N.M. roads unsafe for pedestrians

by Stuart Overbey Daily Lobo New Mexico pedestrians walk some of the meanest streets in the nation, according to "Mean Streets 2002," a report from The Surface Transportation Policy Project. According to the report, for the years 2000-01, a total of 120 pedestrians died in traffic accidents statewide, which translates to 3.,by Stuart Overbey Daily Lobo

Professor helps write book on AIDS prevention

Staff Report A UNM professor is playing a key role in improving the communication strategies that can be used to help control the spread of HIV/AIDS in developing nations. Everett Rogers, a Regents' Professor in the Communication and Journalism Department, has co-written a book, Combatting AIDS: Communication Strategies in Action, that details the importance of using communication strategies to influence government policy and gender relations in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Editor, The torching of the Youth in Transition drop-in center on Thanksgiving evening requires some sobering self-examination. I'm familiar with YIT. I've seldom seen an agency accomplish so much with so few resources. YIT serves homeless young people who have fallen through the cracks of mainstream systems of care.

Berthold announces plans to retire after more than 30 years

Staff Report Popular UNM history professor Richard Berthold announced his plans to retire in a statement Monday. Berthold stated "constant harassment by persons in authority at the University" as the reason for his retirement. Berthold said in a statement that he would like to continue teaching but that his retirement will take effect at the end of this semester.

Lobo freshmen light up game

by Michael Beniash Daily Lobo On Monday night, the stellar and passionate play by two freshman guards aided the UNM men's basketball recuperation from the untimely loss of senior captain Senque "Q" Carey -- that is, for the time being. Red shirt freshman guard Mark Walters and walk-on freshman guard Jeff Hart displayed their young talent and toughness in an edge-of-the-seat thriller.

Lobo women stomp on Aggies

by Rob Jenkins and Audra Meiklejohn Daily Lobo The University of New Mexico women's basketball team earned its fourth win of the season against intrastate rivals, the New Mexico State University Aggies Tuesday night at The Pit. The victory marks the 13th straight victory for UNM over the Aggies and the Lobos' fourth home victory of the season as they outscored NMSU 86-75 in front of a season high crowd of 8,920 fans.

Lobos recover from point deficit to conquer Huskies

The Lobos found themselves in a familiar position on Monday night at The Pit -- down by one point with less than 30 seconds left in the game. "What's running through my mind is, 'why are we in this situation,'" sophomore forward Jamaal Williams said. This time, however, UNM was able to come through with a victory thanks to senior guard Ruben Douglas' left handed lay in with five seconds left.

in memory of...

Students were subjected to some HIV/AIDS shock therapy Tuesday during World AIDS Day to help them realize just how prevalent the disease has become in society. The event, which was recognized internationally on Sunday, was held between the Duck Pond and Zimmerman Library and, according to event organizers, was to show the UNM community how close to home the epidemic is.

As a great singer/songwriter, Lou Barlow should need no introduction. Unfortunately, he does, because great singer/songwriters are often unknown singer/songwriters. Vindication Vegas Style

The UNM football team accepted an invitation Monday to play in the SEGA Sports Las Vegas Bowl on Christmas day. "I think this vindicates a bunch of young people," head coach Rocky Long said yesterday afternoon. "We're the second place team and the second best team in the conference.
