UNM stumbles and falls to BYU

The UNM women's soccer team fell to Brigham Young University 3-2 on Thursday night. The Cougars scored with less than five minutes left in the game lifting them to a victory and a 3-0 start in the Mountain West Conference. Freshman midfielder Brooke Bowman took a pass from Jeni Viernes and beat Lobo goalkeeper Kristen Winters for the game-winning goal.

Pharmacy, hospital staff find suspected narcotics

News in Brief: Police were dispatched to the University Hospital and to the UNM Pharmacy Tuesday in response to two separate reports of staff finding suspected narcotics. In the first incident, UNM Hospital security staff turned over a crack pipe and a tablet stamped '512.

Bringing out the Dark Side

For people who are looking for a change from the norm of Friday night keg cups and crowded houses with loud, pre-recorded music, consider the "Dark Side of the X" variety Show. Modeled after famous variety shows such as the mainstream "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" and local phenomenon Tricklock Theatre Company's "Reptilian Lounge," "Dark Side of the X" allows people to go as wild as they want in the basement of Popejoy Hall.

LETTER: Iraq war not logical

Editor, President Bush has no idea what he is getting us into with his paranoiac fixation on Saddam Hussein. The entire Arab world isn't going to sit back and watch as we destroy Iraq. Visualize this scenario: Iraq launches missiles at Israel, who responds in kind.

Students learn self-defense, prevention

by Mara Magdich Daily Lobo UNM student groups sponsored a free three-hour class at Johnson Center Wednesday where an Albuquerque police officer and a self-defense instructor taught about 20 women how to defend themselves in case they are attacked.

Downthesun rehashes the new metal formula

"New-Metal" band offers nothing "new". Down the sun, and keep it down if you can. Downthesun, that's one word, all lower case, is Des Moines, Iowa's latest addition to the Slipknot wannabe club. With their not-so-original brand of thrash metal and vocal-shredding lyrics, the band members set out to prove just how fucked up growing up in the Midwest can make someone.

LETTER: Smoking polls inconsistent

Editor, According to an Albuquerque Journal poll published Tuesday, Oct. 15, 62 percent of Bernalillo County residents say they would support a law that would completely prohibit smoking inside public places. When asked about bans in more specific locations, 61 percent support such an ordinance in restaurants and eateries while only 30 percent say they would support a complete ban on smoking in bars or taverns.

Senate passes fall budget unanimously

The ASUNM Senate unanimously passed its fall budget Wednesday, approving $51,576 that will be distributed to 49 student groups. "We're really happy with the work we've done," Sen. Tim Serna said. "We came out about $2,300 lower than what we first projected.
