in the early '40s, Ortiz grew up in the Acoma Pueblo community just west of the city.

LETTER: Censoring one way of denying freedom

Editor, While reading the letter by Autumn Slayton the other day, I couldn't help but wonder how it is that Americans could possess such little insight and knowledge of the Constitution and American society. The answer is something that could likely be part of a doctoral thesis.

Dare you to say "vagina"

Say "vagina." Now say it 128 times. That's how many times actresses Gretchen Lee Krich, Joyce Lee and Maureen McCormick, of "Brady Bunch" fame, said it in the performance of "The Vagina Monologues" at The Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe Tuesday night.

Photographer captures ocean timelessly

by Elizabeth Romero Daily Lobo Photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto uses inordinately long exposures, a 19th century camera and 8" x 10" film to make images that are as much about time as about the sea. In an age of speed and digital technology, Sugimoto is actually timeless.
